Dharma is the newest resident of a house with a mysterious history. Not only is it the real-life setting of her mother's favorite horror novel, but it is also the site of a brutal massacre.

Previously, Dharma hadn't believed in ghosts, but her new home is determined to convince her otherwise.

Chasing Cars

โ€œI donโ€™t want to move into a spooky murder house,โ€ I complained to Haylee as we finished mopping the kitchen. โ€œI want to stay here with you.โ€
She paused with the bucket in her hand. โ€œWhat? What do you mean? What happened there?โ€
โ€œYou donโ€™t know? It was all our mothers would talk about for months. Virginia Cole wrote an entire book about it.โ€
โ€œI usually tune my mother out,โ€ Haylee said. โ€œPlus, reading is more Momโ€™s thing.โ€
โ€œI havenโ€™t read the book either,โ€ I admitted as I propped the mop up against the wall. โ€œBut I did google some of the details. Theyโ€™re grisly.โ€
โ€œGrisly?โ€ Haylee repeated, sounding intrigued. โ€œTell me more.โ€
โ€œWell, according to witness accounts, the Johnsons were an average family. But then one night, the eldest daughter returned home to discover her entire family had been poisoned.โ€
Haylee gasped. โ€œPoor girl! Was she the sole survivor?โ€
โ€œNo, her brother survived as well, but the articles didnโ€™t go into detail about him. He was a minor at the time.โ€
โ€œDid they ever find out who did it?โ€
โ€œIt was one of the daughters,โ€ I told her. โ€œI think her name was Melinda. Apparently, she had been suffering from some mental health issues.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s how they determined it was her?โ€ Haylee asked, sounding disapproving as she added, โ€œHaving mental health issues doesnโ€™t make you a monster.โ€
โ€œNoโ€”but itโ€™s hard to imagine something so horrible happening in such a beautiful home,โ€ I said.
โ€œI saw the web images of the place. I would love to live in a house like that,โ€ Haylee confessed. She then quickly added, โ€œBut I wouldnโ€™t trade you for the privilege. Ugh, I feel so nauseated.โ€ She looked at me with big eyes. โ€œWhat am I going to do without you?โ€
โ€œYou may finally get the courage to ask Payton out, now that I wonโ€™t be around to stand in your way,โ€ I countered.
Payton was a boy in our grade that weโ€™d both had a crush on since freshman year; to preserve our friendship, weโ€™d resolved to never date him.
โ€œDharma, if I were forced to choose between you and Payton, I would pick you every time,โ€ she insisted loyally.
โ€œWhat if there were two of him?โ€ I countered, raising my brow.
Haylee paused and chewed on her bottom lip thoughtfully as she pretended to consider it. Her outrageous expression caused me to burst out laughing.
Before I could elaborate on the scenario, my mother appeared at the threshold. โ€œYou missed a spot in the corner,โ€ she said, pointing at the immaculate floor.
Haylee sighed as she whisked the mop across the area.
โ€œWhy did you have to sell to such picky buyers?โ€ I grumbled as I shed my rubber gloves and tossed them into the bucket where we stored the remainder of our cleaning supplies.
โ€œBecause they were willing to pay the asking price,โ€ my mother replied as she inspected the room. Appearing satisfied, she returned her attention to me. โ€œDid you remember to drop off the donation boxes?โ€
โ€œWe did that this morning, but full disclosure, most of Dharmaโ€™s stuff went to me,โ€ Haylee quipped as she brushed her long, blonde hair over her shoulder. โ€œIโ€™m a worthy cause.โ€
My mother attempted to give Haylee a stern look but apparently couldnโ€™t prevent the corners of her lips from upturning. โ€œI think I am going to miss you the most.โ€
โ€œAnd Iโ€™m going to miss you guys, Mrs. Dupree!โ€ Haylee exclaimed. โ€œI canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m starting my senior year without Dharma.โ€
When Haylee made this declaration, my stomach did a flip-flop. Haylee and I had been best friends since my first day of kindergarten, and our relationship had survived every phase of my development.
Weโ€™d suffered through puberty together, and when most of my class had been filled with anxiety over starting high school, Iโ€™d felt secure knowing that Haylee would be at my side.
But this year I would be going to a new school, miles away, and Haylee wouldnโ€™t be there to lend me her confidence.
Hot tears threatened the corners of my eyes. Haylee took notice, and her eyes began to water as well. But before we were able to dissolve into an unconsolable mess, my mother intervened.
โ€œYou guys will still be able to talk and see each other,โ€ she reasoned as she wrapped a protective arm over my shoulder. โ€œAnd during the school breaks, we can fly Haylee out to visit.โ€
โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to move,โ€ I declared. โ€œEspecially not to a house that is reported to be haunted.โ€
โ€œThe house is not hauntedโ€”at least not anymore.โ€ My mother chuckled. โ€œAccording to Virginia, they were able to discover why the house was so active, and it has been dormant since.โ€
โ€œDormant?โ€ Haylee said. โ€œThat just means the ghosts are asleep, biding their time until they can find a teen girl to gobble up!โ€
I poked her in the ribs. โ€œStop being so dramatic.โ€
โ€œThe house is very charming,โ€ my mother said. โ€œAnd due to the new zoning laws, I was able to acquire a business license for the first level, so I will never be far from Dharma or home.โ€
I did my best not to make a face. Though my mother considered this beneficial, I had to strongly disagree; no child wanted to be under their parentโ€™s constant surveillance.
โ€œIf the downstairs is being used for your clinic, then where will we live?โ€ I demanded.
โ€œOnly the formal rooms and a single guest bathroom will be designated for business. There is a den, two additional bathrooms, a kitchen, and five bedrooms that should suit our living needs,โ€ my mother rattled off promptly, signaling that she would hear no other protests.
This was a conversation weโ€™d had on several occasions, and I supposed she was getting weary.
โ€œGood,โ€ I said, relenting. โ€œThat means we can reserve a room just for Haylee.โ€
โ€œI can ship you some of my stuff, if you want to personalize it,โ€ she offered.
โ€œThis can be an adventure for all of us,โ€ my mother said, spreading her arms so that we could gather in a quick group hug.
As she released us, she said, โ€œNow that the cleaning is complete, we need to get a move on. I would like to arrive at the house before tomorrow evening. Haylee, why donโ€™t you help Dharma carry out the rest of our bags while I lock up?โ€
Reluctantly, Haylee followed me to the front door, where the remaining bags had been stored. โ€œThis is so unfair,โ€ Haylee whined as she slipped my overnight bag over her shoulder. โ€œI wish I could go with you.โ€
โ€œAnd miss your chance with Payton?โ€ I teased as I opened the door.
โ€œYouโ€™re moving to California, the land of the beautiful people,โ€ Haylee said. โ€œYouโ€™ll meet boys far better than Payton.โ€
โ€œWe arenโ€™t moving to Hollywood,โ€ I reminded her. โ€œThe boys in our new neighborhood will probably be just as boring as the boys here.โ€
โ€œSoon weโ€™ll have to start referring to the boys in our age group as men,โ€ Haylee remarked.
โ€œNah, they will still be boys,โ€ I said as we loaded the bags into the hatchback of my motherโ€™s car and slammed it shut. โ€œBesides, I doubt any of them will be interested in me.โ€
Haylee guffawed and shook her head. โ€œWith your dark hair and flashing green eyes? I donโ€™t see how any man could resist.โ€
I gazed at Haylee, drinking in her blue eyes, blonde hair, and all-American good looks. I had always been envious of her because she had easily blended in at school.
Though my father was of European heritage, my mother was from India and stuck out like a sore thumb in our community. I had inherited her dark hair and rich complexion and my fatherโ€™s bone structure and green eyes.
My mother would often ask me to look her in the eye, claiming she could see a glimmer of my father within.
โ€œMoving somewhere more diverse may be an advantage,โ€ Haylee said. โ€œMost of the hillbillies around here donโ€™t know what to do with a girl like you.โ€
โ€œI wouldnโ€™t know what to do with them either,โ€ I muttered in a low voice, because my mother was now standing on the stoop and struggling with the lock on the front door.
The bolt was rusted from years of disuse. Nobody in town was in the habit of double locking their doorsโ€”which was fine by us kids, since our parentsโ€™ complete disregard for our safety came in handy when we wanted to sneak out.
Finally, my mother managed to secure the lock. โ€œItโ€™s going to be hard to get into the habit of locking our doors at night,โ€ she commented.
Haylee leaned into me and jeered, โ€œNo more late nights for you.โ€
I shook my head. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter. There will be no Haylee to enjoy them with.โ€
Her eyes began to water as she gathered me into a bear hug. โ€œI will come visit you every chance I get.โ€
โ€œYou swear?โ€
โ€œI promise,โ€ she stated vehemently. โ€œNow, you better be off. The sun is waning, and the night threatensโ€ฆ,โ€ she announced in a dramatic tone, attempting to break the tension.
โ€œHaylee, I donโ€™t know what we are going to do without you.โ€ My mother walked over to her, offering a parting hug.
โ€œI will miss you too, Deva,โ€ she confessed, wrapping her arms around my mother, then asking, โ€œIs it all right to call you Deva?โ€
โ€œJust this once,โ€ my mother joked as she released Haylee. Turning to me, she asked, โ€œAre you ready?โ€
Though I was anything but ready, I nodded in compliance before turning to Haylee. โ€œIโ€™ll text you the entire trip.โ€
โ€œJust not past ten,โ€ Haylee cautioned me. โ€œI have my job orientation tomorrow, and my mom will kill me if Iโ€™m late.โ€
My mother slid into the driverโ€™s side and started the car, signaling that it was time to wrap things up. I climbed in, rolling down the window so Haylee and I could continue our farewells.
โ€œIโ€™ll text you every day,โ€ I said.
โ€œYou better!โ€ Haylee called, waving as she jogged to follow the car down the street.
I stuck my hand out the window and waved until my mother pulled onto the main road and I lost sight of her.
I sighed and focused on the road rushing away instead. โ€œWhy do we have to move?โ€
My motherโ€™s fists gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. โ€œDharmaโ€ฆweโ€™ve talked about this.โ€
โ€œI know, I knowโ€ฆ,โ€ I moaned. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I will not mention it again.โ€
I knew full well why my mother anticipated a fresh start. After my fatherโ€™s death, sheโ€™d become introverted, closed her clinic, and escaped through books.
That was how sheโ€™d discovered Virginia Cole and the authorโ€™s haunted old home.
And now it was our haunted old home.
