Chapter 2

DANIELLA

“Jaxon, how about we stir up some mischief before graduation tonight? Maybe a prank, for old times’ sake?”

We were notorious for our pranks once upon a time, but we put a stop to it after we unintentionally disrupted one of Dad’s crucial meetings. The aftermath was a week of grounding and two months of extra training.

If it weren’t for Mom stepping in, the punishment would’ve been harsher. She’s always our knight in shining armor when we land ourselves in hot water.

“What’s your plan?” he inquires, a mischievous grin playing on his lips. I knew a prank would be the perfect antidote to his gloom.

“What if we unleash some spiders on stage at tonight’s graduation? You know how the principal is petrified of them.”

He ponders over it for a moment before responding. “And how do we pull that off?”

“We can rope in Jaylah and a few of our friends. They can help set everything up during school hours.”

He’s on board with the idea, and we set off to gather our accomplices. We collect Jaylah from the pack house and meet some of our classmates in town, briefing them about our prank.

Everyone’s game, so we embark on a mission to buy as many fake spiders as we can find at short notice.

We have a tight window of three hours to get everything in place before we need to head home and prepare for the graduation ceremony.

We reconvene at the town café to discuss our spider haul and delegate responsibilities for setting up the prank and keeping watch.

As we’re engrossed in our conversation, Kaleb saunters over to our booth. Kaleb is undeniably handsome, with golden hair, piercing blue eyes, and a muscular physique, but he’s the epitome of a bad boy.

He despises all the teachers and rarely attends school. He also has a bone to pick with Jaxon, which is strange, considering Jaxon is generally well-liked.

Initially, Jaxon and I assumed it was because he’s Emily’s son, but we later discovered that he was unaware of his biological mother.

His adoptive parents are Emily’s cousins, the alpha and luna of a neighboring pack. They were unable to conceive, so they adopted him at birth and kept his parentage a secret.

They made our parents and Uncle Liam swear to never reveal the truth, and everyone agreed it was for the best.

Personally, I didn’t agree with their decision, but it wasn’t my place to interfere. Our parents filled us in on Emily and Owen’s deranged attempts to murder our mom.

Dad advised us to keep our distance from Kaleb, but Mom encouraged us to befriend him if we felt inclined to.

However, he doesn’t seem interested in our friendship, especially since he has a grudge against Jaxon.

I suspect he craves popularity at school, but Jaxon always steals the limelight. Kaleb does have his own clique, though.

Kaleb halts at our booth, shooting daggers at Jaxon. “What’s this prank you guys are planning?” Our friends fall silent, refusing to answer him.

I decide to break the silence. “Why the sudden interest? You barely interact with us, so why the curiosity now?”

He shifts his glare to me before retorting. “Just making small talk, half-breed.”

Jerk-offs like him love to throw around the term ‘half-breed’ as an insult. We don’t let it get under our skin, knowing we’re alphas.

Before I can retort, Jaxon rises to his feet, claws bared, growling at him. I can sense Shadow surfacing.

I grasp Jaxon’s hand and coax him to sit back down. “There are humans around. Don’t let him provoke you.”

Jaxon takes deep, calming breaths, trying to pacify himself and Shadow.

“We’re not half-breeds, mutt. We’re alphas, something you’ll never be,” I snap back at him.

He smirks at me. “That’s where you’re mistaken. My dad’s stepping down and I’m taking over as alpha on my birthday in two weeks. You’re all invited to witness a real alpha ascend.”

Skye mind-links Jaxon and me, “He’s still not a real alpha, though.” She and Shadow chuckle in our heads at her comment.

He saunters away from our table, and we resume our prank planning. Once everything’s set, we leave the café to put our plan into action.

We arrive home with just enough time to prepare for the graduation ceremony. I quickly shower and slip into my white, spaghetti-strap mini dress.

I match it with a pair of white heels before joining my parents in the living room. My mom’s eyes well up at the sight of me.

“Does it have to be so short?” my dad questions, earning a playful smack from my mom. I can’t help but chuckle. “I’m just saying, sweetheart. I don’t want to spend the entire night glaring at the men ogling my little girl.”

“Dad, I’ll be wearing my graduation robe over it. Besides, I doubt any guy would dare to look with you and Jaxon around.”

He grins and nods in agreement. He and Jaxon have always been fiercely protective of Dakota and me. Jaxon emerges from his room, looking sharp in his tailored black tuxedo, and Mom insists on a photo session before we head out.

The graduation ceremony is a dull affair until the principal takes the stage and the spiders we planted descend upon him.

His high-pitched scream fills the auditorium, triggering a wave of laughter as he dashes off the stage, frantically brushing off the spiders.

Another teacher has to reassure him that the spiders are fake. Jaxon’s face lights up with a triumphant smile, and I feel a sense of satisfaction for managing to lift his spirits.

Our parents shoot us a stern look, and we instantly receive a mind-link from them. “We know you two are behind this. We thought you had outgrown your prank phase.”

“It was all my idea,” I respond through the mind-link.

Jaxon quickly mind-links me, “Why did you take the blame?”

“Because it was~ my idea. Besides, it’s our last day of school and our birthday is tomorrow. They won’t punish us.”~

He gives me a nod of understanding. I didn’t want him to slip back into his gloom, so I took the blame, just in case there were any repercussions.

Once the chaos subsides, we finally receive our diplomas. We then head back to the pack house for a celebratory dinner arranged by Mom.

She’s planning a grand party tomorrow for our birthday and graduation, so tonight she’s kept it simple with a dinner.

The dinner is served in the grand ballroom, as all the pack members wanted to join in celebrating the graduation of the alpha’s children.
