The Half Blood

Her

NALA

“Nalaaaa… Nalaaaa…” Her voice echoed in my ears.
It was like a siren’s song, luring me in with its sweet melody.
I tried to pry my eyes open, but they felt as heavy as lead. With one final push, I managed to lift my eyelids.
I was sprawled out on a grassy patch, shrouded in darkness. I sat up, scanning my surroundings. Where was I?
Before me lay a small lake, encircled by towering trees. The moon, a silver crescent, hung in the cloudless sky.
Who was calling me?
“Nalaaa… Over here… Come, sweetheart…” I spun around. She was standing at the forest’s edge, her face devoid of emotion. A chill ran down my spine.
Her long, white hair framed her face, and her eyes—black as night—were fixed on me. The more I stared at her, the more I felt a dark energy radiating from her.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“Nala, my dear Nala, I’ve been waiting for you,” she replied, her voice as smooth as honey.
“Waiting for me… why?”
“You’ll find out soon enough, my Nala.”
“‘My Nala?’” I echoed, skepticism lacing my voice. She spoke as if she’d known me forever.~
“Nala…,” she called out again. “Why did you do it?”
“What are you talking about?” I furrowed my brows.~
“The necklace, Nala. You shouldn’t have taken it.” I was at a loss for words. How did she know about the necklace? Only Maeve and I were privy to that information.
“Why does it matter to you?” I retorted, my voice defiant.
“Oh, but it does, Nala.”
She paused before continuing, “You know, no one can outrun their fate. Your dreams will catch up to you, sooner rather than later, my Nala.”
She said my name as if it belonged to her.
Then she was gone.
I heard a noise to my left. As I moved closer, I realized it was the sound of singing and a tambourine.
Emerging from the forest’s shadows, I found myself back in that dream.
There they were, the same people, singing and dancing around the fire. But something felt different this time. I moved cautiously among them.
I felt like a hawk, stalking its prey. For the first time, this recurring dream filled me with fear.
I studied the faces around me, then my gaze landed on one person.
“Is this your dream, Nala?”
“Who are you?”
“Show me, Nala... Show me the man you’ve been dreaming of,” the woman from the lake said, ignoring my question.
The fire’s glow illuminated her. She was clad in a black evening gown, its sheer layers adding an air of elegance.
Her dress revealed her pale arms, so white that her blue veins were visible.
“I’ve never dreamed of any man.”
I tried to sound confident. She smirked, but her eyes remained cold. Something about her put me on edge.
“Are you sure, Nala?”
She glanced to her right, and when I followed her gaze, I saw him—the stranger. He seemed oblivious to the chaos around him. She moved closer to him, examining him.
She turned back to me, a smile playing on her lips.
“Now do you know who I’m talking about?” Her fingers traced his cheek. “He’s quite handsome, isn’t he?”
She didn’t seem bothered by my confusion. She was patient, as if she had all the time in the world for me to admit the truth.
“I don’t know who he is.” I was being honest.
“You will... See you soon, my Nala.” And just like that, she disappeared. The stranger was gone too. I was left standing there, staring into the fire.

The warmth from the flames was escalating; my hands were slick with sweat. I glanced down to see tiny burns forming on my skin.

A searing pain jolted me; it felt as if my hands were on fire from within. “Help...someone, please!” I cried out. But no one seemed to hear me. I continued to call for help. “Help ME!”

“Nala, Nalaaa! Wake up, Nala! It’s just a nightmare! Wake up! Now!” Nealie’s voice echoed in my mind.

I snapped my eyes open and sat up abruptly in bed. My breath was coming in short gasps, and I tried to steady it.

“Are you okay?” Nealie asked, her voice laced with concern.

“I’m okay. Just a terrible nightmare.”

“What happened in it?”

“I dreamt about someone who knew me and said she’d come back for me. I don’t know, Nealie. I felt my hands burning and then my entire body…”

I attempted to explain, but the words got stuck in my throat.

“Don’t worry about it. It was just a dream. Try to get some more sleep.”

I didn’t respond to her because I had a feeling it wasn’t just a dream.

I was almost certain that this woman had manipulated it. But how could she have done that? The only person I knew who could do that was my sister.

If my suspicions were right, it meant that this woman was undoubtedly a powerful witch.

“Let’s go for a run.”

“Now? It’s still dark outside.”

“I don’t want to go back to sleep. I just need to get out of here. Don’t worry. Dawn will break in less than an hour,” Nealie finally agreed.

I slipped into black leggings, a long white shirt, and black sneakers. I walked until I reached the edge of a small forest about two miles from the hotel. I closed my eyes and let Nealie take control.

I felt my human bones shattering. I bit back a scream. No matter how many times I transformed, the process was always painful. It was impossible to get used to the agony of breaking bones.

Once I was in my wolf form, Nealie stretched, shook herself off, and began to run.

The dense forest was filled with ferns and wildflowers. The scent of spring was soothing, and with my wolf in control, I felt liberated and wild.

After a few minutes of running, I noticed the first rays of the sun trying to pierce through the towering trees. The rustling of branches caught my attention. I paused for a few seconds to see what it was.

A brown rabbit hopped into view. We stalked it silently, careful not to startle it. In a swift attack, I pounced on it, pinning it to the ground with my front paws and biting its neck.

After my meal, I lay down amidst the plants and flowers that grew abundantly in the field.

The beauty of the nature around me, the chirping of the birds, and the scent of the morning dew brought a sense of peace.

I decided to head back later to the spot where I’d left my clothes, change back, and return to the hotel for a shower.

When I finished dressing in the clothes I had left under a tree at the entrance of the woods, I noticed a pair of eyes watching me.

I turned to my right, and a werewolf with a light-orange coat and white spots held my gaze for a few more seconds before disappearing into the forest.

For a moment, I was on edge, but I managed to relax a bit when I saw the werewolf move in a different direction. Still, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being watched.
