The seedlings of anger had Eden rising from her chair. She faced Gideon squarely. “Wait just a minute, buster. You don’t know me or what I was thinking. In the first place, I was not smiling about you. I was smiling because—” Ooh. Nope, not goin’ there. “Listen, frivolous is one thing I am not. Besides...‘people my age’? C’mon, I’m thirty-six!” Her voice rang loudly in the still-quiet foyer. Sherry Rhodes’s head jerked up, and Eden quickly recanted. “I will be thirty-six. In a few years.” She smiled brightly at Sherry. Lowering her voice, she looked at Gideon and promised, “I was not being frivolous just now.” Pointing discreetly in Sherry’s direction, she mouthed, “Huge gossip.” Which, she realized, still made her look frivolous, because why should she care if Sherry told everyone she was thirty-six when it was the truth? Except that Brandon Buchanan was only thirty-one, and Eden already had a few insecurities...well, one big one...about her ability to attract the man. Her most recent birthday didn’t help matters.
