Will their connection withstand the turbulence of past secrets and present challenges?

Chapter One

Book 2: Still Holding On

TAG

Thereโ€™s something about farm work I love. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s being out with the animals or being in the heat using practically every muscle in my body or the nice cold beer I treat myself to when I get home.
Iโ€™m not sure which of the three it is, but itโ€™s probably the beer.
โ€œTag, are you still out here?โ€ my granny calls out through the barn as I brush my favorite horse, Sid.
โ€œIn here,โ€ I call back.
โ€œWhat on Godโ€™s green earth have you been doing all day?โ€ she asks, giving Sid a scratch behind his ears. โ€œYou didnโ€™t even come in for lunch.โ€ She tuts, clicking her tongue at me.
โ€œI went for a ride once I finished.โ€ I shrug.
โ€œWell, you better go wash up and come eat your dinner,โ€ she orders.
โ€œThereโ€™s no rush,โ€ I tell her as she tries to take the brush out of my hand.
โ€œI thought you were going out with Bugs and James?โ€ Granny frowns.
โ€œOh shit!โ€ I exclaim, remembering that I was meant to meet the boys at the bar.
โ€œYou go inside. Iโ€™ll deal with this.โ€ She laughs, shooing me off.
โ€œYouโ€™re the best. I love you,โ€ I tell her, kissing the top of her head before sprinting toward Grannyโ€™s house.
My dinner is sitting on the table, which I inhale as fast as I can before jumping into the shower.
I change into a clean white T-shirt and chuck a red flannel over top with some jeans before running down the stairs back into the kitchen where Granny is putting away some leftovers.
โ€œDo you want me to stay tonight?โ€ I ask. Iโ€™ve always lived with her and Pappy, but when I got married, we moved out to a shitty-ass townhouse.
After we split, well, she left, and I got myself a small one-bedroom place just down the road from Granny.
Half the time I end up staying here, though. Either because Iโ€™m tired and canโ€™t be assed driving home or because Granny is lonely. If Pappy was still alive, I wouldnโ€™t stay as often.
Actually, nothing probably wouldโ€™ve changed.
โ€œAnd deal with your drunk behind at some ungodly hour? No thanks,โ€ she teases.
โ€œIโ€™ll come pick you up for breakfast, then,โ€ I tell her.
โ€œLetโ€™s do dinner, Iโ€™m going out with the ladies for lunch.โ€ She shakes her head. โ€œBe safe, baby.โ€ She smiles and kisses my cheek.
โ€œAlways am.โ€ I wink before grabbing my truck keys and running outside.
I love my truck. Itโ€™s only five years old, black, sleek, shining. Runs like a fucking dream.
I drive into town and pull up outside Jamesโ€™s bar, Helioโ€™s, grab my old, trusted cowboy hat, and head inside.
The bar is packed as usual for a Friday night. I scan the familiar faces before spotting Bugs and James sitting at the bar.
โ€œFinally! Where the hell have you been?โ€ James exclaims as I slide onto the empty stool next to Bugs.
โ€œWent for a ride after work.โ€ I shrug, looking for Will behind the bar. I see him and Young Mary serving beers as fast as they can.
But what really catches my eye is the new girl standing next to Will. Sheโ€™s a little blonde with a smokinโ€™ body.
Sheโ€™s watching intently everything Will is doing and looks like sheโ€™s listening to whatever shit heโ€™s saying.
โ€œWhoโ€™s the new girl?โ€ I ask, jutting my chin toward her.
โ€œHer nameโ€™s Amelia. Sheโ€™s from New York. A real city girl, also off-limits,โ€ James tells me pointedly.
I roll my eyes at him, itโ€™s not like Iโ€™ve been with a woman since Susie left anyway, which everyone in this fucking town knows.
โ€œWill!โ€ James yells, gaining his attention. He looks over at us and smiles, then says something to Amelia before heading toward us.
โ€œHey, man, howโ€™s Sissy?โ€ Will asks as he grabs three beers and hands them to Amelia, who struggles to pop the caps off.
โ€œSheโ€™s great. Sheโ€™s pregnant again.โ€ I canโ€™t help the smile that spreads across my face at the thought of my cousin.
โ€œShit, really? Thatโ€™s what number four?โ€ Bugs whistles.
โ€œYup. Number four,โ€ I confirm with a big smile.
โ€œI miss Sissy.โ€ Will sighs and takes the bottles off the new girl and opens them easily.
โ€œTell her next time sheโ€™s in town I want to finally meet this fiancรฉ of hers. Iโ€™m starting to think heโ€™s not real.โ€ He laughs, grabbing a bottle of whiskey and holding it up.
โ€œOh, heโ€™s real. The things Iโ€™d do to that man,โ€ Mary comments, walking past with a tray of dirty glasses.
โ€œOne or two?โ€ Will asks, fake gagging at Mary.
โ€œTwo,โ€ we all answer at the same time.
โ€œThese boys are simple, beer and whiskey. Offer either and youโ€™ll be fine,โ€ Will tells Amelia before serving the guy next to us.
โ€œHeard from your wife lately?โ€ Bugs asks as I lift my first shot glass to my lips.
โ€œNo,โ€ I answer as James punches him in the arm.
โ€œIsnโ€™t it your anniversary today?โ€ he continues. Bugs is a great guy, but heโ€™s as thick as pig shit sometimes.
โ€œThanks for reminding me,โ€ I mutter, slamming both of my shots back-to-back, almost tempted to grab his too.
I hadnโ€™t actually forgotten it was my and Susieโ€™s six-year anniversary, thatโ€™s why I went for a ride and was feeling okay that we hadnโ€™t seen each other for three years. But, of course, Bugs has to put his foot in it.
โ€œWill! Another round!โ€ James yells, slamming his hand on the bar. โ€œYou are not stepping foot out of this bar until you canโ€™t walk straight,โ€ he tells me, shaking my shoulders.
โ€œAmelia, stay here. Weโ€™re getting our man nice and drunk; heโ€™s not allowed to leave until he canโ€™t stand,โ€ he tells Will and Amelia, who looks like a deer in headlights.
โ€œA-are you sure?โ€ she stutters out.
โ€œHell yeah, I am!โ€ he answers happily.
โ€œBeer?โ€ she asks, grabbing three more bottles, which she struggles to open yet again.
โ€œI can only have one more. Iโ€™ve got work in the morning,โ€ Bugs yells over the music.
โ€œPussy!โ€ James laughs, telling Amelia to pour more shots.
Bugs stays for another hour drinking coke before he leaves. Two hours after heโ€™s gone, Iโ€™m drunk as fuck.
โ€œI canโ€™t drink anymore.โ€ I groan as Amelia pushes another shot glass and beer toward me.
โ€œCan you walk straight?โ€ she asks with a small smile on her lips.
โ€œNo.โ€ I shake my head.
โ€œCan you stand?โ€ she asks, leaning her elbows on the bar.
โ€œNo,โ€ I repeat.
โ€œWalk to the bathroom and back and Iโ€™ll be the judge of that,โ€ she challenges, straightening up.
โ€œYouโ€™re bossy,โ€ I tell her.
โ€œHey, Iโ€™m just following bossโ€™s orders,โ€ she replies, holding her hands up.
โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t want me to get fired on my first day, would you?โ€ she asks, sticking her bottom lip out the slightest bit, and for the first time in six years, my dick twitches at someone thatโ€™s not Susie.
โ€œFine.โ€ I groan, pushing myself up, confused as to why Iโ€™d start feeling horny now. I mean, the girlโ€™s hot, but Iโ€™ve seen plenty of hot women since.
I make my way to the bathroom, making sure to make it look like I stumble, then I can stop drinking.
After using the toilet, I head back to the bar, thinking about the last time I was this drunk. It was probably a week before my wedding.
Me and Susie went to some stupid bed-and-breakfast she wanted to visit, but we were both bored out of our minds and drank everything we could find.
I smile at the memory as I sit back on my barstool.
โ€œSee. Iโ€™m drunk. Can hardly stand.โ€ I smile widely at Amelia who has her eyebrows raised.
โ€œYou walked back perfectly fine,โ€ she says, and I throw my head back.
I was so wrapped up in my memories of Susie I forgot to stumble back.
โ€œJust pretend to sip this beer.โ€ She winks, sliding me an already open beer. I smile thankfully at her, making a blush appear on her pale cheeks.
โ€œShots!โ€ James demands twenty minutes later.
โ€œWhere were you?โ€ I ask with a smirk, knowing exactly where he was.
โ€œJust takinโ€™ care of business.โ€ He winks, shoving the shot glass in my hand.
โ€œWhatโ€™s the time?โ€ I groan, resting my head on the bar what feels like ten hours later.
โ€œThree,โ€ Will answers.
โ€œIโ€™ll just finish up and take you lot home,โ€ he says, making a girl laugh.
I lift my head slightly and see James in the same position as me, except heโ€™s sleeping.
โ€œWake up, asshole,โ€ I mutter, trying to punch his arm but miss by a mile.
โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you this drunk since Bobโ€™s funeral.โ€ Will chuckles, lifting Jamesโ€™s head, wiping underneath it and dropping it back down not so gently.
โ€œI donโ€™t think I have been this drunk before,โ€ I mutter, pushing my hat back so I can put my forehead on the cool bar.
โ€œHowโ€™s Missy?โ€ he asks as he continues cleaning up.
โ€œShe wants to castrate Tanner.โ€ I laugh, lifting my head, almost falling out of my seat in surprise when the blonde from earlier stands in front of me.
Our eyes lock, and I notice how beautiful her eyes are. Theyโ€™re the most beautiful shade of blue; theyโ€™re remarkable.
โ€œIโ€™m surprised she hasnโ€™t. That woman wants a wedding,โ€ Will answers.
โ€œTanner is Sissyโ€™s fiancรฉ; they keep having babies and postponing their wedding,โ€ he explains, standing next to Amelia, breaking our eye contact.
โ€œWhoโ€™s Sissy?โ€ she asks, frowning slightly.
โ€œHis cousin. Missy is his granny.โ€
โ€œThey donโ€™t live here,โ€ I add before putting my head back down.
โ€œCome on. Iโ€™ll take you home,โ€ Will says, tapping the back of my head.
โ€œMy truck.โ€ I groan, not wanting to have to walk into town in the morning to pick it up.
โ€œCan you drive?โ€ he asks.
โ€œIโ€™m fucking wasted, of course I canโ€™t.โ€ I frown, looking at him only to realize heโ€™s talking to Amelia.
โ€œSheโ€™ll follow us in your truck, and Iโ€™ll take her home.โ€ He smirks, knowing I donโ€™t let anyone drive my truck and Iโ€™ll have to walk in the morning.
โ€œFine.โ€ I yawn, chucking my keys onto the bar and trying to stand but stumble.
โ€œJust wait there. Iโ€™ll move him first.โ€ Will sighs before yanking James to his feet and wrapping his arm around his neck.
โ€œI can help,โ€ Amelia offers and Will snorts.
โ€œI got this,โ€ I tell them both, managing to get to my feet, using my hands for balance.
โ€œSee?โ€ I give them a toothy grin once Iโ€™m on my feet.
โ€œSuch great skill!โ€ Amelia gasps sarcastically, making me burst out laughing.
I manage to stumble out of the bar to my truck without actually falling on my face.
โ€œSee you at yours,โ€ Will calls out, climbing into his truck.
โ€œWhich one is yours?โ€ Amelia asks, nodding to the multiple trucks and cars left in the lot. โ€œWait, let me guess! The red one?โ€ She smiles, pointing at an old shitbox.
โ€œHell no!โ€ I pull a face and point to mine.
โ€œWhoa, this is nice,โ€ she whispers as we climb in.
โ€œPlease donโ€™t crash,โ€ I say to her with pleading eyes.
โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€ She smiles and revs the engine, and I start giving her directions.
I mustโ€™ve fallen asleep on the drive because the next thing I know, Amelia is gently shaking my shoulder. I look around and see weโ€™re pulled over on the side of the road.
โ€œI need to know where to go,โ€ she says, nervously biting her lip. I look around and see weโ€™re closer to Grannyโ€™s house than mine; she mustโ€™ve turned left instead of right.
โ€œKeep going straight. Itโ€™s the big house just up there.โ€ I yawn, blinking a few times trying to wake up properly.
โ€œYou live here?โ€ she asks in amazement as she pulls up next to Grannyโ€™s car.
โ€œItโ€™s Grannyโ€™s. I live that way,โ€ I tell her, pointing in the direction we just came from.
โ€œI w-went the wrong way?โ€ she stutters, biting her lip, making me audibly groan.
Why the hell am I suddenly so horny? Must be the alcohol.
โ€œShouldโ€™ve turned right.โ€ I shrug.
โ€œIโ€™m really sorry,โ€ she whispers, looking down at her hands.
โ€œNot a big deal,โ€ I tell her, neither of us moving.
โ€œAre you going inside?โ€ she asks, clearing her throat and lifting her head. Her eyes look wet.
โ€œAre you crying?โ€ I ask and automatically put my hand on her cheek, making her flinch.
โ€œSorry,โ€ I mutter, dropping my hand. โ€œGrannyโ€™s going to kill me if I wake her up.โ€ I groan, leaning my head back.
โ€œAre you scared of your granny?โ€ she asks with a smirk.
โ€œYou obviously havenโ€™t met my granny yet.โ€ I laugh.
โ€œI can take you home. I donโ€™t mind,โ€ she offers.
โ€œNaw, itโ€™s fine. Come on, weโ€™ll call Will to come here,โ€ I tell her, opening the door and practically falling out.
โ€œLet me help you.โ€ She laughs, coming around and wrapping my arm around her shoulders and her arm around my waist.
I almost laugh at the thought of this tiny woman carrying me up the stairs. I have at least a hundred pounds on her, then thereโ€™s the height difference. Iโ€™m six foot three; sheโ€™d be around five foot three.
I keep my weight off her as we walk toward the house, letting her think sheโ€™s helping but also because her arm feels so right around me.
โ€œWhat key is it?โ€ she asks after we stumble up the porch steps. I look at the keys in her hand for a moment before twisting the handle, and the door opens, surprising her.
โ€œThatโ€™s not safe, you know,โ€ she warns as we walk into the dark living room.
โ€œTag, is that you?โ€ Granny calls out from her downstairs bedroom before the light flicks on.
โ€œHi, Granny.โ€ I smile shyly at her.
โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ she asks, folding her arms and looking at me and Amelia.
โ€œJames and Amelia got me drunk,โ€ I tattle, pointing at the top of her head. โ€œVery drunk.โ€ Granny nods before looking at Amelia.
โ€œAmelia, Iโ€™m assuming?โ€ she asks, making her drop her arms off me and look scared shitless.
โ€œYes, I just started at Helioโ€™s and came to drop off.โ€ She pauses, looking at me.
โ€œYou donโ€™t know my name.โ€ I burst out laughing, clutching my stomach as I fall onto the sofa.
โ€œIโ€™ll go outside and call Will to pick me up,โ€ she says, biting her lip, making my laughter instantly stop.
โ€œHowโ€™d you get here?โ€ Granny asks as I try to kick off my boots, making her roll her eyes and pull them off for me.
โ€œI drove, umโ€”โ€
โ€œLuke,โ€ I offer, making Granny freeze.
โ€œLukeโ€™s truck. I took a wrong turn and ended up here,โ€ she says, my name sounding so good coming from her mouth.
โ€œHe probably told you the wrong way.โ€ Granny snorts. โ€œIโ€™ll call Will. Do you want a cup of tea while you wait?โ€ she asks, making me smile at how awesome my granny is.
โ€œAre you sure? I donโ€™t want to be a bother.โ€
โ€œShe didnโ€™t crash my truck,โ€ I mumble as a blanket falls on top of me. โ€œHey, Granny?โ€ I ask, opening one eye.
โ€œYes, baby?โ€ she answers.
โ€œI love you,โ€ I mumble, closing my eyes.
โ€œI love you too, sweetheart,โ€ she replies, kissing my forehead as I drift off to sleep.
