Her Blood Silence
The blood was dry now. That was what bothered me the most. I mused about my childhood as I sat in the kitchen chair, staring at the counter.
I remembered my tenth birthday. The sound of my mother’s singing echoing off the walls. I watched her frost the cake for hours, only to have my brother smash my face into the cake after singing “Happy Birthday.”
I was angry, remembering I chased him, screaming bloody murder.
Pain pulled at my skin when I shifted, stiff and cracking, the sound grating on my ears, like I’d been dipped in something and left to harden. My shirt clung to my ribs where it had soaked through hours ago, dark and sticky…disgusting. I sighed as I watched the clock—not long now.
It wasn’t time for dinner yet. I needed to shower. I pondered the time it would take to wash everything away before he got home… Not enough.
I looked down at the fabric of my shirt, heavy, littered with holes, and browned at the edges, almost black in certain places. I stood, ignoring the scream of pain in my body. I didn’t have time to shower, but I could try to clean up a little before he got here. Not that it would help much.
I dragged a damp cloth across my arms, my stomach, and my neck, but all it did was smear everything wider, turn my skin raw and pink. Great.
I stopped trying. I sat back on the kitchen chair and stared down at myself like I was looking at something spoiled.
My thighs were layered in bruises…deep-purple bleeding into yellow and green, swollen in some places, sunken in others. Finger-shaped marks ringed my upper arms, too deliberate to be accidental. My knees were scabbed and split, one still leaking faintly.
There was a cut along my side that burned every time I breathed, open and angry, already deciding how ugly it wanted to become. I would need to clean it and wrap it before any infection set in.
My back ached constantly. I didn’t need to see it to know what it looked like…thick, raised scars stacked over older ones, skin warped and uneven like it had forgotten how to heal right. The marks of a monster.
Some spots itched. Some throbbed. Some were numb.
I hated this body. I hated the way my skin hung loose over bone, the way my stomach caved inward, and the way my chest barely moved when I breathed. I hated the smell of dried blood clinging to me, metallic and sour, like it had soaked into my pores… I looked disgusting.
The house grew deathly still, as if it had forgotten how to breathe. I stiffened, knowing what that meant. The front door opened.
The sound landed heavy in my chest… Charles was home.
His footsteps moved through the house with purpose, each one deliberate, like he’d already decided what he was going to do. My heart started to race, too fast, too loud. My body tightened even more, every muscle bracing.
He was going to hurt me. He’d already decided, and there was nothing I could do but brace for it and pray that if he couldn’t stop, it was quick. I stood too quickly, and the room tilted, dizziness washing over me in a thick wave.
I caught myself on the wall, breathing shallow, waiting.
“Haven,” he called. “Get out here.”
I stepped into the hallway. His eyes landed on me—and dragged. Slow. Assessing. Taking inventory.
His mouth twisted, not with concern, but disgust.
“What the hell is this?” he snapped, anger folding into his tone. “I told you to clean yourself up.” Shame crawled hot and heavy up my spine.
I curled inward without meaning to, shoulders folding, as I tried to make myself smaller.
“You’re bleeding all over my house,” he continued, irritation sharpening his voice. “You look like an animal.” He turned toward the kitchen, and I could hear the drawer slide open.
Metal shifted against metal, causing my pulse to roar in my ears.
“I don’t tolerate messes,” he said calmly. “Especially not from you.” He came back holding the knife. Not raised. Not rushed.
He stepped closer, eyes cold, already choosing where to start. My stomach twisted painfully as dread pooled with a daunting feeling. I knew this look.
He’d only worn it twice, and both times, he’d almost killed me. Doctor Stevenson would be by my bed in the morning. His voice sent slimy shivers down my spine.
His exams always came at a price, and it was one I hated paying. He held no sympathy; it didn’t matter how injured I was. I prayed hard, Please, no.
“You think you can walk around like this?” he asked. “Covered in blood?” He grabbed my arm, fingers digging straight into a bruise. Pain bloomed sharp and immediate, burning the nerves. I always envied the people who couldn’t feel pain…more so now.
“Maybe I need to remind you how to behave.”
The doorbell rang. Sharp. Loud. Wrong. Charles froze. So did I.
“Haven?” a voice called through the door. “It’s me.”
Paul.
The sound of my brother’s voice detonated inside me. Panic flooded my body so fast it was dizzying, racing down my spine, curling into my toes until they ached. My instincts screamed at me to move.
I ripped free and bolted for the door. Running was dangerous. Running and getting caught meant the basement… That godforsaken place flashed in my mind, harrowing, a monster within itself. If this house was alive, it was the darkest part. I swear, when the house was quiet, I could hear my old screams inside the walls.
I didn’t stop, I couldn’t, not now. My fingers brushed the doorknob. Charles was on me instantly. His arm locked around my chest, crushing my back against him. The knife flashed up, cold and real as it pressed beneath my chin. My body went completely still, terror snapping me into place. The pressure proved one move and I’d be dead.
“Don’t,” he murmured into my ear. “You ruin this, and I’ll finish it.” The door opened and Paul stood there. For half a second, his face was familiar. Easy. Expectant. Then his eyes went to Charles, to the knife, and finally they landed on me. And everything changed at once.
His face drained of color. His breath left him in a sharp, broken sound. “Haven…” His voice cracked. “Charles?” he said next—disbelief bled into horror. “What the hell are you doing?”
Charles tightened his hold and Paul’s posture shifted immediately. It was subtle, but unmistakable—shoulders square, feet planted, one hand lifted slowly, palm out. The other moved to his hip, restrained, controlled. He drew his gun slowly, pointing it at Charles, his face set, angry.
“Step away from her,” Paul said. His voice was flat now. Deadly calm. “Remove the knife from her neck.”
“This is a family matter,” Charles snapped. “You don’t belong here.”
Paul didn’t look at him. He looked at me. Really looked. At the bruises layered over my skin. At the dried blood. At the way my eyes didn’t focus right, the way I wasn’t fighting, wasn’t crying—just empty. Something in him fractured.
“Haven,” he said quietly, voice shaking just barely before he forced it steady. “I see you. You’re doing great. Just stay calm.”
“She doesn’t care what you have to say.” Charles’s tone was dark, mocking. It took everything I had not to wince when he tightened his grip on my arm. My hands were still placed on his forearm, begging silently. Please.
Paul’s jaw clenched hard. “Charles,” he said, fury threaded through the calm. “I know exactly who you are. You don’t want to do this.”
I knew what he was doing—he was trying to empathize with him. I felt bad for him. You can’t empathize with a psychopath.
“Charles, you’re committing felony assault with a deadly weapon. Drop the knife. Now.”
Charles laughed, sharp and ugly. “You think you can tell me how to discipline my kid?” The word sounded foreign coming from his mouth. My kid.
Paul’s breathing turned shallow for one dangerous second. “This is wrong,” he said. “And if you don’t let her go, this ends very badly for you.”
The knife pressed harder. My pulse jumped wildly beneath it. One move and it was over.
“Please—” I could hear the venom in Charles’s voice.
“Charles—I will not tell you again. Drop the weapon.” Paul shoved his gun forward and took a half step closer. The game of chicken was Charles’s favorite—who would falter first. Complete domination and submission.
