Chapter 1
CAROL
The coffee stain was small. Tiny. Practically invisible. Unfortunately, it was on the front of my cream pencil skirt.
I stared at it in horror while standing in the mirrored elevator of Wright Enterprises’ headquarters, dabbing the spot with a tissue like my life depended on it. “Great,” I muttered under my breath. “First real job interview and I already look like I spilled breakfast on myself.”
Fantastic.
Not that it mattered. People usually noticed my résumé before they noticed me anyway.
It had always been that way. In school, in college, in every internship that followed.
The smart one. The reliable one. The one professors trusted with numbers and strategies while other girls were the ones people noticed when they walked into a room.
I had learned early that intelligence could open doors. Even if it never quite made anyone look twice.
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime before I could do anything else about it. But it was too late.
Game over, Carol. I squared my shoulders anyway and stepped out onto the top floor, forcing my posture into something that hopefully resembled confidence instead of mild panic.
Glass walls framed the entire office. Sunlight flooded the space, reflecting off polished floors and sleek modern furniture. The place looked exactly like the headquarters of one of the fastest-growing foreign trade companies in the country.
Which meant one thing. Everyone here probably knew what they were doing. Unlike me. I took a slow breath, clutching the strap of my bag tighter.
You graduated at the top of two programs.You finished an MBA before turning twenty-five.You can handle one interview.
The reception desk sat in front of a large waiting area furnished with ivory armchairs and low marble tables. A short red-haired woman with oversized square glasses glanced up from her computer. “Miss Henderson?” she asked.
“Yes,” I said quickly, maybe a little too quickly.
She offered a polite smile and stood, holding a clipboard. “I’m Julia from HR,” she said. “We’ll start your interview now.”
I followed her through a glass door into a smaller office, trying not to look around like a tourist while my brain continued running in twelve different directions. The interview started simply enough. Questions about my degrees, my MBA research, and why I chose foreign trade.
“Your thesis on international cargo logistics,” Julia said, glancing at her notes. “That was focused on port optimization, correct?”
“Yes,” I said, grateful for a question I actually loved answering. “Specifically on how inefficiencies in customs clearance can cost companies millions annually. I proposed a restructuring model that—” I stopped myself.
Right. Interview. Not thesis defense.
Julia smiled faintly. “No, please continue,” she said.
So I did.
By the time I finished explaining my model for streamlining container documentation and tax routing, Julia was writing something quickly on her clipboard. “Interesting,” she murmured. Then she stood. “If you don’t mind waiting a moment.”
“Of course,” I said.
She stepped out of the room, leaving me alone with my suddenly loud heartbeat.
I leaned back in the chair and exhaled slowly. Okay. That went well. I think.
Through the glass wall, I could see part of the office floor. Employees moved between desks, phones ringing softly, keyboards clacking in a steady rhythm.
Then something caught my attention. Near the end of the corridor, a man stood inside a large glass office—maybe a conference room—speaking sharply into his phone.
Tall. Dark suit. Dark hair. And something magnetic I couldn’t explain.
His posture was rigid, shoulders squared like someone used to being obeyed. There was something about the way he held himself that radiated authority. The kind of presence that made people listen when he spoke.
Even from here I could tell he wasn’t happy. He looked…irritated.
He was pacing slowly as he spoke, one hand pressed against his hip, the other holding the phone to his ear. I couldn’t hear the conversation, but the tension in his jaw made it obvious enough.
Then he turned his head. His gaze lifted suddenly. Straight toward the glass wall. Toward me. And our eyes met.
Blue. Clear, striking blue.
I forgot how to breathe. I should look away. I needed to look away. But I couldn’t.
His voice stopped mid-sentence. Completely.
I saw the exact moment it happened. The conversation on the other end of the call clearly didn’t exist for him anymore.
His eyes were still locked on mine. A shiver ran slowly down my spine. And suddenly it felt like the entire corridor had gone still.
Focus, Carol. Come on. It’s your job interview.
With a small effort that felt much harder than it should have been, I broke the gaze and looked away, pretending to be fascinated by a framed company award hanging on the wall. My heart was beating faster than it had any right to.
When I dared to glance back again, he was already walking down the corridor, jaw tight, still holding the phone. And somehow I had the strange feeling that moment hadn’t been as accidental as it should have been.
I shook the thought away. I just need this job. It’s a big company. A real opportunity for someone freshly graduated.
Before I could think about it any longer, the door opened again. Julia stepped back inside. “Miss Henderson,” she said. “Mr. Wright would like to speak with you.”
For a moment my brain simply…stopped. “Mr. Wright? Like the Mr. Wright? The CEO?” I asked before I could stop myself.
She smiled politely. “Yes,” she said.
A chill ran down my spine. This interview had suddenly become much more serious.
I followed her through the corridor, my heels clicking softly against the polished floor. From this side of the building, the office seemed even larger, sunlight pouring through the glass walls that overlooked the city.
We stopped in front of a massive glass door, and Julia knocked once before pushing it open. “Mr. Wright, Miss Henderson is here,” Julia said.
And that was the moment I met Damon Wright. The man whose glance had taken my breath away just minutes ago.
Oh God.
He looked up from a stack of documents as we entered. Then he stood.
And the first thought that crossed my mind was dangerously unprofessional. Oh.He’s…very tall.
Broad shoulders stretched the fabric of his dark suit. His dark hair was slightly longer than most executives would dare wear, and his jaw carried the faint shadow of stubble. He looked even more handsome up close. But it was his eyes that caught me again.
Sky blue, sharp, and observant. Like he missed absolutely nothing.
His gaze moved slowly over me before returning to my face. Just long enough to make my pulse jump. “Miss Henderson,” he said, stepping forward and extending his hand.
His voice was calm. Controlled. But there was curiosity there too. “It’s good to finally meet you,” he said.
Finally?
I placed my hand in his, hoping mine wasn’t visibly shaking. “The pleasure is mine, Mr. Wright.”
His handshake was firm. Warm. He gave what might almost be considered a smile—small, restrained, professional.
But his eyes lingered on me for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before he gestured toward the armchair in front of his desk. “Please. Sit.”
I did, trying very hard not to notice that his office was almost the size of my entire apartment. Damon Wright didn’t sit immediately.
Instead, he rested one hip lightly against the edge of his desk, studying me with a thoughtful expression. “You wrote the thesis on port logistics optimization,” he said.
“Yes,” I said.
“It was impressive,” he said.
My eyebrows lifted slightly. “You read it?” I asked.
The corner of his mouth moved almost imperceptibly. “I try to keep up with the best new research in the industry,” he said. Something about the way he said it made it feel less like a compliment…and more like a challenge.
Damon pushed himself away from the desk and finally took the chair behind it. He opened a thin folder. My résumé. “I’m curious about something,” he said calmly.
Of course you are.
“You argue in your thesis that most ports lose nearly thirty percent of their operational efficiency because companies treat logistics as isolated systems instead of integrated networks.”
“Yes,” I said.
“You suggest restructuring the cargo allocation model entirely.”
I nodded slowly, my fingers tightening together in my lap.
“That’s…ambitious,” he said. There was no mockery in his voice. But there was skepticism.
“I believe it’s realistic,” I replied.
He lifted one eyebrow slightly. “Oh?” His gaze sharpened. “Most people with your level of experience would call it impossible.”
I leaned forward a little before I could stop myself. “That’s because most companies try to optimize individual terminals instead of the entire supply chain.”
His expression didn’t change, but I could see the attention in his eyes sharpen.
“They solve the wrong problem,” I continued. “If you redistribute cargo flow before the ships even arrive, you remove the bottleneck before it forms.”
Silence settled between us. For a moment he simply watched me. Then he leaned back slowly in his chair. “And how would you convince the shipping companies to cooperate with that model?” he asked.
His tone was casual. But his eyes weren’t. He was testing me. Good.
“I wouldn’t convince them,” I said.
That got his attention. “Oh?” he asked.
“I’d make it financially impossible not to.”
The smallest hint of amusement touched his mouth. “Explain,” he said.
“If the port controls the docking priority system,” I said, “then ships that cooperate with the redistribution model receive faster turnaround times.” I held his gaze. “Ships that don’t…wait longer.”
Another quiet pause filled the room. Then Damon chuckled softly. A low, surprised sound. “That’s ruthless.”
I shrugged. “Efficient.”
For the first time, his smile became genuine. And it changed his entire face. “Well,” he said, closing the folder slowly, “Miss Henderson.”
My pulse jumped.
“I think it’s safe to say you’re not here for a junior analyst position,” he said.
I blinked. “I’m not?”
“No,” he said and stood. And when Damon Wright stood, the entire room seemed to shift with him. “I prefer hiring people who can challenge the way my company thinks,” he said.
He walked around the desk and stopped in front of me again. “And you clearly can,” he said.
My heart started beating faster. “Are you saying—” I started.
“I’m offering you the position,” he simply said.
For a second I simply stared at him. Just like that? “You haven’t even finished the interview,” I said.
A faint smile returned. “Oh, I finished it.” His blue eyes held mine. “About five minutes ago.”
I couldn’t help it. I laughed softly, the tension finally breaking. “Then I suppose I should say yes.”
“I was hoping you would,” he said. He extended his hand again.
I stood and shook it, still a little stunned.
“Welcome to Wright Enterprises, Miss Henderson.”
As we released the handshake, the office door opened. A man stepped inside without knocking. Blond, brown eyes. Expensive suit. His smile appeared the moment he saw Damon. “Sorry to interrupt,” he said casually. “Board call in ten minutes.”
Then his gaze shifted to me. And something about the way he looked at me made my stomach tighten.
His eyes moved slowly over my face. Like he was trying to memorize something. Too slowly. Too carefully. “Well,” he said lightly, “and who is this?”
Damon’s posture changed beside me. Subtle. But unmistakable. “This is Carol Henderson,” he said.
His tone had turned cooler. “She just joined the company,” he said.
The man smiled again. But this time it didn’t reach his eyes. “Michael Norris,” he said, extending his hand.
I hesitated for half a second before shaking it. His cool grip made my instincts stir with quiet unease. A strange chill I couldn’t quite explain crept down my spine.
Something about him felt…wrong.
And my instincts had never whispered that word so clearly before.
