Chapter One

Book 3: When Love Comes Around

MEGAN

Hearing my bedroom door slowly creak open, I pull my soft orange comforter up over my head in preparation to block out the impending light.
โ€œCome on, Megan. Time to get up,โ€ Gina calls out in a singsong voice.
โ€œNo, Mommy. I donโ€™t want to go to school today,โ€ I mumble from underneath my blanket haven.
I hear her open the blinds, but itโ€™s no use. I am prepared for this maneuver.
โ€œFirst of all, itโ€™s Saturday,โ€ Gina reminds me. โ€œSecond of all, if it were a weekday, youโ€™d have to go to school because youโ€™re the teacher. And third of allโ€”โ€
She whips the covers off me, immediately gasping in shock.
โ€œMEGAN,โ€ Gina screeches, covering her eyes. โ€œYOUโ€™RE NAKED!โ€
Getting up slowly from the bed, with no shame, I reach above my head, closing my eyes, stretching, and yawning.
I slowly open my eyes to see my other best friend, Evelynn, and her brother, Trevor, standing at my bedroom door. Evelynn looks as shocked as Gina.
Trevor is standing with his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe, with a devilish grin on his face.
โ€œGood morning,โ€ I greet them. โ€œIf you wouldnโ€™t mind, Iโ€™m going to get dressed now. Unless, of course, you care to join me.โ€
Trevor takes a step into the room, and Evie quickly grabs him by the wrist, pulling him into the living room of mine and Ginaโ€™s small apartment.
Gina quickly shuts the door behind them, remaining inside with me.
โ€œReally, Megan?โ€ she admonishes, arms crossed over her chest, a stern look of disapproval on her face.
โ€œWhat? You came in here pulling the covers off me,โ€ I remind her, hands on my hips.
โ€œHave you no shame?โ€ she quietly chastises.
I toss my long red hair over my shoulder.
I look down at my five-foot-five frame, from my perky b-cup-sized breasts to my flat stomach and ample hips. I look back up at Gina.
โ€œNope, not even a little. Should I?โ€ I challenge with an arched brow.
โ€œNo.โ€ She sighs. Conceding, Gina smiles at me. โ€œYouโ€™re beautiful, but canโ€™t you, at least, pretend to be a little modest sometimes?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ I reply flatly.
โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have walked out into the living room naked had I known we had company. But you brought them to me. I canโ€™t help it that you decided to snatch the covers from my naked body.
โ€œYouโ€™re right, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ Gina apologizes.
I smile to myself. Sheโ€™s so malleable.
โ€œNo biggie. So, whatโ€™s going on, whereโ€™s the fire?โ€ I ask, rifling through my dresser drawers, looking for some clothes to put on.
โ€œTrevor came in last night. He took two weeks of leave for the holidays. Remember? The idea was for the guys to use this time to get the fittings for their tuxes and figure out their game plan for the bachelor party.
โ€œUs girls are supposed to check out venues, dresses, flowers, and do cake tastings. Starting today,โ€ Gina says.
โ€œSounds like the guys get the easy part. Canโ€™t I go with them?โ€ I whine.
โ€œYouโ€™re the maid of honor, Megan,โ€ Gina replies.
โ€œWho came up with that stupid idea?โ€ I ask, pulling on a pair of skintight jeans, a black cowl-necked sweater, and high-heeled leather boots.
โ€œYou. As a matter of fact, you practically demanded to be the maid of honor,โ€ Gina comments.
โ€œUgh, why you gotta bring up old shit?โ€ I roll my eyes, teasing her. โ€œLet me just brush my teeth and hair, and Iโ€™ll be out in a second.โ€
Gina knows Iโ€™m just messing with her. She exits the room, leaving me in peace, as I walk into my master bath to finish getting ready.
Honestly, I donโ€™t know why I wanted to be the maid of honor.
Maybe itโ€™s the part of me that likes to feel important. Iโ€™m not in denial about who I am. Iโ€™m loud-mouthed, bold, sometimes crass, beautiful, and unapologetic about it. What I am not is a romantic sap.
So why play the part of the caring, doting, overly involved maid of honor? Because, although Iโ€™m not a sucker for the romantic kind of love, I do have a deep love for my two best friends, Evelynn Woods, and Regina Santos.
Evelynn is getting married to the man sheโ€™s loved most of her life, and I want a front-row seat.
I wonder how Trevor feels about the wedding. Evie is his little sister and Hunter is his best friend.
I suppose you couldnโ€™t ask for a better setup than thatโ€”as long as they stay together. Iโ€™ve only met Trevor a handful of times, but from what Iโ€™ve heard, heโ€™s a ladiesโ€™ man.
Like me, he probably doesnโ€™t buy into all this mushy-gushy romance crap either.
Trevor is absolutely edible.
He is about six foot three. He has brown skin, a shade or two darker than Evieโ€™s. He has soft brown eyes and a lean muscular frame kept in shape by the military. What he does in the military, I have no clue.
I know Evieโ€™s fiancรฉ, Hunter, was a field medic, and now that heโ€™s out of the army, heโ€™s a paramedic at Memorial Hospital.
But in all this time, no one has ever mentioned what Trevor does in the military, which makes him even more intriguing.
Iโ€™m not sure if Evelynn would be upset if I slept with her brother.
Dating him is out of the questionโ€”I donโ€™t do relationships. So far, Iโ€™ve kept my distance, out of respect for my best friend. But, if Trevor ever makes the first moveโ€ฆ
โ€œFor crying out loud, Megan, are you ready yet?โ€ Evie shouts from the other side of the bedroom door.
โ€œYep. Letโ€™s get this party started,โ€ I announce, dramatically flinging the bedroom door open and sauntering out.
