As Mandy navigates her complicated feelings for the three brothers, she must confront her troubled past and decide if she's ready for a future filled with love and unconventional family dynamics. Purple Mustang Overheated

Book 2: Loving Mandy

MANDY

โ€œNo,โ€ I begged. โ€œPlease, no.โ€
The stupid needle didnโ€™t listen.
My car temperature gauge started tormenting me when I was about halfway between my condo and the shop, bobbing up and down while I wondered how I would afford a major repair.
I pulled into Grave to Road Restorations and killed the hot engine. My purple Mustang was the only car Iโ€™d ever owned.
But it was twenty years old, and the maintenance was becoming too much for my tight budget.
The past couple of months had been rough. My best friend got married and moved out of the condo we sharedโ€”the condo she owned, and Iโ€™d been living in rent-free.
Vada kept the condo as an investment property, but her new husbands controlled all of her finances.
Her father actually owned the condo. But when he passed away, he left instructions for her assets to be managed by his business partners, the aforementioned husbands.
I understood why. Vada had no idea how to manage money.
They agreed to let me continue living there, but I had to pay the taxes, condo fees, and utilities. I was barely able to cover all that with my minimum wage income.
My savings were dwindling, and Iโ€™d started looking around for an apartment I could afford. But that was no easy feat in Miami.
I climbed out of my car with a heavy sigh, my achy vagina a reminder of my bad decision the night before.
Bad?
Nah.
Ill-advised?
Perhaps.
That orgasm was totally worth it though.
I pulled open the glass door, muttering under my breath when I was greeted with Christmas music.
The towering tree in the corner of the lobby twinkled with a thousand fucking lights, a cruel reminder that the holidays were right around the corner.
My first Christmas without Vada.
The high-pitched squeal of the receptionist pulled me from my pity party. โ€œGood afternoon,โ€ she squawked. โ€œWhat can I help you with today?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m here to see Vada.โ€
โ€œOh, of course,โ€ she said, reaching for her phone. โ€œWho shall I tell her is here?โ€
โ€œMandy.โ€
โ€œMandy?โ€
โ€œHale.โ€
โ€œMandy Hale is here to see you,โ€ she said into the receiver, gesturing for me to proceed down the long corridor of offices.
Vada inherited her dadโ€™s share of a classic car restoration business, and she married the three men who owned the place with her late father. So technically, she now owned the entire company.
I knocked on the partially open door.
โ€œCome in!โ€ Vada yelled.
โ€œHey,โ€ I said, flopping down in the chair facing her desk.
โ€œSomebody is having a bad day,โ€ she observed.
โ€œYou could say that,โ€ I confirmed with a heavy sigh.
โ€œYou can tell me all about it over lunch,โ€ she suggested, grabbing her purse from the desk drawer. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€
โ€œMy car overheated.โ€
โ€œShit.โ€
โ€œYeah. I donโ€™t suppose you got your license yet.โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ she said. โ€œI havenโ€™t had time to study. But itโ€™s on my to-do list.โ€
โ€œSure it is, babe.โ€ I chuckled.
โ€œHow are we supposed to go for lunch, then?โ€ she whined.
โ€œBigger problem for me is, how am I going to get my car fixed?โ€
โ€œYou want Jake to take a look at it?โ€
โ€œThat would be awesome.โ€
She pulled out her phone and fired off a text. โ€œHe said sure. Whereโ€™s the keys?โ€
โ€œRight here,โ€ I said, holding up my keychain.
A guy in coveralls appeared a couple of minutes later. โ€œJake sent me to get a set of keys for the purple Mustang outside.โ€
โ€œThat would be my piece of shit,โ€ I said, handing over the keys. โ€œIt started overheating on the way over here.โ€
โ€œWeโ€™ll pull her into the shop and take a look,โ€ he said.
โ€œNow, about lunch,โ€ Vada declared, sending another text.
One of her husbands appeared a minute later. Garrett was the nicest of the three. He was always smiling. And he was hot. A sexy silver fox.
All three of Vadaโ€™s husbands were nice-looking guys. They were old. Like, forty-three. But definitely sexy. Even Evan, the grump.
โ€œYou need a ride somewhere?โ€ Garrett asked.
Vada rose up from behind her desk and sashayed across the room.
โ€œWe have lunch reservations, but Mandyโ€™s car broke down,โ€ she explained, sticking out her lower lip while she ran her hands up his chest. โ€œWe have no way to get there.โ€
โ€œThis is exactly why you need your license, sweetheart.โ€
โ€œI know.โ€
โ€œDo you want me to give you a ride?โ€
โ€œYou have a meeting at twelve-thirty.โ€
โ€œCan you drive a stick shift, Mandy?โ€
โ€œYes,โ€ I replied.
โ€œYou can take the Viper, then.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not driving that car,โ€ I gasped.
โ€œWhy not?โ€
โ€œBecause itโ€™s expensive.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s insured,โ€ he said with a shrug.
โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I sighed.
โ€œYes!โ€ Vada shrieked. โ€œLetโ€™s go!โ€
โ€œWhy do I have a bad feeling about this?โ€ I accepted the keys.
โ€œYouโ€™ll be just fine,โ€ he assured me. โ€œGo. Have lunch. Take your time.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re the best, Garrett,โ€ Vada said, leaning up to give him a peck on the lips before she grabbed my arm and dragged me down the hallway.
We ran into Evan on the way to the lobby.
Literally.
Vada plowed right into him with a loud oomph.
โ€œSlow down, baby,โ€ he said. โ€œWhereโ€™s the fire?โ€
โ€œWeโ€™re just going to lunch,โ€ Vada explained.
โ€œHow are you, Mandy?โ€ he asked stiffly.
โ€œFine.โ€
Evan made no bones about the fact that he didnโ€™t like me. Before Vada fell in love with three old dudes, we were an item.
We were bisexual, and weโ€™d been engaging in a friends-with-benefits-type arrangement since we were fourteen. Evan was uncomfortable with it, and he felt threatened by me while they were courting Vada.
โ€œI wish you wouldnโ€™t ride around in that deathtrap of hers,โ€ he muttered after they exchanged a steamy kiss. โ€œI doubt it even has airbags.โ€
โ€œWeโ€™re taking the Viper,โ€ she informed him.
โ€œGarrettโ€™s Viper?โ€ he gasped. โ€œHas he completely lost his mind?โ€
โ€œProbably,โ€ she chuckled. โ€œSee ya!โ€
We burst outside, the midday heat blasting us in the face. The red sports car was parked in the employee lot.
I climbed behind the wheel and fired up the engine. My hands trembled on the steering wheel as I slowly exited the lot.
โ€œRelax,โ€ Vada laughed. โ€œItโ€™s just a car.โ€
I drove under the speed limit the entire way to the restaurant.
โ€œCโ€™mon, Grandma,โ€ Vada grumbled. โ€œI do have to go back to work. At this rate, itโ€™ll be dinnertime before we get there.โ€
I parked at the far end of the lot, away from all the other cars.
โ€œReally?โ€ Vada sighed.
โ€œZip it,โ€ I ordered before climbing out of the ridiculously low car.
โ€œWhy are you walking funny?โ€ she asked.
โ€œNo reason,โ€ I mumbled.
โ€œI know that walk,โ€ she laughed, poking me in the shoulder. โ€œSomebody got some cock.โ€
โ€œShh!โ€
โ€œSpill it!โ€
โ€œCan you at least wait until weโ€™re seated?โ€
โ€œI guess so.โ€
The hostess led us to a table on the waterfront patio. I chewed on my lower lip while I tried to decide which salad to get. That was about all I could afford.
โ€œLunch is on me,โ€ Vada said. โ€œStop fretting about the cost and get whatever you want.โ€
โ€œYou know I donโ€™t like handouts,โ€ I said quietly.
โ€œToo bad.โ€
โ€œHow much do you think itโ€™s gonna cost to fix my car?โ€
โ€œJake will fix it. You might have to pay for the parts, though.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m looking for something more affordable,โ€ I said. โ€œThe condo is too expensive.โ€
โ€œHave you tried to find a roommate?โ€
โ€œNo.โ€
โ€œWhy not?โ€
โ€œI prefer to live by myself.โ€
โ€œAre you ever gonna tell me about the guy you fucked last night?โ€
The waitress returned with our drinks and took our orders. I gazed out at the water while I sipped my iced tea.
โ€œI did something kinda stupid,โ€ I said.
โ€œUh-oh.โ€
โ€œThis guy came into the store to buy his daughter her first bra.โ€
โ€œNo!โ€ Vada yelled, drawing a dirty look from the table behind us.
โ€œCan I tell the story?โ€
โ€œSorry.โ€
โ€œSo, this super sexy dude comes in with his twelve-year-old daughter. Says she needs a bra, and he doesnโ€™t know anything about buying bras.โ€
โ€œSo he brings her to the most expensive lingerie store in Miami?โ€ she chuckled.
โ€œI know, right?โ€
โ€œHow did you end up fucking a bra-buying dad? And why the hell didnโ€™t her mother bring her?โ€
โ€œSheโ€™s dead.โ€
โ€œOh, thatโ€™s sad.โ€
โ€œYes. Fotune took her to the change room to do her fitting and left me alone with the sexy dad.โ€
โ€œDid he fuck you on the checkout counter?โ€ she gasped.
โ€œNo!โ€
โ€œBummer,โ€ she mumbled.
โ€œBut he flirted with me.โ€
โ€œHow old was this guy?โ€
โ€œForty-five.โ€
โ€œNice.โ€
โ€œAnyway, Fotune took forever finding the kid a bra. By the time they came out, heโ€™d invited me for a drink after work.โ€
โ€œDid you go?โ€
โ€œObviously! Hence the limp.โ€
โ€œOh, right,โ€ she laughed. โ€œHe was packing some serious meat?โ€
โ€œOh yeah.โ€ My raw pussy clenched as I recalled the feel of him stretching me open. Iโ€™d never been with a guy that big before. โ€œWe went to an upscale club and ended up fucking in the bathroom.โ€
โ€œEw,โ€ she whispered, wrinkling her nose.
โ€œNo. The place was clean. Really fancy. I think this guy is loaded.โ€
โ€œDo you like him?โ€
โ€œWhat does it matter?โ€
โ€œArenโ€™t you gonna see him again?โ€
โ€œI doubt it. It was a quickie in a bar bathroom. We didnโ€™t even exchange numbers or last names.โ€
โ€œWhy not?โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m worried about you, Mandy,โ€ she said, reaching across the table for my hand.
โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€
โ€œI wish you would reconsider and join us for Christmas.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s your first Christmas with your husbands,โ€ I said. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t feel comfortable. And Evan hates me.โ€
โ€œHe doesnโ€™t hate you, Mandy,โ€ she sighed. โ€œAnd if he gets to have his family there, why canโ€™t I have mine?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not really your family, Vada.โ€
โ€œI consider you family,โ€ she said. โ€œThis is my first Christmas without my dad. Youโ€™re the closest thing to family I have left.โ€
โ€œYou have three husbands.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™ve been part of every Christmas at my house since we were eight years old.โ€
I grew up in foster care. When I first started at Vadaโ€™s public school, she bullied me. But we ended up becoming best friends.
The Collinses welcomed me into their home and treated me like family. I had no idea where my mother was.
Child Protective Services removed me when I was four, and I hadnโ€™t seen or heard from her since.
โ€œI canโ€™t come to your house for Christmas, Vada,โ€ I said.
โ€œWhat will you do?โ€
โ€œProbably order Chinese and binge-watch something on Netflix.โ€
โ€œI have a proposition for you,โ€ she revealed, rubbing her palms together.
โ€œIโ€™m not going to change my mind about Christmas, babe,โ€ I said quietly.
โ€œThis has nothing to do with Christmas.โ€
โ€œWhat is it about then, Vada?โ€
โ€œThere are a few tickets left for the cruise. And I got you one!โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€
โ€œThe cruise weโ€™re going on. The guys said I could invite you.โ€
โ€œI canโ€™t go on a cruise, Vada.โ€
โ€œWhy not?โ€
โ€œUm, letโ€™s see,โ€ I said, pressing my finger against my chin. โ€œWhere to begin? Iโ€™m not part of your cult, nor do I want to be. I donโ€™t have any money. And I canโ€™t take a week off work.โ€
โ€œSixteen days,โ€ she corrected.
โ€œSixteen days?โ€
โ€œYeah. Theyโ€™ve been planning this for years. People come from all over the world. They wanna make it worth their while.โ€
โ€œI canโ€™t afford to take two weeks off work, Vada.โ€
โ€œYou have holidays. I know you havenโ€™t used them.โ€
โ€œI canโ€™t afford to go on a cruise.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s all paid for. Food, booze, everything.โ€
โ€œI highly doubt Evan agreed to this.โ€
โ€œIt was his idea.โ€
โ€œYeah, right.โ€
โ€œHe figures if he marries you off to three guys, he wonโ€™t have to worry about you trying to steal me away.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not marrying three men.โ€
โ€œI know that. But that doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t participate.โ€
โ€œParticipate in what?โ€
โ€œThe cruise isnโ€™t just a reunion of all the polyandrous families. There are lots of young men looking for a wife to share.
โ€œEveryone is tasked with bringing a single gal along. Itโ€™s kind of like a dating-game-type scenario.โ€
โ€œAre you insane?โ€
โ€œNo.โ€
โ€œThat sounds like a meat market, Vada.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not,โ€ she laughed.
โ€œSo, you donโ€™t really want me to come,โ€ I surmised. โ€œYou have an obligation to bring a single woman for the pool.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s not the only reason I want you to come, Mandy.โ€
โ€œEven if I was interested in your strange harem lifestyle, which Iโ€™m not, youโ€™re forgetting one important thing that all these men want.โ€
โ€œSex?โ€
โ€œThey want babies, Vada,โ€ I sighed. โ€œAre there any families without kids?โ€
โ€œI have no idea. Iโ€™m sure there are. Not everyone wants kids.โ€
โ€œBut most of them do, donโ€™t they?โ€
โ€œI guess.โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t qualify to be one of your dating game contestants.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re not coming to find a harem. Youโ€™re coming because you need to have some fun in your life.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not going on your cruise.โ€
The waitress arrived with our lunches. I inhaled my Cuban sandwich and sweet potato fries.
โ€œI guess you were hungry,โ€ Vada observed.
โ€œYeah. I didnโ€™t eat breakfast this morning.โ€
โ€œHave you lost weight?โ€
โ€œNo.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m worried about you, Mandy,โ€ she said. โ€œWill you at least let me buy you some groceries?โ€
โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€
โ€œMandy!โ€
โ€œJust drop it, Vada.โ€
***
I slid my key into the lock, wrestling to keep my umbrella over my head, my body already drenched from head to toe. Nothing beats an hour-long bus ride on a rainy morning.
โ€œWhat happened to you?โ€ my coworker gasped when I stepped inside the back entrance of the store.
โ€œI had to take the bus.โ€
โ€œThe bus?โ€
โ€œYep. My car is in the shop.โ€
โ€œHow horrible.โ€
โ€œYes, it was.โ€
โ€œI think your day is about to get worse,โ€ she whispered. โ€œFotune asked me to send you to her office as soon as you arrived.โ€
I swallowed past the lump forming in my throat, dread gnawing at my gut as I racked my brain to try and figure out what I was getting in shit for.
My feet felt like they had bricks strapped to them as I took the short walk to my bossโ€™s office. I tapped lightly on her door and waited.
โ€œCome in!โ€
โ€œYou wanted to see me, Fotune?โ€
โ€œYes,โ€ she clipped. โ€œSit.โ€
โ€œHave I done something wrong?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m afraid Iโ€™m going to have to let you go, Mandy.โ€
โ€œWhy?โ€ I gasped.
โ€œI watched the security tapes from your last shift.โ€
โ€œOkay,โ€ I said slowly.
โ€œI watch them every night. Your interactions with a male customer were extremely inappropriate.
โ€œI was in the fitting room with his young daughter for eighteen minutes. During that time, you flirted nonstop with that man, and he with you. It was appalling to watch.โ€
โ€œYou got all that from a grainy surveillance video?โ€
She turned her laptop around, a very un-grainy video playing on the screen. There was no sound. But the facial expressions and body language were enough to seal my fate.
