When Lily finds her boyfriend cheating on her the summer before senior year, it's just another broken piece in her already disappointing life. Then she meets Mason, who seems equally as broken for a different reason, but together they make summer their own and set off to complete a bucket list of promises they vow not to break...and maybe some feelings develop along the way. But their summer fling ends in disaster when Lily and Mason realize they're from rival schools, competing in rival teams. Even worse, when a tragic accident puts their priorities into perspective, can Lily and Mason find a way to be together, and will their friendsโ€”and the ultra-competitive sports teamsโ€”allow them to have the happy ending they dream of...?

LILY

I canโ€™t believe what Iโ€™m seeing. Oliver, sex hair and shirtless, Leah trembling in her bra and panties behind him. My boyfriend and my best friend.
An icy rage comes over me, and all I can say is, โ€œHow long?โ€
โ€œThis is the first time,โ€ says Olly.
โ€œSix months,โ€ says Leah at the same time.
Olly and I had been together two years, and heโ€™s been cheating on me with her for six months. The two of them look terrified, like Iโ€™m about to grab a knife from the kitchen and cut his cheating dick off.
Maybe I should, I think, but instead I leave without saying another word.
I run from his house, get in my car, and drive on autopilot until I find myself at my favorite running trail on the outskirts of the city. Then I just start walking, not giving two shits that Iโ€™m still in a dress and sandals.
Iโ€™m halfway around the lake, totally alone with the trees, when I finally let myself cry. Two years wasted on that two-faced dirtbag. My whole life feels like a lie. What a fucked-up way to end the summer.
Iโ€™m full-on sobbing when I round a bend in the trail and stop dead in my tracks.
There, about twenty feet ahead, is a guy climbing out of the water, completely naked.
For a second, my brain short-circuits. Heโ€™s tall, at least six-four, and broad-shouldered, his skin tanned golden from a summer full of sun. Water cascades down defined muscles, from his shoulders to his chiseled abs, and lowerโ€ฆ
Oh my god, Iโ€™m staring.
โ€œSorry!โ€ I say, my voice higher-pitched than usual.
He looks up, startled, then puts his hands over his crotch. โ€œNo oneโ€™s usually here!โ€
I cover my face with my hands. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t haveโ€ฆโ€ I trail off, not sure how to finish that sentence. I shouldnโ€™t have walked here?
โ€œToss me those shorts?โ€ he asks.
I look down at a pair of red running shorts on a rock nearby, with his shoes and socks next to them. After I toss them over, I turn my back.
โ€œI, uhโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t mean to interrupt... your bath?โ€ I mumble.
He laughs. โ€œI actually bathe at home, thank you. I was swimming after my run.โ€
โ€œNaked?โ€
โ€œThereโ€™s usually not any peeping toms around.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not a peeping tom! You shouldnโ€™t be skinny dipping here, itโ€™s a public...โ€
I turn to confront him but lose my words. Heโ€™s walking toward his shoes, shorts on, but still no shirt. He sits on the rock to put on his shoes. His impressive arm muscles flex as he ties them and water drips from the brown curly hair hanging down just above his emerald green eyes. When he finishes, he looks up at me, smiles, totally unbothered that a stranger just saw him naked.
โ€œRough day, Princess?โ€
His question catches me off guard. โ€œWhat?โ€
โ€œYou look like youโ€™ve been crying.โ€
โ€œNo, Iโ€™m fine,โ€ I assure him quickly.
โ€œYou donโ€™t look fine,โ€ he states.
I glance back down the trail, suddenly overwhelmed by everythingโ€”the breakup, the humiliation, the fact that I just saw a very attractive guy naked. โ€œI should probably get going,โ€ I say.
โ€œIโ€™m a good listener,โ€ he says, patting the rock for me to sit next to him. โ€œTell me whatโ€™s up.โ€
โ€œWhy would I open up to a stranger?โ€
โ€œStranger? Youโ€™ve seen me naked. Plus, strangers are the best secret keepers.โ€
He might have a point. I canโ€™t tell anyone I know. Olly is like the most popular guy in school. People wonโ€™t feel bad he cheated on me, theyโ€™ll just think Iโ€™m pathetic for letting it happen for six months. Might be nice to actually say it out loud without any fear of a drama bomb going off all around me. Fuck it.
โ€œI just caught my boyfriend of two years cheating on me with my best friend,โ€ I blurt out.
He whistles. โ€œThatโ€™s rough.โ€
I start pacing in front of him. โ€œItโ€™s been going on for six months!โ€ I yell, kicking a stone, instantly regretting it when pain shoots through my big toe. โ€œI donโ€™t get it. Itโ€™s not like I didnโ€™t put out!โ€ I shake my head. โ€œAnd my best friendโ€ฆโ€ I whisper, sitting down next to the stranger. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to kill me out here, are you?โ€ I ask skeptically. โ€œI watch true crime documentaries.โ€
He chuckles. โ€œIโ€™m not going to kill you.โ€
โ€œSenior year is going to suck,โ€ I grumble, pulling my knees up to my chest.
โ€œYou go to Ridgewood, right?โ€ he asks.
โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ I say, wondering how he knows me. Do I know him?
With a mischievous grin, he points at himself and says, โ€œGreendale.โ€
Just when I didnโ€™t think this could get any more awkward, naked hot guy goes to my arch-rival high schoolโ€ฆ
โ€œSo we should NOT be talking.โ€
โ€œRight,โ€ he says. โ€œMortal enemies and all that.โ€
โ€œThough, maybe it doesnโ€™t matterโ€”I might as well transfer out of state after what happened today.โ€
โ€œIโ€™d hate for our state to lose such a beauty over some douchebagโ€™s mistake.โ€
Is heโ€ฆ flirting? I ignore it. โ€œI just donโ€™t know who Iโ€™m even going to be able to talk to at school after this.โ€
โ€œYou must have other friends?โ€ he asks.
โ€œYeah. But my best friend Harry is on the football team with Olly and will probably stop talking to me. Ava might still be my friend.โ€ I sigh.
โ€œWait a minuteโ€”Olly? You donโ€™t mean Oliver Kingsley, do you?โ€
โ€œYou know him?โ€ I ask, turning to properly look at the stranger, and taken aback by how beautiful his green eyes are.
โ€œWeโ€™re kinda mortal enemies.โ€ He winces.
โ€œYouโ€™re Mason Cooper?โ€ I frown, looking him up and down. I hadnโ€™t recognized him without a helmet on.
โ€œYep! Greendaleโ€™s version of Oliver Kingsley. But a better quarterback and better looking.โ€
โ€œDo you also cheat on your girlfriend?โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not cheating if you donโ€™t have a girlfriend.โ€
โ€œNo, just sus.โ€
He shrugs.
โ€œWow, so we REALLY shouldnโ€™t be talking,โ€ I say. โ€œIt would drive Oliver insane.โ€
โ€œI mean, isnโ€™t that a bonus? Youโ€™re getting revenge by talking to the guy who beat your exโ€™s ass last year.โ€
โ€œThe fight was a tie,โ€ I say, defending Olly out of habit.
Mason snorts. โ€œOh please! Your whole school hates my guts because he missed three games after I kicked his ass.โ€
โ€œOkay, maybe you won. And maybe Iโ€™m glad now,โ€ I say with a little smile.
I look down at my feet. โ€œYou probably donโ€™t want to hear about all my personal problems,โ€ I mumble.
โ€œAre you kidding? I love hearing how much Oliver messed up,โ€ Mason chuckles. โ€œAnd I need a distraction.โ€
โ€œWhat do you need a distraction from?โ€ I ask before I can stop myself.
โ€œLife.โ€ He sighs.
I raise an eyebrow. What could that mean?
โ€œYouโ€™re Lily, right? The cheerleader?โ€ he asks, changing the subject.
โ€œI am.โ€ Though now Iโ€™m thinking about quitting the team when school starts.
โ€œI hate it. I only joined because Leah... Oh god, being on the same team as Leahโ€”I canโ€™t handle that. Iโ€™ll want to punch her in the face every chance I get,โ€ I groan, and Mason laughs.
โ€œItโ€™s not funny,โ€ I snap.
โ€œItโ€™s not,โ€ he agrees quickly. โ€œIโ€™m laughing because I thought you were quiet.โ€
I purse my lips together and quirk my head to the side.
โ€œIโ€™ve seen you at games before. You never really talked with the others,โ€ he explains.
โ€œBecause they all suck!โ€ I exclaim, and he laughs again and agrees.
โ€œHow about you? Want to spill some secrets or have a full-on emotional breakdown in front of me to make me feel better?โ€ I ask.
โ€œMaybe next time.โ€ He winks.
โ€œNext time?โ€ My eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
โ€œI have to go. But you can text me if you want to talk,โ€ he says, handing me a black iPhone.
I look at the phone then back at him. Is he serious?
โ€œYouโ€™re supposed to put your number in,โ€ he says, and I roll my eyes, punching my number in.
โ€œThanks for listening,โ€ I whisper as I hand it back to him.
โ€œAnytime, princess.โ€ He smiles sadly, kicking a rock with his sneaker as he walks away.
Iโ€™m still watching him go when my phone vibrates. Itโ€™s a message from him.
555-465-9987
Hi, itโ€™s me, your naked therapist.
I laugh and save his contact as M. I donโ€™t even want the name Mason Cooper in my phone.
When I get home that night, I kick off my shoes and flop down onto the sofa.
I should probably call Ava. Sheโ€™s my best friend and I love her, but sheโ€™s also so extra and I canโ€™t deal with her right now.
I think about calling my parents, but whatโ€™s the point? They wonโ€™t answer.
It feels like theyโ€™re away on business more than theyโ€™re home nowadays.
I guess I fell asleep, because Iโ€™m woken up by my phone ringing. The time on the screen says twelve oโ€™clock.
โ€œHello?โ€ I answer, my voice heavy with sleep.
โ€œDid I wake you?โ€ A male voice comes through.
I pull back my phone to see โ€œMโ€ on the screen. โ€œMason?โ€ I ask, sitting up on the sofa.
โ€œLook, Iโ€™m sorry. Go back to sleep,โ€ his voice comes out soft yet strained.
โ€œDo you want to come over and eat pizza?โ€ I offer, remembering we have one in the freezer.
Thereโ€™s a pause, and I check to make sure he hasnโ€™t hung up again.
โ€œWhat kind?โ€ he finally replies.
โ€œPepperoni.โ€
โ€œText me your address.โ€
I quickly pull my phone away from my ear and send a text to him.
โ€œIโ€™ll be there soon, princess,โ€ he says almost immediately after I hit send.
โ€œSee you soon,โ€ I whisper as I throw the frozen pizza in the oven.
Holy shit. What the hell am I doing? Why am I inviting Mason Cooper over to my house? If Harry or anyone from school finds out, my life will be made a living hell.
My internal freak-out doesnโ€™t last long as Mason texts to say heโ€™s outside.
I open the front door and find him standing on my porch dressed in a black hoodie and basketball shorts.
He pushes back the hood and his curls fall onto his forehead, above his electric green eyes.
How is he making the most casual outfit possible look so hot?
โ€œThat was fast,โ€ I say faintly.
โ€œI live two streets over.โ€ He half-smiles as I open the door wider for him to come inside.
โ€œSoooโ€ฆโ€ I draw out as we sit next to each other at the counter, the pepperoni pizza between us.
โ€œYou feeling any better?โ€ he asks, grabbing a slice.
โ€œYeah,โ€ I answer honestly. Crying and sleep seemed to help.
โ€œIโ€™m more angry than sad now,โ€ I add, taking a bite of my slice.
โ€œYou seemed pretty mad before.โ€ He smiles down at me.
He has a nice smile, but it doesnโ€™t reach his beautiful eyes.
โ€œYou seemedโ€ฆsad,โ€ I say. โ€œIs there something you want to talk about?โ€
โ€œIโ€™d rather just be distracted.โ€ He sighs. He looks tired, and not just because itโ€™s after midnight.
โ€œDo you want to go swimming?โ€ I ask, standing up as I finish my slice of pizza. โ€œI have a pool.โ€
โ€œI didnโ€™t bring swim trunks. Though you already know thatโ€™s not a problem for me,โ€ he says with a grin.
โ€œNo, I guess itโ€™s notโ€ฆโ€ I say, biting my lip nervously.
โ€œSo how about it, Princess?โ€
โ€œUmโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never been skinny-dipping,โ€ I blurt, biting my lip nervously.
โ€œYou havenโ€™t?โ€ He gapes at me.
โ€œAll my friends have, but Olly always said it would make me seem like a slut,โ€ I mumble, feeling myself blush.
โ€œHeโ€™s an idiot.โ€ Mason snorts, rolling his eyes. โ€œCome on then, princess.โ€ He smiles, standing up.
โ€œA-are you serious?โ€ I ask, looking at him with wide eyes.
โ€œI promise I wonโ€™t look.โ€ He chuckles. โ€œLetโ€™s live a little.โ€
Once weโ€™re outside standing at the edge of the pool, my nerves nearly get the better of me.
โ€œYou really wonโ€™t look?โ€
โ€œI made a promise, didnโ€™t I?โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re not going to tell anyone, are you?โ€ I add, turning my head to look at him.
โ€œWhat, say I went skinny-dipping with someone from Ridgewood? Thatโ€™d be social suicide, and I actually want to enjoy my senior year.โ€
I take a deep breath, closing my eyes as I reach for the zipper on the back of my dress.
I struggle to reach it and huff. Iโ€™m about to just pull it over my head, but instead I feel Masonโ€™s fingers brush my bare skin softly, then he slowly unzips my dress.
I let it drop to the ground and pool at my feet. Masonโ€™s hands touch the middle of my back, giving me goosebumps, then I realize heโ€™s undoing my barely-there strapless bra.
Once my bra has joined my dress, I take another deep breath and slide my panties off.
I look to my left to be greeted by Masonโ€™s bare, chiseled chest. And those absโ€ฆ What kind of killer workout routine does he have?
He must feel my eyes on him, because he chuckles. โ€œYouโ€™re looking.โ€
My eyes shoot back up to his face as my own turns red as a tomato. โ€œI never promised not to.โ€
โ€œTouchรฉ.โ€ True to his word, his eyes are focused on the pool in front of us, but his smile finally looks real.
โ€œReady, princess?โ€ he asks.
โ€œReady,โ€ I say and grab his hand.
โ€œThree, two, one,โ€ he counts down quietly before we jump into the cool water.
