Book 3: Behind Enemy Lines
I glance around, feeling a sense of belonging with the pack that chose me. Weâre not your typical pack. Weâre outlaws, rogues as others label us.
Our leader is Renard Weston. Heâs not my destined mate, but soon heâll be my official one.
Heâs made a promise to me. After he avenges his brotherâs death, heâll mark me as his mate.
âIâm not comfortable with this.â Onyx, my wolf, voices her concern.
âWe need to give him a chance. He saved our lives.â I try to convince her.
âBut heâs not the one the Moon Goddess chose for us. We should be with our true mate.â She argues.
I canât help but scoff.
âDo you really think heâll want us? Whoever he is, once he discovers what we are. Do you believe heâll want a rogue for a mate?â
âYou canât be sure. He might surprise us when we find him.â
I close my eyes.
âOnyx, please. I need you to support this. We might never find him. Are you going to deny me happiness because of a man weâve never met?â
Onyx sighs. âItâs not fair of you to play that card. You know Iâd do anything for you.â
Onyx is a unique wolf. Her fur is pure white. Some cultures believe a white wolf is a good omen, bringing luck to those near it.
But thatâs not true. Our past is proof enough.
When I was fifteen, hunters wiped out my pack. I survived because my mother helped me escape.
She smeared my clothes with the blood of dead werewolves to mask my scent.
She gave her last breath to save me.
A month later, Renard found me on the brink of starvation. Iâve stuck by his side ever since.
Now, at twenty-two, Iâm ready to be his mate.
He just needs me to do one thing first. After that, weâll be together forever.
We havenât shared a kiss yet. He says when the time is right, heâll let me know with our first kiss.
There are unmated males in the pack, but none dare touch me. They know the consequences of crossing Caesar.
Caesar is Renardâs wolf. As black as the night, he would never harm me. He doesnât want Onyx to despise him.
I jump as two large hands land on my shoulders.
âStella, what are you doing?â Renardâs voice sounds behind me, making me smile.
I turn to face him. âJoining the hunt, with you guys.â
He tucks a stray lock of my hair behind my ear. âWhat did I tell you?â
My smile fades. âNot to join in.â
He lifts my chin to meet his gaze. âAnd why is that?â
I clear my throat. âBecause Onyx will be easy for the prey to spot.â
âAnd?â He presses.
âWe donât want to risk someone seeing her. She could put the pack in danger.â
âGood girl.â Renard plants a kiss on my forehead. âI promise, soon youâll be able to let her out more often.â
Renard only allows me to transform into my wolf when sheâs on the verge of distress.
If a wolf is confined for too long, it can go mad, and thereâs no coming back from that.
âAnd you wonder why Iâm skeptical about him,â Onyx retorts.
Before I turned eighteen, Onyx never had an issue with Renard. But ever since we were old enough to find our mate, she started seeing him differently.
As sheâs said, sheâd do anything for me. So I know she wonât stop me when I mate with Renard, even if he wasnât our chosen one.
I look at him with pleading eyes. âWhy canât you stay with me, instead of going on the hunt?â
He smiles at my question.
âIf I could, I would. Stay hidden until I come back for you. You remember what happened last time you didnât listen to me.â
I shake my head. âDonât worry, I wonât disobey you.â
I watch with envy as the others transform into their wolves, ready for the hunt. I retreat back into the cave to wait for Renardâs return.
âNow that heâs gone, we can go for a run.â Onyx tries to persuade me.
âNo! You remember what happened last time.â I protest. âRenard didnât speak to me for two weeks. That hurt a lot. I donât want to risk that again.â
Onyx turns her back on me, lying down. Sheâs upset with me.
I settle on the floor to catch some sleep.
Iâm running. No, itâs not me running, itâs Onyx. Sheâs running through a forest.
Sheâs free and happy. She glances to her side as she continues to run.
A handsome brown-black wolf is running beside her. Onyx feels pure joy seeing him, and so do I.
I open my eyes, waking from the dream. Now I feel guilty. How can I dream of a wolf Iâve never seen before?
I want Renard and Caesar to be ours.
Iâm relieved that Onyx canât see my dreams. It would give her another reason to reject them as our mate.
I shouldnât keep this from her, but I canât help it. Renard saved my life. Heâs always been there for me. I wonât betray him.
âStella, weâre back. Itâs time for you to eat.â
Renard takes my hand, leading me to the food theyâve just hunted.
I adore rabbits. Itâs a rabbit. We all sit down to eat, and as usual, the meal is consumed in silence.
When we finish, everyone leaves the table except for Renard, Eric, and me. Eric is Renardâs right-hand man.
âStella,â Renard begins, his voice serious. âYou remember I mentioned Iâd need something from you.â
I nod, meeting his gaze.
âI need your help to get justice for my brotherâs death. I need you and Onyx.â
I reach out and take his hand. âYou know Iâd do anything for you.â
âI need you to infiltrate a pack and seduce their Alpha. Heâs mated, but not to his true mate. Their bond wonât be as strong as it would be between an Alpha and a Luna.â
I let go of his hand, stepping back in shock. âYou want me to seduce him? But you said youâd be my first in everything.â
âI knew this would happen,â Eric mutters under his breath.
âLeave us, Eric. I can handle this,â Renard commands.
Eric nods and leaves, leaving me alone with the man Iâm supposed to mate with.
âHow can you ask this of me?â I ask, my voice trembling.
âStella, you promised youâd do anything for me. Remember, I saved your life. If you refuse, I wonât mate with you.â
I gasp, taken aback. âHow can you expect me to do this? Iâm a rogue. Heâd never go for someone like me. You said it yourself, heâs already mated.â
Renard growls, or maybe itâs Caesar. âAre you questioning me?â
He takes a deep breath, trying to control his anger.
âTrust me, Stella. Once the Alpha sees Onyx, he wonât be able to refuse you access to his pack. After that, leave the details to me.â
âBut why seduce him? You said youâd be my first.â
Renard grips my arms, not too gently.
âOnce Iâve avenged my brotherâs death, youâll be mine.â
He lets go of my arms and cups my face. âPlease, do this for me.â
âOkay.â
Even though Iâm a bit scared of him, I canât say no. I owe him too much.
âI donât like this,â Onyx says.
I donât either, but I donât have a choice. Especially if it means getting what Iâve always wanted.
Which is him.
