Chapter 1
âLook at me, my luna...â
The sound of his voice sent a chill down Autumnâs spine.
She stared down at the carpet of wet leaves on the forest floor below her. As much as she tried, she couldnât bring herself to look up at him.
âI said, look at me.â His voice cut through the silent night air like a knife, and Autumn felt a jolt run through her spine.
She jerked her head upwards as if pulled by an invisible force.
His expression was disdainful, and it broke her heart all over again. He was looking at her as if she was something he loathed with every ounce of his being.
âYou are nothing to me. Nobody.â
The words were like a thousand tiny knives to her stomach, tearing her apart. She fell to her knees, feeling the dampness of the ground seep through her tattered dress.
Heâs about to do it. The voice in her head was full of pain, but it was certain. Still, Autumn didnât want to believe it. She couldnât imagine this would ever happenâŚ
Long before all of this, when Autumn was a child, she had read stories about she-wolves who got rejected by their mates. Back then, she shuddered when reading descriptions of the all-encompassing, earth-shattering pain they felt.
She knew, any second, she would feel that pain, too. She would soon know what it was like to have a mate decide she was unwanted, to cast her aside.
âD-do itâŚâ Her voice rang out in the night, hardly louder than the night itself. As she spoke, she bowed her head again, unable to keep looking into his hateful eyes.
She didnât want to suffer. She didnât want him to drag it out any longer than it had to be.
The crunch of leaves told her he was approaching. She felt his presence as he stepped in front of her. Even now, at what she was sure was the end, the mate bond ignited between them like a tunnel of light, keeping her warm in a sea of cold.
But it was weaker now. It was as if the bond was flickering, its power straining as it sensed it was approaching its end. It seemed to cry out, begging him to reconsider.
He stopped right in front of her, and Autumn found herself gazing at the mud caked on his black boots.
His fingers reached under her chin and turned her face to look up at him. Autumn gazed up into his beautiful face and let out a sob. He was so beautiful.
âWhat did you say?â he asked indifferently.
âR-reject me,â she muttered, even as her wolf howled at her to stay quiet. âPlease, just allow me to go. You donât love me. I know that. So donât keep me trapped here anymore.â
A growl seemed to ripple up from the very base of his chest, and his fingers tightened on her chin.
Finally, he seemed to get control of his wolf, and he let out a long sigh.
When he spoke, his voice was softer than sheâd expected. But the words still sent an icy cold running through her veins.
âWhat makes you think Iâll ever let you leave me?â

âAutumn!â
The sound of her name jolted Autumn awake, her eyes snapping open to stare at the moldy ceiling. It was that dream again. The same horrible nightmare.
It took her a moment to remember what had awoken her.
It wasnât until Luna Joella shouted again from downstairs that Autumn turned to look at the clock.
âCrap,â she muttered, scrambling out of bed in a frenzy. She darted around her room, gathering clean clothes and everything she needed for the day ahead.
âCrap, crap, crap, crap...â she mumbled to herself, pulling a T-shirt over her head before rushing out of the room and down the stairs.
Luna Joella raised an eyebrow as Autumn skidded into the kitchen. âNice of you to join us,â she drawled.
âIâm sorry, Luna. My alarm must haveââ
âI donât want excuses, Autumn. Finish the packâs breakfast, and then get on with your chores. We have a busy day today,â Joella interrupted, her voice dismissive as she turned and left the kitchen.
Autumn managed to cook breakfast just in time for the meal to begin. As pack members filed in, she handed them their plates and then set about cleaning up the kitchen.
As she worked, she thought back to her dream.
Every night, it was the same thing. She was mated to an alpha, and he was about to reject her. But he never actually got the words out. She always woke up before he could act.
For some reason, it didnât feel like a dream. More like⌠a premonition.
âWhat are you still doing in here?â Joella barked as she came back into the room, making Autumn flinch in surprise.
âI was just finishing up the dishes. Is there something you need?â Autumn asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Joella huffed, handing her a list. âHere are some additional tasks I need done today, on top of your usual chores, of course.â
Autumn scanned the list, her eyes widening in disbelief. âThere must be thirty things on here. Thereâs no way Iâll get this all done today.â
âWell then, you better get started, dear, because I expect it to be done,â Joella said with a smirk. âOh, and rein in that attitude. Itâll get you in trouble.â
Lowering her head in submission, Autumn bit back a retort. She knew that if she looked Joella in the eyes, the defiance and irritation in her face would be all too clear.
Sitting at the kitchen island, Autumn took a moment to strategize how she would tackle the seemingly endless list of chores. After a few minutes, she sighed and got to work, knowing she didnât have much of a choice.
It had been four years since Autumnâs parents had died, leaving her with their massive debts to the alpha and the pack. She had been twenty at the time, in the middle of her second year of college. The alpha had pulled her out of school, telling her she had to work off her parentsâ debts. And so, here she was, still cleaning toilets and cooking every meal in the pack house.
Autumn managed to complete most of Joellaâs list before she had to stop and prepare dinner. She walked into the kitchen looking disheveled, her hair falling out of its ponytail and her shirt stained with various substances. Leaning against the counter, she took a deep breath and allowed herself a moment to dream of the day she would leave this place and never have to do another personâs chores again.
She had just started on dinner when alarm bells began to ring. Confused, she watched as pack members rushed around in a panic. Following the chaos, she finally managed to grab hold of someone. âWhatâs going on?â she asked.
âAlpha Warner defied the treaty. He just attacked the Red Moon Pack, and now theyâre on their way to our borders,â the girl said, her voice trembling with fear before she ran off.
Autumn stood frozen, her mind racing. Breaking a treaty was bad enough, but breaking the treaty with Red Moon? That treaty had been made by the alpha king himself. Defying the king would mean severe punishment for the entire pack.
âWhat were you thinking, Warner?!â she heard Joellaâs voice from down the hall. Autumn quickly ducked behind a wall, not wanting to be seen. She had heard rumors about King Elijah, and if they were all going to die, she wanted to know why.
âJoella, not now! There are too many things in motion,â Alpha Warner replied in a hushed tone.
âWarner, you know what heâll do. Why would you break the treaty so openly? I thought we had a plan!â Joellaâs voice was laced with concern.
âRed Moon just...â Warner trailed off.
âJust what?â Joella snapped. âIs this some power play? Did you do this to try and take over their pack quickly? Because I thought we had a strategy!â
âTheir land is our land, Joella! They stole it from us and then convinced King Elijah to let them keep it!â Alpha Warner growled.
âIf you attacked them, then it means you thought you could win. So whatever youâre doing, do it fast. As soon as Elijah hears about this, itâs all of our heads,â Joella whispered urgently.
Anger bubbled up inside Autumn as she realized their alpha had risked everything for a few dozen acres of land. She huffed, preparing to return to the kitchen when a hand grabbed her arm. She spun around to find Joella glaring at her.
âLuna...â Autumn murmured, lowering her head.
âWere you spying on us, Autumn?â Joella hissed.
âNo, Luna. I was just finishing up the list you gave me,â Autumn replied quietly.
âHa! Not likely,â Joella scoffed, dragging Autumn up the stairs and down the hall to her small room. She shoved her inside and slammed the door shut. âWhat you heard will never leave your lips. Now, you will stay in here until this is all figured out,â she warned, locking the door behind her.
Frowning, Autumn decided to make the most of her unexpected free time. She took a long, hot shower to wash away the grime from her day of chores, then pulled on a large T-shirt and crawled into bed.
She tried to sleep, but the sounds of fighting in the distance kept her awake. The packâs mind-link was in chaos, filled with yells, commands, and cries for help. The pack was at war, and it was only a matter of time before the warriors returned, injured and exhausted from their battle at the border.
As she finally drifted off to sleep, Autumn couldnât help but wonder what would happen when the king found out. Would he come here? Would he punish the Pack?
If there was punishment, would she be included, or only the alpha?
Autumn shuddered, her mind temporarily drifting back to her dream again, and the mysterious alpha who was always on the verge of rejecting her.
Who was he? Was he real?
And if so, how long before she met him in real life?
