Artemis' Gift Book 3

Across the Border

WADE

I laid all my traps and prayed it would work this time. I couldn’t go into their territory because they’d be able to sense me, but I was safe if I kept outside the invisible border.

There, I thought, satisfied. Now we wait.

The night was pleasant, and it reminded me of home. I couldn’t wait to catch that little idiot so I could drag him in front of Sirius. He wouldn’t like meeting my brother for sure, that Alpha Devon.

He’d only been alpha for a year and was already making bad decisions. What did the young ones learn nowadays?

I was strolling along the border when I picked up a nice scent. It was…alluring, and it was making my wolf restless. What can it be?

I followed the trail, slowly, silently, because I was technically close to Devon’s border. It could be dangerous if his patrol saw me.

I stopped behind two bushes when I saw a small, skinny, tawny she-wolf. She seemed to hesitate about crossing the border. If she did, she would become a rogue. What was going on?

I looked closer, and our eyes met, orange on light-amber, almost yellow.

“Mate,” my wolf howled in my head.
I was rooted to the spot for a second. Really? That skinny wolf is my mate? She looked too beautiful to be mine. It was undeniable, though. My wolf could never be wrong.

A silver-coated she-wolf joined my mate, and she was snarling at her.

“Who does she think she is?” my wolf growled in my mind. “The bitch!”

I couldn’t let them know that I was here yet. If she so much as made a move toward my mate, she was dead.

A dark-brown male joined this time, and there was no doubt in my mind that he was the alpha. Hello there, Devon…

I thought I’d finally get the chance to get to him. Tonight was my lucky night, it seemed.

The silver she-wolf tried to jump my mate, but she crossed the border. She was now a rogue, and that seemed to scare her so much that she stopped moving.

The silver female wasn’t done, though. I saw her brace herself to jump, so I did before she could hurt what was mine.

I tackled my mate to the ground and growled toward the she-wolf. She was so small compared to me, and she seemed dominant, but not enough to play that shit with me.

Werewolves. They should know their place sometimes.

The male seemed stunned to see me, and I had to get away before he suspected anything.

I grabbed my mate by the scruff of her neck. She shot me a scared look, so I took off, carrying her like a kitten deeper into the forest toward Harold’s pack.

When I was sure they wouldn’t be able to hear us, I laid my mate down, and she shot to her feet, growling.

I chuckled. She looked adorable, my fierce little puppy. I estimated that she wasn’t older than nineteen. I’d need to see her first, though. I couldn’t wait for that.

I shifted first because I wouldn’t be able to talk to her mind to mind until I marked her. It was a bummer, but I was glad to have that information, thanks to Casey.

“Come on, Puppy,” I said. “I won’t hurt you. I won’t bite unless you want me to.”

She stopped growling, but she still looked terrified. Was it because she was a rogue now?

I would never let Harold’s wolves hurt her. She was mine, and they would die before they could land a claw on her.

“Come on. We won’t be able to talk until you do,” I said softly.

She hesitated, but finally, she shifted. She was beautiful. My heart started to beat faster as I saw her for the first time.

She had rich coffee eyes with long chocolate-brown hair. She was skinny, just like her wolf, and I could see several cuts and bruises on her skin.

It made me frown. Who dared do that to my mate?

My wolf was growling in my mind, but I tried to not let it show. I didn’t want her to feel threatened.

She was looking back at me, and I could see lust fighting fear in her eyes.

Why fear? I could never have hurt her. That would have killed me.

“You’re gorgeous, Puppy,” I purred as I got closer to her.

“Do it now,” she said, and I could see that her body was tensed and ready to bolt. “Do it now so I can just…leave.”

“Do what?” I asked, arching a brow. “You want me to mark you now? I’m not against it, Puppy, but I would like to know your name first.”

She looked back at me in total disbelief.

What? I was confused now. If she didn’t talk to me, I would never understand.

“Mark me?” she asked. “Don’t you want to reject me? I’m nothing. I’m not strong. I can’t bring anything into this…relationship.”

What? Where’s that coming from? I was shocked to hear that she wanted me to reject her. What did she mean by that?

“Slow down, Puppy,” I chuckled. “I don’t understand a word you’re saying. Since when do you need to bring anything into our relationship? You’re my mate. That’s all that matters to me.”

She looked at me as if I’d come from another planet. Seriously, I had no idea what she wanted to bring to me. She was my true mate, meaning that she would bring me eternal love.

Since when was that not enough?

“Really?” She frowned. “You don’t care that I’m…barely a dominant? You seem like an alpha of some sort, so I figured you’d want your mate to be strong.”

“Oh, I’m not an alpha, Puppy.” I smirked.

“I’m a lycan. You could be an omega, and it wouldn’t change the fact that you’re my mate, and that’s all that matters to me. Lycans can only mark their true mates, whatever they are.”

“Lycan?!” She jolted.

“Yes, and I’m Alpha Cassandra’s gamma. She’ll be pleased to accept you into her pack, I’m sure.” I smiled at her.

“But… Why would a gamma lycan want me?” she asked, panicked.

“Calm down,” I said soothingly as I took a step closer. “Can’t you feel it?”

I pulled her into my arms, and I sighed in contentment. This felt the best. I could feel the tingles of our bond course through my body, and I got really hard.

She smelled so good too… It was hard to resist.

She yipped when she felt my hard shaft poke at her belly, but I wasn’t shy, so I didn’t care. Like all lycans, I was at ease with my body.

Werewolves seemed to have more of a problem with it, I’d judged by Casey’s reactions. She hated it when Fabian would barge all naked into their room.

I loved to watch Desmond beat the crap out of Famine, though. I missed them.

“You really want me as your mate?” she asked, unsure.

“Of course.” I smiled softly at her. “If you keep asking that, I’ll believe you want me to reject you.”

She averted her eyes, and she seemed really uneasy all of a sudden.

What happened? Did that have anything to do with the cuts and bruises on her magnificent body?

I took her chin between my index finger and my thumb and made her look at me. I could see that she was still a bit scared, so I started rubbing her back for comfort.

I didn’t want her to be scared of me. I would do anything to protect that girl.

“Talk to me,” I said gently.

She shook her head and seemed to make up her mind as she looked at me.

“I don’t know if I want you to reject me or not, but… It wouldn’t be the first time.”

It wouldn’t be the first time what? That she’d been rejected? I was…her second chance?

Who could be dumb enough to reject such a sweet girl? Their loss, my gain, but now I understood why the Moon Goddess had wanted me to be patient.

I was sure it wouldn’t be easy to win the heart of my adorable mate. Good thing I was immortal and had all the time in the world.
