The only thing Zavyar and Serena have in common is that both of their fathers more or less blackmailed them into marrying each other. Zavyar is determined to regain his freedom, even if it means making himself so detestable that Serena canโ€™t help but divorce him. By the time he realizes that thereโ€™s a warm heart behind his wifeโ€™s icy demeanor, it might be too late. Can he undo all the damage heโ€™s done and become the true love she thought sheโ€™d never find?

It Isnโ€™t Yours

Book 1: Iโ€™m Married to a Moron

ZAVYAR

Iโ€™m this close to wringing Oliver for answers.
The many edges of this cheap plastic chair are digging into my bones, and itโ€™s so fucking humid I might as well be standing in the monsoon outside to be as drenched as I am sitting in here.
With all the money he makes, youโ€™d think the guy could afford decent decor.
โ€œWell?โ€ I try not to bark at him.
โ€œThe girl is pregnant, Zavyarโ€ฆbutโ€ฆโ€
โ€œBut?โ€
โ€œIt isnโ€™t yours.โ€
Oh, thank God.
I collapse in the uncomfortable chair as if it were plush velvet. My worst nightmare just died before destroying my life.
A five-star luxury suite would have served zero purposes if the news were any different. So no, Iโ€™m never complaining about Oliverโ€™s dingy office again.
โ€œI am the happiest man alive,โ€ I laugh.
โ€œAre you, brother?โ€ Adam frowns, crossing his arms over his chest. โ€œFor how long? Until your next indiscretion?
โ€œDo you have any idea the amount of money and time we had to invest to keep this from the press? Not to mention the amount of money and time we would have had to invest if the news were true.โ€
โ€œBut it wasnโ€™t true.โ€ I canโ€™t stop grinning.
Iโ€™ve spent the last four months walking on hot coals, pampering that odious woman ever since she walked through the heavy doors of my pristine office at Velshi Financials claiming I was her baby daddy.
I vaguely remembered the details, but her resolute stanceโ€”and some awfully compromising photographsโ€”filled in the gaps, making me doubt my own judgment about the night weโ€™d spent.
Thatโ€™s easier when your reputation is less than stellar when it comes to pretty women.
But thatโ€™s all over now. Iโ€™m not about to not celebrate when I can.
โ€œIโ€™m sure Mr. Velshi would be relieved too,โ€ Oliver says, taking out his phone and punching keys to call Dad.
โ€œHeโ€™ll be pleased to know the private eye we used has decided to permanently join the team.โ€
โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s an added expense we wouldnโ€™t have to incur if someone could keep it in their pants.โ€ Adam glares at me.
โ€œHe unearthed her shady boyfriend and how they both tricked me. She didnโ€™t even stay in the room once her work was done.โ€
I offer the explanation to placate him, although he probably knows the details more than I do. Adam is anal like that. โ€œI was passed out the entire night. It was all orchestrated.โ€
โ€œNo one tricked you into getting drunk. You did that on your own pretty amazingly.โ€
The rebuke in his tone makes me flinch, and I take a deep breath to not show it. โ€œMy point is that the private eye is an asset. We can use a man like that.โ€
While Oliver turns away to fill Dad in on the outcome of my nipped-in-the-bud scandal, I nod at my brother to lighten up. He is a year younger but behaves as if he has decades on me.
โ€œYouโ€™re acting as if youโ€™d rather the child was mine,โ€ I tease him.
โ€œI would rather you had a lifestyle where we didnโ€™t have to worry about you fathering anything out of wedlock.โ€ Adam occupies the other crappy plastic chair. โ€œThis has to stop, Zav.โ€
The drama.
I still remember the sting of Dadโ€™s reprimand: If it were a girl from one of the Families, I might have considered. But a bartender, Zavyar? How could you?!
Of course Oliver Blunt and his reputation management team had to be set in motion immediately to sort out this mess.
His business has only grown ever since he took Velshi Financials as a sole client. All thanks to me, there is never a dull day in his professional life.
I take a sip from my water bottle. โ€œI know you have a moral compass pointing north for a brain, but the rest of us are normal, Adam.โ€
โ€œGetting a reputation for how many women you bang and making headlines at every single tabloid every single month is not normal.โ€
Heโ€™s full-on in dad mode right now. โ€œItโ€™s immoral. This isnโ€™t what the Velshis are known for.โ€
Again with the family prestige and shit.
It was much easier when I was in Englandโ€”away from Kemoraโ€”where not everyone knew the young scion of one of the founding families of a small but prosperous island nation in the Indian Ocean.
I was still popular. I still got the girls. As long as I stayed at the top of my class and played club cricket, nobody back home cared for what else I did.
Now, back in Kemora, my reputation is all that matters.
โ€œDid it ever occur to you that most of it might be untrue?โ€ Itโ€™s frustrating how everyone believes everything they read. Besides, Iโ€™m known for my business acumen just as much.
โ€œI may be all smiles and kisses in public, but most of the time Iโ€™m calling it a night and going home. Alone.โ€
โ€œAnd yet the barista wasnโ€™t lying about sleeping with you.โ€
โ€œBartender. And she was lying.โ€
โ€œYou took her to your room. You remember that much clearly. So the point is, she might as well have spent the night with you like those other million girls.โ€
I sigh. โ€œIโ€™m not a nun, Adi.โ€
โ€œYou donโ€™t say.โ€
โ€œWhat do you want from me?โ€ I spread my arms, daring him to unleash. โ€œTo swear off women? Vow celibacy?โ€
โ€œCan we have that in writing?โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re joking.โ€
He shakes his head and I realize how serious his face has been all this time.
โ€œYouโ€™re not joking?โ€
โ€œDad told me if you came out of this unscathed, heโ€™ll make you sign a contract.โ€
โ€œOf celibacy?โ€
Before Adam can confirm or deny any of it, Oliver walks over to me holding out his phone. โ€œHe wants to have a word.โ€ He shoves it in my hand before I can give an excuse to ditch the summons.
I clear my throat, press the device to my ear, and say a prayer. โ€œDad?โ€
โ€œYou have a sore throat?โ€
โ€œNo.โ€ It feels like sandpaper though. โ€œSo, youโ€ฆ how are you?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m great.โ€ With that tone, he might as well wish me dead.
โ€œI just spent thousands to keep my son from ruining the entire familyโ€™s reputation. Iโ€™m over the moon that I stopped that from happeningโ€ฆuntil next time.โ€
โ€œDad, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ Iโ€™m not, but he canโ€™t see my face. โ€œYou can stop with the shaming.โ€
โ€œOh, you donโ€™t know what shame is, Zavyar. But letโ€™s move on. Adam told you about the contract?โ€
My heart sinks. โ€œYou serious?โ€
โ€œLike the money I just spent.โ€
I turn to Adam for backup, but he just shrugs. โ€œShe was lying. None of it was true.โ€
โ€œWell, son, Iโ€™m not waiting until a woman walks in telling the truth this time about something as egregious as a bastard grandchild. Is Adam there? Put on the speakerphone.โ€
I press the button and glare at my brother. โ€œGo ahead. Talk bad about me like Iโ€™m not here.โ€
โ€œHey Dad,โ€ he says into the phone and winks at me. โ€œI think weโ€™re good with the Celibacy Clause.โ€
โ€œNo way in hellโ€”โ€
โ€œI have the papers ready,โ€ the speakerphone cuts me off. โ€œHave lunch with me tomorrow and weโ€™ll discuss it in my office.โ€
โ€œSure.โ€ Adam nods. โ€œIโ€™ll help you fine-tune the document. I know some excellent lawyers.โ€
โ€œSo proud of you, son.โ€ Dadโ€™s voice is dripping with adoration. โ€œI couldnโ€™t have asked for a better child.โ€
โ€œExcuse me?โ€ I butt in. โ€œIโ€™m your child too, you know.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re also the bane of my existence who keeps me up at night wondering why I never wore a condom that time.โ€
Adam bursts out cackling, while Oliverโ€™s chin is dripping with water he sprayed all over his table. Tears are streaming down the cheeks of both men as they make no attempt to be polite on my account.
โ€œSubtle.โ€ I frown at the phone. โ€œYou kiss Mom with that mouth?โ€
โ€œAdam, make a note,โ€ Dad hollers. โ€œWe also need a Donโ€™t-Be-A-Wise-Ass Clause.โ€
Unbelievable.
I throw back my head and groan but hold my tongue.
โ€œWeโ€™ll see you tomorrow, Dad,โ€ Adam says, and the line disconnects from the other end. He turns to me. โ€œYou better pull up your big boy pants and deal.โ€
This could all be a joke. But itโ€™s my father weโ€™re talking about. Knowing him, he could very well be trying to trap me into something. I wonโ€™t know what Iโ€™m stepping into until Iโ€™m already in it.
I only hope Iโ€™m better at this game than he is.
