Chapter 1: The Oath That Bleeds
Sylviara knew. She had known long before the raven arrived from the northern strongholds, long before her brother summoned her to the great hall.
The gods had been whispering for weeks in ways both subtle and insistent: in the shifting patterns of snow on the trees, in the way ravens circled without cawing, in the uneasy silence of the skalds as they faltered mid-song. Even the air itself felt wrong, taut as a drawn bowstring. Change was coming, and it would not wait.
Snow fell like whispered secrets, muting the high towers and battlements of Hrafnhall Keep beneath a thick white shroud. Each flake drifted soundlessly, gathering on ramparts, frozen stone, and the fur lining of Sylviara’s cloak.
Smoke curled from the chimneys in slow spirals, staining the gray sky with the scent of pine and peat. Wind tore across the fjord below, sharp enough to bite through even the heaviest furs.
Sylviara stood atop the parapets, gloved hands resting on frost-rimmed stone, dark eyes fixed on the horizon where the fjord bled into the distant sea. The cold stung her cheeks, but she barely felt it. What chilled her ran deeper than winter. At last, she turned and descended into the keep.
Her boots struck the stone floors in a deliberate rhythm as she moved through Hrafnhall’s icy corridors. Servants curtsied as she passed, eyes lowered, movements stiff with unease. Even the pages, boys scarcely ten winters old, straightened sharply at her approach.
It was not fear alone that followed her. It was recognition: the sense of a woman already claimed by fate, yet determined to meet it unbroken.
In the courtyard, a lone raven perched on the arm of a weather-worn statue, its feathers stark against the snow. Sylviara paused, tilting her head. From her pocket, she drew a strip of dried venison and tossed it upward.
The bird snapped it from the air and launched into the cloud-heavy sky, wings beating silently into the gray. An omen given. An omen taken.
Her breath misted as she approached the iron-bound doors of the great hall. Frost traced delicate patterns across the wood. She rested her gloved palm against the cold surface and drew a slow, steadying breath before pushing inside. Warmth washed over her, but not comfort.
Firelight roared in the central hearth, dividing the chamber into shifting bands of gold and shadow. Iron chandeliers gleamed overhead, their glow swallowed by the hall’s far reaches. The air was thick with smoke, iron, and damp wool.
Jarls and elder council members lined the long tables, cloaked in wolf pelts, silent as carved figures. Tension stretched between them like ice over deep water.
At the far end stood her brother Ulfar beneath the banner of their house, a black raven on deep blue. He turned as she entered, his expression already hardened into command.
“You took your time,” he said.
“I was in the shrine tower,” she replied evenly. “You summoned me.”
“A raven arrived from Vargfjord this morning.” His voice carried through the hall. “Their chieftain agrees to peace. But only if it is sealed with blood.”
Sylviara felt something inside her settle into cold certainty. “A marriage,” she said quietly.
“A bond,” he corrected.
“And you chose me.”
“You are of age. You have value.”
Her smile was thin and bitter. “So I am a coin now? Something to be traded?”
“This is how peace is made,” Ulfar said. “Not with blades, but with alliances.”
“And what do you know of the man I am to wed?”
His jaw tightened. For a moment, he said nothing. And that silence told her everything.
“You do not even know his name,” she said softly.
“It does not matter. His house is strong. That is what matters. That we have food next winter. That we are not raided come spring.”
She looked past him to the elders. “Do you all agree that I be sent blind into a wolf’s den?”
Not one met her gaze.
An older lord cleared his throat. “The Northmen are ruthless. If we refuse, they will take what they want with steel.”
“So I am the shield,” she murmured. “The price of keeping this castle safe.”
Ulfar stepped closer, eyes cold as forged iron. “You are the answer, Sylviara. The key to holding our lands.”
Her spine straightened. “When?”
“You leave at week’s end.”
She inclined her head once, regal, composed. A queen’s acceptance, not a sister’s. Then she turned and walked out without another word.
That night, she did not sleep. Wrapped in furs beside her frost-laced window, Sylviara wrote by dwindling firelight. Ink flowed across the pages of her journal: constellations mapped in careful lines, recipes for healing drafts, runes of protection and binding.
The gods do not speak plainly, she wrote. They test with silence.
Fear was not her enemy. Helplessness was.
She thought of the man waiting in the north, unnamed, unseen, unknowable, and the weight in her chest tightened. Yet her hand never trembled. She wrote until the fire burned low, her mind racing through contingencies and survival.
The days that followed moved with solemn purpose. She said her farewells quietly, committing every sound of Hrafnhall to memory: the bells tolling from the tower, the clash of practice swords in the yard, the laughter of kitchen girls and scullery boys.
In the gods’ chamber, she lit candles to Frigg, left coins for Tyr, and offered blood to older gods whose names had long since faded from memory.
With the healer, she prepared bundles of herbs: valerian for sleep, sage for wounds, elderflower for fever. Her hands worked with practiced calm while her thoughts wandered northward into shadow.
In the nursery, she told stories of clever women who outwitted monsters and of warriors who triumphed without raising a blade. One small girl clung to her, cheeks chapped red from winter.
“They will hurt you,” the child whispered. “Don’t go.”
Sylviara gathered her close. “I will not break.” She spoke gently. “Fire does not break. It burns.”
She trained daily in the courtyard, practicing strikes and parries with wooden blades. Each movement was controlled, deliberate, not for pride, but for survival. Servants paused to watch, recognizing the quiet strength that had once made her father favor her above all his children.
On the eve of her departure, she inspected her belongings: bone-carved runes, her grandmother’s pendant, jars of herbs, wrapped roots, a driftwood comb, flint, and a flask of mead. No jewels. No silks. Only what a woman of purpose would carry.
Morning came brittle and gray. Snow lay thick across the courtyard stones. Guards waited beside the sled, prepared for the journey north. Her steed, white as bone, stood calm beneath the falling flakes.
Ulfar waited at the steps, advisors flanking him like shadows. She met his gaze. For a heartbeat, she saw the boy he had once been, the child who had hidden behind her skirts in these halls.
“When I return,” she said, her voice cutting clean through the cold, “it will be on my own terms.”
Ulfar looked away first.
She did not. Nor did she look back at the castle as she mounted the sled. The reins snapped taut. The runners lurched forward, carving a path through untouched snow. Wind swallowed the sounds of the courtyard, of home, of everything she had ever known.
Sylviara faced north. Toward the unknown. Toward the man she would marry. Toward a fate still unwritten.
