Chapter 1
KAT
My alarm beeps, waking me up. I groan loudly, the dull ache in my stomach a clear warning I’m about to start my period. Freaking timing! I’d hoped it would be at least a couple more days before it came on, since I am starting my new job today.
It’s been said that few people get to work at this place, and I am extremely lucky to get the job helping with the research. After finishing my university degree in science and biology, I’ve landed a position at the largest scientific research company in the country, and one that is extremely hard to get into.
I turned twenty-one just last week; I’m the youngest person to get this opportunity that I know of, and it’s rare for women to be in my field too.
Also, I was told to arrive at 10 a.m. I thought that was a late start, but the owner of the company insisted that this was normal for the facility. All I can say is, I am happy beyond words.
I make the forty-five-minute drive in my little car—a half hour out of the city and another fifteen minutes down a side road to the research center.
I have no clue what I will do when I get there. I was only told that it had something to do with finding a cure. A cure for what? I don’t know, except that it’s something to do with animals and working different strains together. I guess I’ll find out more soon.
There are only a few cars parked out front when I arrive, which is strange for the size of the research center. It is a huge glass building with a beautiful, scenic forest behind it. That makes me feel better about being here, as it is far out and pretty secluded. But it’s what you would expect from a research facility.
I park my car and get out, grabbing my bag with all my extra period products in it.
I walk up to the reception desk, where there is a cute young guy with bright-blue hair.
“Hi there, I’m starting work here today. Kat Ellington.”
Without lifting his head to look at me, he points to a set of white lounge chairs. “Please wait over there.”
Oh, great… White…
I feel really uncomfortable now.
As I sit and wait, a couple of guys walk by in lab coats. I can’t help but stare at them. They have the most amazing eyes I have ever seen—vivid blue and green. They just stare back at me. A voice next to me breaks the spell.
“You must excuse them. They are not used to seeing women here.” The blue-haired guy is at my side; I didn’t even notice him move from the reception desk.
“Oh, really? So there aren’t many women working here, then?”
“You must have impressed the boss if you are working here,” he says, not answering my question.
Jason is the boss of the company and hired me after several more mature, qualified students came for the same position. I honestly thought I wouldn’t get the job.
“Thank you, I guess.”
“Well, he will be down in a minute.”
“Okay, thanks,” I mutter as I look back around for the two guys in coats from before. They are gone.
When I turn back to say something to the reception guy, he is already back at his desk. Weird. He must have moved so quickly and quietly that I didn’t notice him leave. I mean, he was right there a second ago. I shake it off and sit, waiting.
“Good morning, Kat.” Jason finally appears and holds out his hand.
“Oh, good morning, sir.” I greet him with a warm smile and shake his hand.
“Please follow me.” With no time to spare, he turns and starts walking.
I have to hurry to keep up with him as we make our way through a couple of laboratories which are segregated off. I can see workers behind the glass. I don’t notice them moving, but I feel their eyes following me as I walk past. Weird as hell.
And as if he is reading my mind, Jason pauses. “Don’t worry about them. They won’t bite…much.”
He leads me through to another room, where there are several workers all in white lab coats, then takes me to the workstation. “Right, this is where you will work. I’ll assign Ryan and Bambi to help you out to start with.”
Two guys now stand right behind me—two very sexy-looking guys. I can feel heat creeping up my body as they stand so close to me. My mind is going a hundred miles an hour.
Fuck…what would it feel like sandwiched between them? My cheeks heat.
“Sorry, but why are you called Bambi?”
“Because when he started out here, he was a little shaky, and when you see him run, well, he runs like Bambi,” the man called Ryan whispers, his voice husky and sending shudders of delight through me.
Oh my god!
“No, I do not.” Bambi’s beautiful blue eyes look indignant.
“He still gets pissed because we call him Bambi.” Ryan’s voice is much deeper, and his alluring amber eyes draw me in.
I struggle to hold his gaze without feeling that he is about to pounce on me or something.
“He’s also the youngest on our team.” Jason’s voice is quick to bring me back to my senses. “That over there is Ruffalo. Try to stay out of his way.”
Okay, so Ruffalo gives me a weird look, and then I’m sure he growls or something. A warning? What is going on?
“And that’s James, Dallas, and Brandon.”
All three of them grunt at me in unison, and their eyes linger on me. I feel very self-conscious.
“I’ll leave you in the hands of Ryan here. He’ll show you what you will be doing.” With that, Jason walks off.
When Jason mentions he is going to leave me in Ryan’s capable hands, I’m sure Ryan’s eyes flash, changing color, and his nose twitches.
Maybe I am just imagining things, as I feel super sensitive with all these guys around me.
The intensity of their focus sends a jolt of exhilaration through me, a thrilling sense of something wild and untamed happening. Warmth spreads through me, my cheeks glowing as unimaginable fantasies dance in my head.
Wow, I wish they would stop staring at me. I’m afraid they can tell what I’m thinking.
“Here, let me take that from you.” Ryan leans over, taking my bag and placing it down under the table. As he comes back up, I’m sure he sniffs me.
“S-so you’re meant to show me what to do?” I stutter and become flustered.
Ryan looks at me and licks his lips as a sort of moan comes out of his mouth.
“I can smell her from here.” A voice from across the room makes me blush, as I wonder if I do smell.
The one called Dallas makes a funny growling noise.
Ruffalo, who they warned me about staying away from, grunts. “Fucking animals.”
“Sorry about them. It’s been a while since they’ve been near a female coming into heat.” Bambi sounds so sweet and innocent when he talks, but—what?
“Sorry, what did you say?”
“Shut it,” a voice from the back of the room tells Bambi. This is just getting stranger by the minute.
Ryan brings my attention back to the table. “Right, well, I suppose I’d better show you what you’re to do here.”
“C-can I go use the bathroom first, please?” I feel like I’m going to pass out from the heat.
“Here, I’ll show you where it is,” Bambi offers.
I thank him, and then I pick up my bag. A unison of growling comes from them, but when I look at them, they are all busy. With a puzzled look, I follow the guy they call Bambi to the bathroom. It’s unisex, probably since there aren’t many women here, as I’ve found out.
Thanking him as he walks off, I go to use the toilet and change myself, washing my hands afterward.
As I am finishing up, the bathroom door opens, and in walks one of the guys that I saw in the reception area when I arrived. I must have forgotten to lock the door. But he doesn’t leave.
“Hello,” I say, keeping it polite. Why is he in the bathroom with me?
He makes a low, animal rumbling sound, then says something strange: “Mm, I can see now. You smell nice.”
“Oh, right? Er, thanks, I guess.” Picking up my bag, I turn to go out of the bathroom when the door opens on me, banging my face.
“Ouch!” I say, surprised.
It’s Dallas. “I’m sorry,” he apologizes. “You have a little cut on your cheek. Let me clean it up for you.”
He takes my hand and leads me back to the sink, where he gets a paper towel, wets it from the tap, and gently dabs my face.
His eyes are so close to mine that I see them do something funny, but he is quick to look down. When he is done—the movement is so quick—but I am sure he just licked my face.
“Did…did you just lick me?”
He leans in closer. “Would you like me to bite you instead?” A flash of amber crosses his eyes.
What the hell was that?
Bambi enters, and we all stare at each other. The silence that follows is thick with awkwardness.
“Fucking hell, Dallas.” Bambi looks and sounds pissed off at him. “Let’s get you out of here and back to your workstation.”
He leads me out of the bathroom, apologizing for Dallas’s behavior. I barely hear him. Air fills my lungs as I get back into the laboratory. I realize I had been holding my breath in there.
This is turning out to be a bizarre first day, and I haven’t even started working.
Ryan stands right behind me and starts explaining what I’m supposed to do. I can’t focus. His breath is hot on my neck, as if his lips are almost touching my skin. Goosebumps flood all over my body, especially when his hands guide mine.
It’s like I’m going into some sort of orgasmic ecstasy. I can’t concentrate on what he is showing me, and my eyes flutter and my breathing gets heavier.
It’s almost as if I am the experiment here. I can’t control myself. Ryan’s hands are caressing mine, and his lips are on my neck, kissing.
“Oh god, I think I’m going to cum,” I gasp.
Did I say that?
A clatter of glass smashing on the floor snaps me out of it, and I look around, seeing everyone’s heads down, working away.
Ryan is standing next to me, and he smiles, then continues explaining my job. After he has finished, he leaves me to it, and I sit down, getting to work.
What is happening? Did I just imagine that?
