Lexie and Josh have been best friends since elementary school. They tell each other everything, but Lexie’s been keeping a big secret from Josh – he’s the guy she has a crush on. He has a girlfriend, but what if he starts having feelings for his best friend too? The story, with all its juicy secrets, misunderstandings, and deceptions, unfolds through texts and group chats.
Who’s the Unlucky Guy?
LEXIE’S BED, IN HER ROOM: 7:15 PM FRIDAY, MAY 08, 2020
LEXIE
Lexie
Hey Josh.
TWO HOURS LATER
Josh
Hey! I went to pick Sabrina up from dance practice, sorry for the late reply.
Lexie
That’s okay :)
Josh
You sure? Are you okay? I didn’t see you after school.
Lexie
I left early. Had a stomachache🤒
Josh
Aww, must be hard being a girl :(
Lexie
U have no idea...
Lexie
Sean asked me out today.
Josh
😄Really? That’s awesome news! I mean you like him, don’t you?
Lexie
Well....
Josh
Well?
Lexie
Not anymore. I kind of like someone else right now.
Josh
😱
Lexie
Lol
Josh
😏You didn’t tell me this. Who’s the unlucky guy?
FIVE MINUTES LATER
Josh
Lexie?
Lexie
Yeah.
Josh
Who is he?
Lexie
You.
A MINUTE LATER
Josh
Lol. What?
Lexie
Sorry my sister wrote that text!
Josh
Which one of the texts?
Lexie
“You.”
Josh
Lol how did your six-year-old sister manage to snatch your phone?
Lexie
I went to pee. So sorry about that XD
Josh
Alright...
Lexie
Anyway it’s a boy from school.
Josh
What’s his name?
Lexie
You don’t know him.
Josh
I probably do, does he play football?
Lexie
Nope. It doesn’t matter whether u know him or not Josh. It won’t work out.
Josh
Why??
Lexie
Because you have a—
Lexie quickly deletes the text before sending.
Lexie
Because he has a girlfriend.
Josh
😕Ouch.
Lexie
Yup. Sucks to be me.
Josh
No, it doesn’t suck.
Lexie
Huh?
Josh
You’re pretty and smart, there isn’t anything that sucks about you. You’ll find the perfect guy one day😘
Lexie stares at the emoji for over a minute, her face a bright shade of red.
Lexie
You’re just saying that because we are friends😒
Josh
Bestfriends* and no, I am not. Look in the mirror and you will see what I mean.
Lexie
Thank you. :)
FIFTY MINUTES LATER
Lexie
Are you there?
Josh
Yeah. Sorry...I was caught up😅
Lexie
With?
Josh
You don’t want to know.
Lexie
I want to.
Josh
Your virgin ears won’t be able to handle it😏
Lexie
😕??
Josh
I was having sex with Sabrina. Don’t ask for details, I don’t kiss and tell😉
Lexie feels a sharp pain in her chest as she reads the words.
Lexie
Ew. I think I just pictured a traumatic sight.
Josh
Lol! And what exactly did you picture?😏
She laughs to herself as she types a response.
Lexie
A veryyyyy small weenie. 🥕
Josh
Haha. If you saw it for yourself, you would change that perspective, love.
Lexie
🙄
Josh
...do you want to?
Lexie
To what?
Josh
See it.
Lexie
See what?
Josh
What do you think? Lol.
Lexie
Be straightforward Josh.
Josh
🍆
Lexie almost gets a heart attack when she sees the symbol, knowing exactly what he’s hinting at.
Lexie
God, no Josh!🙈
Josh
Lol I was kidding, Lex.
Lexie
Not funny.
Josh
Well I’m laughing hard😂I can imagine how red your face is right now😋
Lexie
😒
Josh
😝
Lexie
You’re an idiot
Josh
But u love me anyway ;-)
She smiles to herself and mutters, “More than you know.”
Lexie
I don’t.
Josh
Hate is close to love. I got to take Sabrina home, so I’ll text you tomorrow.
Lexie
Okay.
Josh
Goodnight, Love u.
Lexie reads his last two words a few times. She knows Josh doesn’t love her as more than a friend but she likes to pretend he does in the delusional world of her own little mind.
Lexie
I love you too. Best friend.
She watches as his status changes to offline. She presses the home button on her screen and lays her head against her pillow.
She closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep, thinking about her best friend who she may never be able to call hers.
