The Alpha and Luna Book 1: His Human Luna

Chapter 5

DARREN

My buddies swing by my room, inviting me to a game of basketball. I agree, and we head down to the court.

This might be my final weekend of carefree fun. My dad has already informed me that post-graduation, I’ll be more involved with the family business and pack affairs.

I’m already familiar with both, but Dad’s been my support. He’s made it clear that after graduation, I’ll be taking on more responsibilities to prepare for my future role as alpha.

On our way to the court, I check in with Liam about his sister. He assures me she’s doing fine and apologizes for her erratic behavior. I express my hope that she won’t cause any more trouble.

He tells me he’s spoken to her and she should leave me be. I hope he’s right.

We play a few rounds of basketball, then take a break to catch our breath.

“Guys, keep this under wraps, but I picked up my mate’s scent earlier today.”

They’re thrilled. Then they question why I’m not out searching for her.

I explain, “I picked up the scent near the human town while I was out running. It was close to the roadside diner. What if she’s a human? I can’t have a human mate.”

They give me a puzzled look. Liam says, “Man, you know wolves frequent the human town all the time. Your mate could have just been at the diner.

“We used to hit that diner after school regularly. I bet it was a wolf there, since most wolves dine there.”

I feel a bit relieved. Maybe he’s right. We did used to eat there often, and other wolves do too. I just felt disheartened when I realized she was at a human restaurant.

I change the topic and suggest a trip to town the next day. I need a distraction from the anticipation of my test results.

The guys don’t need to know about the test until I have the results.

THE NEXT DAY

We drive to town in my jeep. I need to pick up some suits for the increased pack and company business I’ll be handling. My casual clothes won’t suffice anymore.

We enter the mall, bypassing the women’s clothing stores, when I catch my mate’s scent again.

“Mate. Mate. Mate is here, Darren.”

I hadn’t realized I’d stopped in front of a women’s clothing store.

Noah asks, “Dude, are you okay?”

I reply, “She’s here. I can smell her.”

The guys urge me to go into the store, but I just stand at the entrance. The scent is getting stronger. The door swings open. And then I lock eyes with the most stunning hazel eyes I’ve ever seen.

Her skin is a smooth caramel, her hair long and curly black. She wears round black glasses that perfectly frame her face. She’s perfect to me.

I take in her body and find myself licking my lips at the sight of her luscious pink lips.

She has a full chest—probably a 40C—a round backside, a flat stomach, and she’s petite. She can’t be taller than five foot six.

We hold each other’s gaze for what feels like an eternity. Then I realize she’s human. I break eye contact and turn to leave.

I overhear her friend say, “He’s handsome.”

My mate replies, “He’s rude for staring without saying a word.”

I quickly distance myself from her.

“Go back and claim mate. She is beautiful.”

“Goliath, she’s a human. We can’t have a human luna.”

“The Moon Goddess doesn’t make mistakes. She was made for us. If you reject mate, then I will leave you.”

He puts up his mental block after that. I know he’s upset, but I’ll talk to him once he’s calmed down.

The guys ask, “Why did you leave her?”

I give them a bewildered look. They could smell she was human just like I could.

“She’s human. I can’t have a human luna. She would weaken the pack. You guys know this.”

Liam speaks up. “It shouldn’t matter that she’s human. She was made for you. I know that when I find my mate, whether she’s human or not, I will claim her.”

That’s easy for him to say. He’s not an alpha like me. I need a strong luna, and humans aren’t strong.

I don’t hold anything against humans. In fact, some are even paired with members of my pack. But I just can’t envision a human luna.
