Unexpected Joy

Chapter 4

“Hannah, get a grip!” she muttered to herself. “It’s not like you’ll ever see this guy again.”

The buzzer sounded again, and the two servers went in, removing the trays. They unveiled each dish and began serving.

The group was ecstatic, and the room was filled with the sounds of satisfied munching.

Seeing the happy faces and the amount of food being devoured, Hannah pulled Chris aside for a quick drink in the alcove.

They waited until people started pushing their plates away, looking content and full.

They began clearing the plates and chatting with the group again.

“Hannah, did you ever listen to our music?” a man named Chad asked.

“Oh, I absolutely loved your songs! ‘Walking Away’ was my go-to track whenever I felt like stirring up some trouble,” she replied.

The group burst into laughter at her comment. Even Chris snorted as they continued to clear the dishes.

“Are you coming to the concert tomorrow, Hannah?” Joey asked.

She shook her head sadly. “No, my best friends and I tried to get tickets, but they sold out too quickly.”

“That’s not right!” the handsome man said. He pulled out his phone and started texting furiously. “How many best friends do you have, Hannah?”

She stuttered and stopped clearing the plates. “What do you mean?”

He gave her a teasing smirk. “How many people wanted to go to the concert?”

“Well, there were three of us, but—” she began.

“Perfect! And it’s done. You have three tickets waiting for you at the Will Call window at the events center. Plus backstage passes so you can hang out with these goofballs afterward,” he said.

The group cheered, and she blushed again. “Thank you… I really appreciate this…”

He smiled at her and winked again. She was over the moon inside but tried hard not to show it while she was working.

They cleared all the dishes and poured coffee as the group enjoyed dessert. Thirty minutes later, Joey asked for the bill, and Hannah placed it in the leather folder and handed it to him.

He didn’t even glance at the bill, just slid a black card inside and handed it back to her. She processed the card and brought it back to him to sign.

As he handed it back to her, he said, “Hannah, thank you so much for everything tonight. You and Chris were the best servers we’ve had on this tour.

“And this is our last stop, so you guys take the prize! Thank you. There’s a little something extra for both of you.”

Hannah smiled. “You’re welcome. It was truly our pleasure.”

“See you tomorrow night. I need to call my wife and kids before bedtime. Bye, guys! See you in the morning!” Joey called out.

She watched the men leave the room, but her eyes kept drifting back to one man in particular. He had a commanding presence, but he wasn’t overbearing.

She could tell he loved his job and was a people person, enjoying the interactions with the group around him. Hannah also couldn’t help but notice how well his dress pants fit him.

They hugged his legs just right, hinting at the muscular build underneath. And his ass was just perfect!

She was so engrossed in admiring his body that she didn’t notice he had stopped and was looking at her with a smile on his face.

She blushed furiously when she realized, quickly turning to pick up a plate and napkin to keep her hands busy, cursing herself.

She picked up a few more things and moved to the side cart to put them away when she felt his presence behind her. She said a silent prayer not to embarrass herself again and turned around.

“Can I help you with something?” she asked, a little shyly.

He smirked at her. “Well, that’s a conversation for another time, but I was wondering if I could get your number, just to make sure you get the tickets tomorrow night.”

“Oh, um, sure. 303-555-0169,” she replied, a little disappointed that he just wanted it for the tickets.

He typed it into his phone, hit a few buttons, then slid it into his pocket and looked at her.

“Great. I sent you a text so now you have my number. If you have any problems with the tickets or getting backstage for the party, just call me.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate it, and my friends will be thrilled! I can’t wait to call them when I get off,” Hannah said sincerely.

“It was my pleasure, really. I agree with what my brother said, you do a very good job.”

“Well, I can’t quit my day job, my boss would kill me!”

“You work two jobs?” he asked, surprised.

She nodded. “Yep. I’m the AA to the principal at a great elementary school. He’s a wonderful man and if I left to do this full time, he’d have my head!”

“Your husband doesn’t mind that you work two jobs?” he asked, clearly prying.

“My ex doesn’t care about anything other than when he can stop paying child support,” she replied matter-of-factly.

His striking green eyes narrowed as he listened to her speak, but before he could respond his phone rang again.

He cringed when he saw the number, then looked at her and said, “I’m sorry, I have to take this. I’ll see you tomorrow, Hannah.”

She nodded as he went to answer his phone. “Wait, I don’t know your name!”

He paused and said to the person on the other end, “Hold on a second.” He looked at her and smiled. “I’m sorry. Jackson Montrose, or Jack. And I’ll see you tomorrow, Hannah.”

She stood there and watched him walk away, enjoying every second of how his body moved. She started to feel very hot again and turned when he left the room and went back to cleaning.

Chris had just returned from the kitchen and they finished the last few things up in the private room to the required set up.

“Well, that was a very profitable evening!” Chris said.

“Sounds good! I’ll get the bill sorted and cash us out. You heading home?” Hannah asked.

“Nope, Allen could use a hand at the bar, so I’m sticking around to see if I can rake in a few more tips. Catch you later, Hannah. Thanks for roping me in to help,” he replied, his sincerity shining through.

She flashed him a smile. “No worries. Have a great rest of your night!”

He exited through the side door, while she made her way out the main entrance, letting her hair down as she walked.

Her thick auburn curls tumbled past her shoulders, and she ran her fingers through them on her way to Todd’s office to cash out.

She was oblivious to the attractive man in the corner, his eyes on her as he chatted on his phone.

Once in Todd’s office, she signed off on everything she needed to. “You know, this night turned out way better than I expected.”

“Oh really, why’s that?” he asked.

“Because I scored three tickets and backstage passes for the concert tomorrow night!”

Todd slumped back in his chair with a groan. “So much for my quiet night in tomorrow, huh?”

“Absolutely! Enjoy your evening with the kids!”

“Damn it!” he grumbled under his breath.

Hannah left his office, her laughter echoing down the hall to the locker room. She grabbed her phone and purse, and was about to text her friends when she noticed a new message on her screen.

Jackson
You are incredibly beautiful and I can’t wait to get to know you tomorrow night! Sleep well.

She swallowed hard, glancing around to see if anyone had seen her read the text. She couldn’t explain why, but it felt a little risqué and she was totally into it.

She quickly swiped past it, added his name to her contacts, and shot off a text to her best friends.

Hannah
Guess what we are doing tomorrow night?!
