Axel: I just turned forty, stumbling headfirst into a midlife crisis the moment I entered the dreaded decade of middle age. Iโ€™m supposed to be making this cross-country journey alone to get my head straight. The last thing I want is a flighty chick riding shotgun.

Dallas: Iโ€™m twenty-one and am on the run from a life I didnโ€™t choose. The plan is simple: hitchhike my way to Florida, get a job, then never let a man close enough to control my life or heart. But as we reach our destination I realize Iโ€™m not ready to say goodbye to my ride yet.

Girl With Her Thumb

AXEL

I scrolled through my playlist, selecting Jason Aldeanโ€™s version of Amarillo Sky as I approached the Texas state line. Amarillo was still an hour away, but I felt like listening to the song now.
People donโ€™t believe me when I say I love country music. Apparently, oneโ€™s choice in music should match their physical appearance.
I look like a biker, therefore I should listen to heavy metal or classic rock and drive a Harley.
Fucking stupid.
I hate the majority of the people I meet. Thatโ€™s just how I am. My tolerance level for other humanโ€™s bullshit is pretty nonexistent.
Itโ€™d be a cold day in hell before I changed my life to conform to a stereotype.
I have no issues with who I see in the mirror. My head is shaved because Iโ€™m going bald. I keep a thick goatee and a long beard to make up for the hair thatโ€™s missing on my head.
What can I say? I like hair on my body. Iโ€™m a man. Men are supposed to be hairy.
You wonโ€™t catch me shaving my pits or my chest. Now, I do believe in manscaping down below. Thatโ€™s just good hygiene and common courtesy to my lady friends.
My tattoos donโ€™t have any deep, sentimental story behind them. Theyโ€™re just pictures of things I like. Plain and simple. Iโ€™m not a sentimental guy.
Streaks of orange and yellow painted the predawn sky, the darkness slowly lifting as the sun crept up over the flat Texas landscape.
Barren fucking landscape. There was literally nothing out there but open fields and wind turbines.
And a girl with her thumb stuck out.
What the fuck? Was she looking to get raped and murdered?
I slowed down, the headlights of my car illuminating the airhead with the death wish.
She had a pair of the sexiest legs Iโ€™d ever seen. It was encased in cowboy boots that disappeared beneath a denim skirt that was way too short.
Her blouse was tied in a knot at the bottom, revealing a flat belly. Her ample breasts spilled out the open buttons at the top. Long, golden hair blew around her heart-shaped face.
She stepped back, shaking her head as she waved me off. โ€œIโ€™ll wait for the next car!โ€ she yelled when I rolled down the passenger window.
โ€œThe next person who stops will probably be a serial killer.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll take my chances.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m harmless, sweetheart,โ€ I said. โ€œI canโ€™t leave you out here alone. There are too many psychos out there, just waiting to stumble upon a foolish young girl who is stupid enough to hitchhike.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure thatโ€™s exactly what a serial killer would say.โ€ She laughed. โ€œAnd itโ€™s not you thatโ€™s the problem. Your aura is clear. Itโ€™s your car thatโ€™s freaking me out.โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t have any dead bodies back there, if thatโ€™s what youโ€™re worried about.โ€
โ€œWhy are you driving a hearse?โ€
โ€œHop in, and Iโ€™ll tell you.โ€
She glanced down the empty highway, sighing heavily as she reached for the door handle.
My senses were momentarily overwhelmed with the smell of mint and soap mixed with a slight hint of flowery perfume or deodorant.
โ€œAxel Kramer,โ€ I said, extending my hand.
She accepted my handshake, meeting my gaze head on, her bright blue eyes snapping with moxie. โ€œDallas Austin.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re Dallas Austin from Texas?โ€
โ€œYep.โ€
โ€œOkay then.โ€ I chuckled. โ€œI guess itโ€™s probably smart not to tell a stranger your real name.โ€
โ€œThat is my real name.โ€
โ€œSure.โ€
She grabbed her backpack from the floor, rooting through it to produce a sparkly pink wallet covered in rhinestones.
โ€œHow old are you?โ€ I sighed, second guessing my decision to pick her up as I envisioned getting arrested for having a minor in my hearse.
โ€œTwenty-one,โ€ she announced, holding up her passport.
I snatched it from her fingers. โ€œYour name is actually Dallas Austin?โ€
โ€œYep,โ€ she muttered. โ€œIโ€™m the youngest of twelve kids. By the time I was born, I guess my folks were plum out of name ideas.โ€
โ€œDallas is a nice name,โ€ I said. โ€œBut when your last name is Austin, well, I think Iโ€™d probably pick something different.โ€
โ€œIt is what it is,โ€ she said with a shrug, popping a stick of gum in her mouth. โ€œYou want a piece?โ€
โ€œNo, thanks.โ€ I put the car in gear and headed down the interstate. โ€œWhere are you heading, sweetheart?โ€
โ€œFlorida.โ€
โ€œGonna have to be a bit more specific.โ€
โ€œMiami.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m going to Tampa, so I can take you that far.โ€
โ€œCool.โ€
โ€œWhatโ€™s in Miami?โ€
โ€œCruise ships.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re hitchhiking to Florida to go on a cruise?โ€
โ€œNo. Iโ€™m gonna work on one.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s cool.โ€
โ€œYup. Are you gonna tell me why youโ€™re driving a hearse to Tampa?โ€
โ€œI work for a funeral home. A very prominent Los Angeles resident passed away in Florida.
โ€œHe was afraid of flying, so his nutjob wife doesnโ€™t want his body shipped back by air. She wants him to have one last road trip across the country.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s fucked up.โ€
โ€œSome people have more money than brains.โ€
โ€œHowโ€™d you get roped into doing the trip?โ€
โ€œMy boss also has more money than brains. The dearly departed man was a close friend of my boss. He gave me the company credit card, and he told me to eat wherever I want and stay in a nice hotel every night.โ€
โ€œThat seems like a good deal.โ€
โ€œThe trip down is nice, for sure. But the trip back will be a bitch.โ€
โ€œWhy?โ€
โ€œItโ€™s thirty-six hours from Tampa back to LA. I canโ€™t exactly stop at a hotel for the night and leave a dead body in the car.โ€
โ€œWhy not?โ€
โ€œBecause there are rules you have to follow when transporting human remains.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m no geography expert, but wouldnโ€™t it be faster to cut across south Texas?โ€
โ€œI will, on the way back. But I wanted to take a different route down, take my time, and get lots of rest. Iโ€™m only driving six or seven hours a day.โ€
โ€œWhere are you staying tonight?โ€
โ€œLake Murray, Oklahoma.โ€
โ€œHow old are you, Axel?โ€
โ€œForty.โ€
โ€œYikes. That sucks.โ€
โ€œThey say forty is the new thirty.โ€
She laughed and shook her head. โ€œWhatever helps you sleep at night, old man.โ€
โ€œDo you want to walk to Florida?โ€ I said, giving her the stink eye.
โ€œSorry,โ€ she muttered, turning her head to stare out the window.
โ€œIs that the famous Cadillac Ranch?โ€ I asked when I noticed a bunch of cars standing upright out in the field.
โ€œYes.โ€ She sighed, rolling her eyes.
โ€œCool.โ€
โ€œThat place will be packed later. Always is. Every fucking day.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™ve got a potty mouth, Dallas Austin.โ€
โ€œYou got a problem with that, Axel Kramer?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not your dad. Why the fuck would I care?โ€
She leaned forward, pulling her ringing phone from the front pocket of her backpack, and said, โ€œHey.โ€
I stared straight ahead, trying not to listen to her conversation. We were on the outskirts of Amarillo, and the traffic was starting to pick up.
โ€œYeahโ€ฆ Probably,โ€ she continued her conversation. โ€œA dude in a hearse picked me up. Heโ€™s heading to Tampa.โ€
I continued driving without any expression.
โ€œNope. His aura is clear,โ€ she said.
I sensed her eyes on me. โ€œTake a picture, sweetheart. Itโ€™ll last longer,โ€ I said.
She giggled.
Fuck. Why did I pick up a child from the side of the road?
Because youโ€™re a nice guy, and you know what couldโ€™ve happened to her if you didnโ€™t rescue her. And sheโ€™s not a child. Far from it. Sheโ€™s twenty-one. One hundred percent legal pussy.
I returned my attention to the road, pushing all thoughts related to her pussy from my mind before my cock got any ideas.
She was way too young. Probably a virgin. And even if she wasnโ€™t, she definitely wouldnโ€™t be up for a romp in the sheets with a guy like me.
She continued with her conversation, smacking on her gum while she stared out the window. โ€œNo. Heโ€™s oldโ€ฆ Forty!โ€
She smiled and looked out the window. โ€œTrueโ€ฆ Definitely.โ€
I scratched my head and continued driving.
โ€œHeโ€™s got a long beard and tattoos.โ€
She talked about me like I wasnโ€™t even present there.
โ€œI know. I already thought about that,โ€ she said.
Her eyes seemed lost for a moment.
โ€œStop. You have such a dirty mind.โ€ She giggled. โ€œDo you think heโ€™s mad?โ€ A flicker of sadness washed over her face.
What was this girl up to?
โ€œGranddad will probably have a stroke.โ€ She chuckled. โ€œSheโ€™d probably be happy to finally be rid of himโ€ฆ
โ€œOh, heโ€™ll definitely be pissed. Maybe heโ€™ll have a stroke. Or a massive heart attack. Either way, the world would be a better place.โ€
I rubbed my beard and worked my brain hard to decipher the conversation. What was this girl running away from? Who was she talking to? And most importantly, why the fuck did I care?
