Layla Potter, Texas-raised country girl, is plagued by night terrors that seem to hint a past that she has put out of her mind is trying to be remembered. Lucas Foster, the incredibly handsome but cranky neighbor of her parents, has his own traumatic past to deal with. Layla is convinced they can help each other, but Lucas canโ€™t bear the thought of losing herโ€”just like heโ€™s lost everything heโ€™s ever loved. Can Layla help Lucas find a way to live, not just survive? And can Lucas help Layla recover her memory? Maybeโ€”if Lucas can keep her alive long enough to face her demons.

Knock, Knock

โ€œYou know better than to go on his property.โ€ Gretchen flipped her baseball cap around. โ€œIt literally reads No Trespassing and No Soliciting on signs all over this place!โ€
Layla looked around. โ€œItโ€™s a flyer. What harm can it do for me to hand the man a flyer?โ€
โ€œHeโ€™s probably got a million shotguns in there. You donโ€™t need to get shot today,โ€ Gretchen pointed out. โ€œAnd the signs are a good indication that he doesnโ€™t want to be bothered. Ever.โ€
Layla licked her lips. โ€œBut his mailbox is on his porch. Maybe Iโ€™ll just slip it in there.โ€
โ€œYou know damn well youโ€™re going to knock on that door.โ€ Gretchen smiled. โ€œGet a nice, good look at that Lucas โ€˜Hot As Hellโ€™ Foster!โ€
Layla shrugged. โ€œThe worst thing that can happen is he slams the door in my face.โ€
โ€œOr shoots youโ€ฆโ€ Gretchen pursed her lips together. โ€œOr takes you in his bedroom and ravishes the ever-loving daylights out of you!โ€
โ€œTake care of my dog!โ€ Layla mused, dramatically tossing her head back. โ€œAnd you can have all of my vinyls!โ€
โ€œAll of them?โ€
โ€œShushโ€ฆ Are you coming with me?โ€
โ€œHell no!โ€ Gretchenโ€™s black braids were frizzing in the humidity. โ€œThis is one Texas girl who is not dying today.โ€
โ€œIf anything happens, youโ€™re my bestie and I love you!โ€
โ€œYou know heโ€™s so damn fine though,โ€ Gretchen reminded her, as if trying to talk herself into walking up to his door for a look-see. โ€œLucas Foster might be an asshole, but holy shit balls. Iโ€™d like to have that man every which way possible!โ€
โ€œI am aware of what he looks like.โ€ Layla smiled. โ€œAnd for an older dude, heโ€™s got it, but thatโ€™s not why weโ€™re here.โ€
โ€œHeโ€™s not that much older,โ€ Gretchen scoffed. โ€œMaybe forty? A fifteen-year age difference ainโ€™t nothing, sis. Sounds like my parents.โ€
Layla was suddenly lost in a lustful haze of impure thoughts about Lucas Foster. She was already taken, but it didnโ€™t mean she couldnโ€™t fantasize.
โ€œYeah, heโ€™s thirty-nine or forty, but I donโ€™t remember.โ€ Layla shook her head. โ€œUgh, stop it! Youโ€™re trying to stall me. Iโ€™m going up there.โ€
She twirled her auburn hair into a huge knot and was struggling to get her finger out of it. โ€œWell shit.โ€
Gretchen laughed. โ€œHold on.โ€ She helped her friend untangle herself and motioned for her to go. โ€œItโ€™s been nice knowing ya, babe!โ€
โ€œSo dramatic,โ€ Layla mumbled as she made her way across the street and to the front gate of the large two-story house on the corner.
It was nice, with a well-manicured yard. The driveway was a bit of a walk, and she prayed that Lucas hadnโ€™t acquired some sort of lethal guard dog since posting the signs.
โ€œYou can do this. Itโ€™s just Lucas. You sort of know him. Your parents live right down the road. Heโ€™s just a dude. Heโ€™s a maniac. Heโ€™s crazy. What am I doing?โ€ She was talking to herself, struggling in the Texas heat.
Lucasโ€™s house was the last one they were going to hit for the day.
Layla and Gretchen were passing out flyers and talking to people who wanted to help the local farmers keep their businesses and farms from being shut down.
Surely, Lucas would want that. He wouldnโ€™t want all of this beautiful land to be desecrated.
โ€œNo guard dog.โ€ Layla breathed a sigh of relief, noticing Lucasโ€™s truck and his motorcycle parked in the driveway.
Even though she said she wasnโ€™t going to talk to him, what would be the harm? It was just a little old conversation between two human beings, right?
Ding dong! Knock, knock!
โ€œThis is fine. Everything is fine.โ€ Layla held the flyer tightly, staring at the mailbox standing right next to her, then looking around the patio. โ€œWhat lovely potted plants.โ€
โ€œThe fuck do you want?!โ€
โ€œAhhh!โ€ Layla let go of the flyers, watching them flutter to the ground as the front door came swinging open. She knelt down and began to pick them up frantically.
โ€œIโ€™mโ€”uhโ€”Iโ€™m Laylaโ€ฆ You know thatโ€ฆ And Iโ€™m passing out these flyers to help spread awareness about the local farming industry, and itโ€™s also got the time for a scheduled meeting of the city council to helpโ€”help the local farmersโ€ฆand toโ€ฆโ€
She gathered all of them, then stood up on wobbly legs and looked into the eyes of Lucas Foster, certified madman.
However, he was not hard on the eyes at all.
Tall, built like a bull, tattoos, a bit bronzed from being out in the sun, dirty blond hair, and light stubble dancing across his cheeks and chinโ€”and shirtless.
Of course she had to glance quickly at his bare chest, chiseled and sweaty. For half a second, Layla wished she was inside his blue jeans.
โ€œThatโ€™s fucking delightful, but are you illiterate?โ€ he asked, pointing to his signs.
โ€œN-noโ€ฆ,โ€ Layla stammered. She pushed the paper out to him, but he didnโ€™t budge. โ€œC-can I put this in your mailbox?โ€
Lucas sighed heavily. He wore no smile, and she couldnโ€™t read him at all. She was thankful her friend was waiting for her. At least the authorities would know where to look for her body.
Lucas stepped out onto the porch flush with her becauseโ€”of courseโ€”she was too frightened to move. He loomed over her, so she practically sprained her neck to look up at him.
โ€œIf youโ€™d wanted to put it in my mailbox, why did you knock on my door?โ€ he asked, his green eyes blazing into her dark blues.
Layla shrugged. โ€œWeโ€™ve been talking to everyoneโ€”โ€
โ€œAnnoying the fuck out of everyone, ya mean?โ€
Layla huffed. โ€œItโ€™s an important issue. Iโ€™d think you of all people wouldnโ€™t want a condominium right across the street from your lovely ranch.โ€
Why was she still on that porch and why were her lips moving?
Lucas grinned, a crooked little sinister grin, but he didnโ€™t move.
She could feel his heat against hers, practically taste the sweat coming off of him. Glancing behind him through the open door, she glimpsed some boxing gloves chucked onto the floor.
โ€œYou box?โ€ she asked him.
โ€œGo. Away.โ€ His smiled faded as he snatched the paper from her hand. โ€œNow.โ€
And with that, he slammed the door behind him.
Layla had no idea how she made it back down that driveway, but she was still losing her shit when she and Gretchen drove off.
โ€œWell?โ€
โ€œWell what? Iโ€™m having a heart attack,โ€ Layla heaved.
โ€œWhat does he look like? Smell like? Act like?โ€
โ€œHot, hot, hot, and very angry.โ€ Layla giggled, twirling her hair again. โ€œBut he did take the flyer.โ€
โ€œMission complete!โ€ Gretchen gave her a high five.
โ€œLetโ€™s get ice cream,โ€ Layla offered.
โ€œOh, need to cool down?โ€ Gretchen joked.
โ€œSomething like that.โ€
***
Lucas tossed the flyer into the garbage and settled down for a nice cold beer.
โ€œFucking hippies,โ€ he grumbled as he downed the booze. โ€œNice ass, though.โ€
He thought about Layla and how sheโ€™d had the balls to show up at his front door like thatโ€”not that it was the smartest thing to do, but it was ballsy.
She was a looker, but she was youngโ€”maybe twenty-four, twenty-five. Not too young, but not his age of forty.
He hadnโ€™t gotten laid in quite some time, and just the thought of her made his dick twitch. She was absolutely breathtaking and smelled so fresh, like new linens mixed with expensive floral potpourri.
He knew all about the people trying to take his land and the land of the local farmers around the area. It didnโ€™t take a young, college-educated, tree-hugging hippie to tell him the news.
Heโ€™d seen her plenty of times in his life, always happyโ€”smiling, wearing big dresses and skirts, running around music festivals where he was head of security, watching her paint flowers on the childrenโ€™s faces, protesting against wars heโ€™d fought in.
The fucking audacity.
Of course, some people didnโ€™t like him. They knew his past and he had his close friends, but not many in the area.
He liked it like that. People didnโ€™t need to know his business, and they didnโ€™t need to keep feeling sorry for him. He couldnโ€™t stand that.
***
โ€œIt was a shame when his wife died,โ€ Gretchen was saying as they ate their ice cream.
โ€œThey never had kids, right?โ€ Layla asked her.
โ€œNot that I know of. I wouldnโ€™t mind having his babies though.โ€ Gretchen giggled. โ€œI wish Iโ€™d gone up to his house now.โ€
โ€œI could almost taste him, girl.โ€ Layla shook her head, her blue eyes widening. โ€œHeโ€™s scary.โ€
โ€œYou gotta like those bad boys.โ€ Gretchen nudged her.
โ€œListen, I know Iโ€™m not overly adventurous in my dating life, but Paul and I are doing well.โ€
Gretchen crinkled her nose. She wasnโ€™t a big fan of Paul Gates, but he was Laylaโ€™s boyfriend, and Layla was her best friend.
โ€œHeโ€™s a nice guy and we have a lot in common,โ€ Layla told her again.
โ€œLike what? Youโ€™re both in love with the planet? Heโ€™s soโ€”soโ€ฆPaulโ€ฆโ€
Layla frowned. She wasnโ€™t the best judge of bad character, but Gretchen was. He wasnโ€™t what Layla truly wanted, but itโ€™s what she had, so she was contentโ€”which was exactly what Gretchen couldnโ€™t stand.
โ€œYouโ€™re too comfortable.โ€
โ€œShould I be uncomfortable?โ€ Layla laughed.
โ€œYou are a free spirit, but you donโ€™t push the limits. Letโ€™s go out this weekend.โ€
โ€œWhere?โ€ She looked at her friendโ€™s little devilish grin. โ€œOh, no, I am not going clubbing with you.โ€
โ€œOh, come on!โ€ Gretchen begged. โ€œJust this one weekend. Please?โ€
Layla pursed her lips together. She had so much classwork to catch up on, and Paul wanted to hang out.
โ€œHow many weekends are you going to give to him? Come out with the girls!โ€ Gretchen pouted.
โ€œFine, fineโ€ฆโ€ Layla waved her hand. โ€œYou know I love you, but the club thing just isnโ€™t my scene.โ€
Gretchen rolled her eyes. โ€œI know. Sing-a-longs and campfires and protesting injustices are all the rage with youโ€”not to mention your incredibly large collection of rocks.โ€
โ€œTheyโ€™re my healing crystals, thank you very much.โ€
โ€œRocks, thatโ€™s what I said,โ€ Gretchen teased. โ€œSo itโ€™s settled! Weโ€™re going to paint the town, sista.โ€
