Chapter 1
Book Three: Love Me
Katherine
I’d spent a month at my dad’s place in New York. I’d missed the flow of the city, the endless crowds of people.
The one thing I didn’t miss was the traffic.
I was in a taxi on the way to the airport. But for the last fifteen minutes, we hadn’t moved an inch.
Dad was reluctant to let me go back, but he knew that I had to go. My life was now in London.
The day I left Xavier, I had cried on the plane. I was hurt, and I needed some space, but at the same time, I wanted to be with him. I was messed up.
Dad knew something had happened, but thankfully he didn’t push for information.
The flight to London would be a long one, but at least I’d have time to think about what to say to Xavier. I hadn’t told him I was coming back today. I wanted it to be a surprise.
And also, I wanted to spend the day following him to see what he was up to when I wasn’t around.
He probably kept tabs on me, so I was allowed.
The taxi finally arrived at the airport after twenty minutes of waiting in traffic. I was still early, so I found a seat in the back and waited for my flight.
During this month away, I’d had time to think. I was hurt and sad but mostly lonely. I had grown attached to Xavier.
I still didn’t know how this could be possible. I mean, he’s in the Mafia. He kills people. Innocent people. And he does it over and over again. But here we are.
I knew I couldn’t change him, but maybe I could tame him.
Now I was going back, but on my terms. I would have the last say now if he wanted me.
No more ownership. If he wanted to be possessive, I would be possessive right back. He’d be getting back an eye for an eye.
I was called out of my thoughts by the boarding call.
I quickly boarded the plane and closed my eyes. A quick nap wouldn’t be bad.
“Miss? Miss, you need to wake up. We have landed.”
The flight attendant drew me out of sleep. The plane had finally reached London, and I had been asleep for the whole flight.
I smiled at her and murmured a small thanks.
She left me and continued waking up the other passengers.
I made my way out of the airport. I called Arabella, so she could pick me up and I could stay the night at her place. I would turn up at Xavier’s place tomorrow.
First, I wanted to see what the man was up to.
By the time I reached Arabella’s apartment, it was already one o’clock. I’d missed the entire morning due to my flight.
Arabella waited for me in front of her apartment building. The moment she saw me, she ran toward me and gave me a big hug.
“Oh my God. I have missed you so much. Phone calls don’t do us justice. How are you?”
“Better, especially now that I’m home.”
She gave me a big smile and helped me bring my bags up to her apartment.
“So, did something happen?” she asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I thought you were happy with your man, and the next thing I hear is you leaving London for almost a month.” I hadn’t told her about the drama that had gone down before I left.
“We just needed some space. We had a huge fight, and distance was the best thing.”
“Oh, okay, so you’re spending the night, and in the morning you’re back at the mansion?”
“Exactly. I’m spending the day out in New York, and then I’m back.”
I had come back on a Friday, so Arabella still had to go back to work. And I had the day free to see what Xavier was up to. And then back to the mansion on the weekend.
“Okay, so I have to run back to work to get everything ready for you to return on Monday. See you at six, yeah?”
“Sure, see you then.”
She gave me a quick hug again and left.
I quickly changed, and when I was about to leave, I remembered.
Where could I find Xavier in this big city? I had no idea where he could be. If he was home, then I was out of luck, same if he was in his office.
I found his number and called him. What was his name again?
“Richard speaking, Mr. Lexington’s assistant.”
“Richard. Hi, it’s Katherine. Katherine Carlone.”
“Mrs. Lexington. Hello. What can I help you with?”
“I’m trying to surprise Xavier, and I don’t have a clue what’s scheduled for him today. Could you please send me his schedule for today?”
“Of course. Anything else?”
“Well, it would be lovely if you don’t mention that I’ve called.”
“Of course, done. Have a lovely day, Mrs. Lexington.”
“Thanks. You too.”
A minute later, after hanging up, my phone pinged again as Richard sent the plan for the day.
Xavier would be in his office till two o’clock for a meeting, and at two-thirty, he was having lunch with someone. Weird, no name.
After that, he was free for the day. How strange. He always worked till four or five.
I left the apartment and called a cab.
“Where to?”
“Rosemary restaurant, please.”
The driver nodded and started the car.
I had changed into a long black bodysuit and a black wool jacket. London was cold, and I wanted to be invisible for the day.
The cab dropped me off, and I made my way up the street.
Just when I rounded the corner to the street, I saw a black car and a figure getting out of it.
Xavier strolled into the restaurant. He looked good.
The first week I was in New York, I could barely get myself out of bed. I missed him.
I made my way slowly up the street to cross the road. I could see into the restaurant from across the street, and I believed that way, there was less chance of him seeing me.
I looked around the restaurant, my eyes scanning the people in there. I could see the inside through the glass. My eyes suddenly stopped. I saw him. He had just sat down and smiled.
But my eyes burned when I saw who he was with and at whom he had just smiled.
