Willow has spent her life being underestimated, and she is very tired of it. Small, loud, and unable to shift, she hardly fits the image of power, especially after moving into the territory of the strongest Lycan pack in England. Life under a cold, commanding Alpha is anything but easy, particularly when he has no patience for chaos, weakness, or sharp tongues. Willow happens to be all three, and she refuses to shrink for anyone. Their clash of wills sparks tension neither of them expects, and the air between them grows charged as danger creeps closer. As shadows gather and loyalties are tested, something powerful stirs where defiance meets desire. Can chaos become strength?
Chapter 1: The Girl Who Couldn’t Shift
WILLOW-ROSE
The sky over England was gray. Heavy and low, like it hadn’t decided whether to rain or just smother everything with silence. A perfect match for the icy, ancient stone fortress looming in the distance.
“Cheerful place,” I muttered, shifting my weight as the car slowed.
“Don’t start, sweetheart.” My mom smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Let’s at least see the inside of the house before you start roasting the lycan king’s territory.”
My dad chuckled from the front seat. “To be fair, she’s not wrong. This place is…intense.”
Intense was one word for it. Gothic, broody, terrifying—all worked too.
As our driver—a stiff, silent warrior named Maddox—pulled through the tall iron gates, the full weight of it hit me: this was real. This wasn’t a vacation or a temporary visit. We were moving into his territory.
The territory of Leo Damaris. The lycan alpha king.
I didn’t know much about him—only what I’d heard in stories and whispers. That he was powerful. Unforgiving. That people bowed when he walked into a room. That no one dared meet his eyes for long.
And that he’d killed his own uncle at sixteen to take the throne.
No big deal.
“Willow,” my mom said gently, reaching over to squeeze my hand. “We’re going to be okay.”
I gave her a small smile, hiding the way my stomach had knotted itself into pretzel-level stress. “I know. I’m good.”
I wasn’t. But I was good at pretending I was.
The car turned into a smaller road branching off from the main fortress. Neat rows of stone houses sat tucked beneath towering evergreens. Ivy curled up walls and chimneys. A large raven stared at us from a fence post like it had personal beef.
“This is where the council members stay,” Dad said, turning slightly. “They’ve given us a home right next to High Warden Caelan Idris.”
“He was close to the former alpha,” Mom added. “Apparently, he requested we stay near him.”
The car stopped.
The house was beautiful in a slightly spooky, medieval-cottage way. Ivy-covered stone. Dark green shutters. Smoke curling from the chimney.
Before I could reach for the door, my dad was already out, circling the car to open it for Mom like always. She stepped out with a warm laugh, her long braid swinging down her back as she leaned up to kiss him on the cheek.
“Still charming, Doctor Vale,” she teased.
“Still breathtaking, Mrs. Vale,” he murmured.
They were disgustingly in love. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I stepped out into the cold air, tugging my jacket tighter. My boots crunched against the gravel as I looked around. A few other houses dotted the street, each one grand and a little eerie, like the setting of a fairy tale right before the monster shows up.
From somewhere deeper in the woods behind the council homes, a low, distant howl echoed.
I paused.
Something about it wasn’t just animal. It was…controlled. Like it was meant to remind everyone who ruled this place.
“Was that—” I started.
“Yes,” my father said softly. “That would be the alpha.”
My heart gave a traitorous thud. I swallowed it down.
“Well,” I said as breezily as I could manage, “he seems warm and fuzzy.”
***
Inside, the house was surprisingly cozy—stone walls, exposed wooden beams, and a fireplace already crackling in the main sitting room. Someone had been in earlier to prepare it, but it still had that slightly musty, centuries-old scent of old wood and secrets.
“I’m taking the biggest room,” I announced as I stepped onto the creaky staircase.
“You’re taking the attic if you keep that attitude,” my dad called back.
I grinned and made my way up. The second floor had three bedrooms and a long hallway with windows that looked out over the thick forest behind the house. The rooms were all beautiful in that old-world, creepy-witch-cottage kind of way—canopied beds, clawfoot tubs, creaking floorboards.
The last room at the end of the hall was smaller but had the best view—tall windows looking out toward the trees and a small writing desk tucked into the corner.
“This one,” I whispered to myself.
It wasn’t the biggest, but it felt…right. Like it belonged to someone who didn’t mind being a little out of place. Like me.
I opened the wardrobe—ancient, of course, and smelling faintly of cedar—and started hanging a few clothes, just to feel like I lived here and not in some ancient horror film set.
The familiar scent of my sweater—lavender from Mom’s drawer sachets—stirred a sudden ache in my chest. Back in New York, my room had been barely big enough for a twin bed and a bookshelf. Quiet. Isolated. I never invited anyone over, not that anyone asked. The pack had been polite, sure, but never warm.
No one wanted to be best friends with the girl who couldn’t shift.
I’d gotten good at pretending I didn’t care. Smiling through it. Laughing too loudly. Keeping conversations light and breezy so no one would notice the heavy stuff underneath. It worked. Mostly.
A knock came at the front door downstairs.
“I’ll get it,” I called before anyone else could move, bounding down the stairs two at a time.
When I opened the door, two girls stood on the stone porch—identical in the way only twins can be, but entirely different in energy.
The one on the left had her long braids tied up in a sleek, coiled crown. She wore dark jeans, a high-collared jacket, and watched me with sharp, intelligent eyes.
The other had her braids loose, cascading down her back, and wore a long burgundy sweater over a flowing skirt. She was already smiling like we were old friends.
“You must be Willow-Rose,” said the smiling one.
“I’m Reya,” she continued before I could answer, stepping forward and looping her arm through mine like we’d known each other forever. “And this is my twin, Meena. We live next door. You’re cuter than I thought.”
“Reya,” Meena said calmly. “You literally saw her five seconds ago.”
“Well, I thought she’d be adorable. And now I’m correct.”
I blinked. “Hi?”
Reya gave me a wink. “Come on. We’re giving you the welcome tour.”
Before I could process what was happening, I was being gently dragged out the door. I shot a helpless look back at the house. My mom peeked around the corner and gave me a thumbs-up.
“Good luck,” she mouthed.
We walked past their house—similar in style to ours but with more vibrant touches, potted plants and wind chimes and lanterns with flickering witch light—and toward a small path that led deeper into the grounds.
“This place is a lot,” I said, glancing around at the towering trees and looming shadows. “Feels like Hogwarts but with more snarling.”
“Oh, honey,” Reya said, “wait until the alpha stares at you like you’re an insect.”
“He’s not that bad,” Meena muttered. “Just…intense.”
“Intense like lava is warm.”
“You’ve met him?” I asked casually, like I wasn’t dying inside.
“Once,” Reya said. “He asked if I was lost. I said no. I was definitely lost.”
I laughed. Loudly. Embarrassingly.
They both turned to me.
“I like you already,” Reya said, nudging me. “You laugh like you mean it.”
“Thanks. Most people say it’s loud.”
“It is,” Meena replied with a small smile. “It’s also honest.”
***
We looped around a garden and ended up at the edge of a massive training field—a wide-open space where warriors were sparring shirtless (Reya definitely noticed), and a few others were patrolling with lethal grace.
One man in particular, tall and broad with cropped blond hair, noticed us and narrowed his eyes. His gaze settled on me.
“Jason Hobbs,” Meena said under her breath. “The beta. Avoid him unless you like being glared at.”
“Noted,” I muttered.
Back home, people avoided eye contact for different reasons—awkwardness, pity. Here, it was suspicion.
But as we walked back toward the house, I felt something shift in the air. A tension I couldn’t quite place—like the wind had changed direction or someone was watching from somewhere unseen.
I looked up toward the looming stone fortress at the top of the hill.
Still no sign of the alpha.
But I could feel him. Like a storm waiting just behind the clouds.
And something inside me—deep and buried—felt like it was listening.
Later that evening, just as my mom lit a few candles and I was halfway into a pair of soft socks and a deep scroll through my sketchbook, a knock came at the front door.
My dad answered.
“Caelan,” he said warmly.
I peeked around the hallway to see a tall man standing just beyond the threshold—dark skin, long silver-threaded locs pulled back in a thick leather tie, wearing a dark wool coat over what looked like some kind of battle-worn tunic. He looked like the kind of man who could end someone with one hand…but would rather give you his coat if you were cold.
“Evening,” the man said, nodding to me and my mom with quiet grace. “I hope I’m not disturbing.”
“Not at all,” my mom said, stepping forward and offering her hand. “Mara Vale.”
He bowed his head respectfully. “Caelan Idris. It’s a pleasure.”
“Come in, please,” Dad said.
“I won’t stay long,” Caelan said, though he stepped inside anyway, his gaze sweeping briefly over the fireplace, the unpacked boxes, and the coat rack already slumping under the weight of our too-many jackets. “I only came to ask if you three would join me and my daughters for dinner. Reya will never forgive me if I let you eat plain pasta alone on your first night.”
“We’d love to,” my mother said immediately.
I nodded with a smile. “I think Reya’s already planning our next five weekends.”
“She usually is,” Caelan said with the faintest ghost of a smile. “She’s much like her mother.”
The room went quiet.
I caught the way my father’s expression softened—the quiet kind of grief that recognizes its own reflection.
“I’ve heard your work is…remarkable,” Caelan said to him after a moment. “Even among lycans, that’s rare.”
Dad looked down, humble as always. “I do what I can.”
“I only wish you’d been here years ago.”
My mom placed a hand gently over my father’s.
Caelan nodded once, then turned to me. “And you, Willow-Rose. I heard you’ve claimed the best room in the house already.”
“Obviously,” I said brightly. “I’m a menace about natural light.”
He actually laughed—not much, but it was there. “You’re going to be very popular here.”
“That’s a bold claim,” I muttered under my breath.
“I make them often. Sometimes they’re even true.”
***
Dinner at the Idris house was a warm, chaotic blend of old wood, dancing candlelight, rich food, and loud laughter. Reya kept passing me dishes faster than I could process them. Meena asked sharp questions about New York like she was cataloging me. And Caelan…Caelan watched everything.
Not in a creepy way. More like he saw the little things no one else ever noticed.
“Do you draw?” he asked at one point, his voice low.
I blinked. “Yeah. How did you—”
“You were looking at the curve of your spoon like you were memorizing it.”
My cheeks flushed. “That’s not weird at all.”
He smiled slightly. “The best people usually are.”
Reya burst in, mid-bite. “Dad used to carve. Back when he had time and two working thumbs.”
“You carved?” I asked, genuinely surprised.
“For a time,” Caelan said. “Until duty asked for other things.”
There was a weight behind his words. A history he didn’t elaborate on. But I noticed how his gaze lingered on my dad every so often—quiet admiration, and something else. Regret, maybe.
Later, after dessert and Reya’s dramatic retelling of how she once tried to dye Meena’s braids purple (spoiler: it did not go well), Caelan stood from the table.
“Tomorrow, I’ll show you the grounds,” he told my dad. “Introduce you to the healers’ den and the central archives. And I’m sure Meena or Reya will be dragging Willow into the training yard by then.”
“Oh, I don’t train,” I said casually, stabbing my fork into a slice of roasted carrot.
Silence.
Reya froze mid-chew. Meena blinked. Caelan just looked at me—not in judgment, but like he was waiting for the real reason.
I felt the weight of it settle on the table like a second, invisible course. My mom shifted beside me, ready to step in. But I shook my head gently.
Might as well get it over with.
“I’ve never shifted,” I said, eyes on my plate. “Not once. It just…never happened.”
Another pause.
I braced myself for it—the awkward silence, the sideways glance, the forced smile. Back home, even the kindest people didn’t know what to do with that information. It made them uncomfortable. Made me uncomfortable. Like I was a walking question mark.
But here…
“That explains the tension in your shoulders,” Caelan said, like he was commenting on the weather.
I blinked. “What?”
“You move like someone who’s constantly bracing. Like you’ve spent years preparing to defend yourself…just in case.”
I stared at him.
Reya leaned across the table and reached for my hand. “So? You’ll shift when you’re ready. Or when you’re not. Either way, we’ve got your back.”
Meena nodded. “We don’t measure strength by teeth here.”
My throat tightened unexpectedly.
“I used to think I was broken,” I admitted quietly.
“Broken?” Caelan’s voice was calm, but firm. “Or waiting for the right moment?”
I didn’t answer. Couldn’t, really. My chest was tight, and my eyes were suddenly too hot. But I smiled. Just a little.
Because for the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel like a problem waiting to be fixed.
I felt…seen.
Reya gave my hand a gentle squeeze. “Just a heads-up, though, Willow—some of the warriors around here have noses for…well, everything. Strength, doubt, fear. Not all of them mean harm, but they respect what they understand.”
Meena nodded, her gaze steady. “They don’t always know what to do with quiet strength. But don’t let that get to you. You don’t have to prove anything to them—or to anyone.”
“Except maybe us,” Reya said brightly. “We demand full loyalty and an oath of sisterhood by breakfast.”
I laughed—a real, sudden burst that startled even me.
