Prologue
This is what I know so far.
When I am born, I’m going to be called Chelsea Annabel, and I’m going to be special. That’s because I have one father and two mothers. Other kids only get one.
We went to a hospital in Portland where they took stuff from my mother Cassie and Daddy to make me, then put it inside Aunt Jo.
Everyone was so excited when I began to grow that Aunt Jo started calling Cassie “Mama Cass,” after a singer from the sixties in a group called the Mamas and the Papas. She plays their music all the time.
Mama Cass started calling her “Mama Jo,” because it was taking the two of them to get me born.
Then there was an accident, and Mama Cass went to heaven. It’s not bad for me, because I talk to her all the time, but Daddy and Mama Jo miss her a lot.
Mama Jo says when I’m born I won’t belong to her anymore, I’ll just be Daddy’s. Sometimes she cries about it. I’m confused. I guess one mother can’t just take the place of another.
It feels like we’re going to work now. Mama Jo owns a coffee bar, but she can’t have any coffee, ‘cause it isn’t good for me.
We live upstairs over the bar, so it doesn’t take us long to get there. Daddy lives in a condo.
It’s starting to get hard to get comfortable in here. My feet are up around my neck. But Mama Jo says in another month, I’ll have all the room I want, so in the meantime, will I please stay off her bladder?
Whoops! Are we falling? I think we’re falling. Yup. There’s the stair against my bottom.
And there’s a word I haven’t heard before.
