Chapter 1
Iâd witnessed the birthing process enough from growing up in the brothel where my mother had worked to know the queenâs babe would be here soon.
Low, distressed moans and heightened murmurs of encouragement filtered from her royal bedchamber and out into the corridor, echoing down the hall to me like shards of haunting memories that pelted me with visions better left forgotten.
Pain and blood, and too often death, mixed in with the new breath of life; Iâd seen it all. I knew exactly what was happening in that room.
Biting my bottom lip, I stole an inconspicuous glance around the corner and watched the assortment of men gathered outside her door, waiting for news, men who knew nothing about the process transpiring on the other side of that portal.
Among the ignorant, the king sat gruffly in a padded chair that someone had brought for him as he glared at the chamberâs entrance and impatiently rolled his signet ring around his pinkie. Even in the middle of the night, he wore his gold crown embedded with rubies and sapphires and long leather cape with the fur collar.
Ever the pompous ruler.
Tonight, however, he seemed more zealous than he had during the last four times one of his wives had given birth. More restless. More attentive. And infinitely more irritable.
Then again, the last four times a queen had borne him progeny, heâd already had a male heir.
But Murdock was nearly five years in his grave now, and King Torranceâs remaining four issue were all female, thus preventing any of them from assuming the throne after his reign, per Far Shore custom.
Or maybe I should say, his four remaining legitimate children were all female.
A bastard like me didnât count, of course.
âIt doesnât matter if she births a boy or not, you know,â a voice, thick with a royalâs elitist pragmatism, announced directly from my left.
Flinching in surprise because I thought Iâd been alone and hidden rather well, I spun to find one of the kingâs legitimate offspring standing beside me in her nightgown.
âWhatâre you doing out of your bedchamber this late?â I hissed.
Twelve-year-old Sable blinked at me from solemn gray eyes. âMy rooms are just there. And honestly, who could sleep with all that caterwauling going on? Itâs absolutely dreadful.â
âIndeed,â I said dryly. âSuch concern for your dear, sweet stepmother while sheâs suffering through the most intense agony of her life. Youâre the soul of sympathy, you are.â
With an indifferent shrug, Sable crowded closer to me so she could peer around the corner as well and study our father in all his feral glory. âEven if itâs a girl,â she whispered, persistently pursuing the conversation sheâd initiated. âYou still have less of a chance to inherit the crown from him than, well, I do.â
I sniffed and tossed her an affronted glance. âIâve no interest in the crown.â
To which my half sister hummed and raised her eyebrows in obvious disagreement. âThen whatâre you doing up here, skulking around and waiting for the first morsel of news? Certainly, youâre not concerned for our dear stepmotherâs well-being. Kalendria wants you banned from Far Shore entirely. She probably wouldnât balk at the suggestion of you being drawn and quartered.â
Ignoring that unfortunate bit of fact, I shrugged. âWhy wouldnât I be curious about the arrival of a new half sibling?â Bumping my elbow her way, I sent her a teasing wink. âMaybe Iâll actually like this one.â
With a moody pout, Sable poked me right back. âAs if. You adore me and you know it.â
âOnly because you command it, my princess,â I murmured offhandedly, my attention returning to the king when he demanded to know how much longer he was going to be forced to sit there, waiting.
None of his servants were brave enough to tell him he wasnât being forced to do any such thing. He sat there by his own directive to begin with.
The entire scene was sad, really, because of how desperately he wanted a legitimate male heir. It was almost as sad as how desperately I wanted him to claim me as such.
âItâs going to be another girl, anyway,â Sable went on in her matter-of-fact voice.
I glanced her way, lifting my eyebrows. âYou think so? Even though the second soothsayer claimed it would be a boy?â
âYou mean Roloff?â With a roll of her eyes, Sable muttered, âHe only predicted a boy because Father beheaded the first soothsayer for predicting a girl. Honestly, what else could he say?â
âHonestly,â I shot back, rolling my eyes to copy her. âHe couldâve told the truth. The king will behead him anyway if he learns he was lied to.â
âIf he finds him,â Sable argued. âWhich I doubt he will. You and I both know Roloffâs halfway to Lowden, or Donnelly, or maybe even Blair by now.â
I agreed with her wholeheartedly. But it was always fun to egg on Sableâs temper, especially when she was certain she was right, which was pretty much always.
âThey tested him before he could approach the king,â I reminded her. âAnd he was found to be pure of heart, in which case, he couldnât lie.â
âOf course, he could,â Sable insisted, her voice sharpening high enough to make both of us flinch and widen our eyes before glancing worriedly toward the others to make sure we hadnât been heard. When no one reacted, telling us we remained undetected, she turned back to me, hissing, âHe didnât want to die, Farrow. The lie was about self-preservation. Besides, being pure of heart doesnât mean youâre unable toââ
She broke herself off when the first cry of a newborn rent the air.
The two of us exchanged wide-eyed glances.
The child was here.
âWell?â King Torrance barked, surging to his feet as a midwife eased nervously from the queenâs bedchamber and into the corridor. âIs it a male?â
Her answer was too quiet for us to hear, but the kingâs response was not. Throwing his head back, he bellowed in outrage before slapping the quivering midwife across the face and knocking her to the ground. When a dignitary stepped forward and touched his arm to rein him in, the king spun and began thrashing him next.
He cuffed the unfortunate man upside the head until the dignitary cowered to his knees and blanketed his bloody face with his arms. So, the king proceeded to kick him in the ribs with an inhuman barbarity while his other advisors watched wide-eyed, all of them backing into the farthest walls so as not to be next.
Sable whimpered out a sympathetic shudder, so I nudged her toward her bedchamber. âYouâd better return to your room.â She didnât need to witness such cruelty.
âWhat about you?â she hissed, glancing at me with concern. âYouâre not even allowed inside the main keep unless Father invites you, much less the family wing.â
âIâll look after myself.â Prodding her harder, I urged, âGo! Now. Heâs coming this way.â
âHeââ Sable glanced over and peeped out an anxious sound when she spotted the king indeed storming in our direction. Sending me a farewell glance, she darted into safety, silently closing the door just as I slipped into a shadowed nook, out of sight and behind a stone column.
A moment later, Father rounded the corner.
âThis is an outrage,â he blustered as he stalked by where I hid in the dark, the breeze from his passing cape brushing against my bare arm. The dignitaryâs blood freckled his cheeks and began to drip as he roared, âWhere the hell is that lying soothsayer? Bring him to me at once! I want his head on a platter.â
Damn, he was mad.
A bitter grin quirked my lips. Good.
Five daughters now and still no son worthy enough to pass his crown to. Poor, poor king. My heart wept for him. Truly. Or it would if I actually cared about his precious heir. But I didnât. So my smile spread.
I only cared about his misery. Or his recognition.
I knew another girl didnât put me in the line of succession. As Iâd told Sable, I didnât want to rule. And hell, gaining another sister didnât get me any closer to being publicly claimed, either. But there was a petty sort of relish to being the only son of a man who had no male heir when that man refused to acknowledge you as his. I liked seeing him suffer, since heâd made me suffer with his denial, since heâd made my mother suffer by forcing her to stay in that damned brothel where sheâd died, broken and alone, riddled with disease. I ached for his despair and ruin almost as much as I yearned for his approval and respect.
And if I couldnât have one, Iâd settle for the other.
It was all so very complicated and contradictory of me, I know. It probably made me just as evil and wretched as my paterfamilias, but it was the deepest desire of my heart. And I couldnât seem to stop myself from craving his pride or his pain, no matter how hard I tried.
So, until the day he decided I was worthy enough to be called son, I would wish for a whole litter of sisters, just to spite him. May they all be as clever and witty and entertaining as sassy Sable.
Curious to see who else the king was going to blame for having another daughterâfor he certainly wouldnât point a finger at himselfâI furtively followed the trail of dignitaries and guards fretting over him as he stormed into his throne room to rant and pace.
The last time heâd fathered a female, he hadnât even let his queen heal from childbearing before heâd tossed her from the castleâliterally, from a second-story window and straight to her deathâand married another. And that had been while Murdock was still alive. Who knew how long this wife would last.
I had to admit, it wouldnât break my heart to see the youthful Queen Kalendria go. She and I had never gotten on, not since the night sheâd tried to crawl onto my pallet with me in the stables, anyway, and Iâd turned her away without giving her what she wanted.
In hindsight, I probably shouldâve just fucked the shrew as she had ordered, because a woman scornedâespecially when she was the most powerful woman in the kingdomâwas the worst sort of enemy to have. Sable had no clue our stepmother had secretly been trying to have me assassinated for nearly two years now, and only the kingâs interference had saved me.
Watching Father fume, I settled into my usual spying spot behind the largest tapestry on the north wall as he heaved himself onto his throne before he pounded his fist down on its stone armrest.
âI want that damn king of Donnelly to pay for this. This is that bastardâs fault. How dare he take my only son from me?â
From the dark, I rolled my eyes. Not your only son, Father.
âMurdock was supposed to be my legacy,â King Torrance wailed. âMy heir.â
Oh, give me a break.
Murdock had been an ass. A boorish, vain, cruelly selfish ass. Worse so than Father because heâd been particularly reckless and ignorant in his asinine ways. Far Shore was better off with him gone. He wouldâve made the worst ruler this realm had ever seen. And that was saying a lot with all the tyrants whoâd traipsed through these halls before him.
Good riddance to Murdock was my sentiment.
âAnd that Donnelly fiend murdered him!â my father sneered. âSomething must be done to make Donnelly weep with regret, I tell you. The House of Lyker will not stand for this injustice. We shouldâwe should kidnap one of his children. Or his wife. His entire fucking family. He took my son; itâs only right that I take his. We could torture the whole lot of them until Donnelly forfeits a debt that drains their coffers to nothing, only to return his kin back to him in such disrepair that barely even an axe to the head could benefit them.â
One of his dignitaries bowed low. âAs always, you have devised a most wonderful plan, Your Majesty. The only problem, however, may lie with the fact that Donnellyâer, King Brentley, that isâhas n-no children to torture. Andâandââ
âThatâs right,â another dignitary jumped in to assist when the first became tongue-tied under the kingâs glare. Wringing his hands, he added, âAnd since his marriage was an arranged union to help Donnelly form their alliance with High Cliffââ
âYes, yes,â the king growled, waving a harassed hand. âThereâs no need to remind me of that. Iâm fully aware Donnelly chose to align themselves with High Cliff and not us. We waged a war against them because of it, did we not? A war I lost my only goddamn son in. Do you think Iâve forgotten about Donnellyâs fucking alliance with fucking High Cliff?â
âNo, Your Majesty, no. Not at all, of course not. I was just saying, uh, that maybe King Brentley isnât so fond of his wife, sinceâyou knowâhe was forced to marry the daughter of the High Cliff king to seal their alliance. We might be doing him a favor if we took her off his hands.â
âIdiot,â the king scoffed, backhanding the dignitary across the face. âIt doesnât matter what he thinks of the bitch. No man wants his possessions taken from him, regardless of his affection for it. Itâs a matter of pride, something a dullard like you could never comprehend.â
âBut theyâll declare war on us if we steal one of their noble family members,â the first man pleaded. âAnd theyâve defeated our armies twice now. You remember what they did the last time weââ
Surging to his feet, the king roared, âThink you Iâve lost my memories, you damn fool?! Why do you keep reminding me of everything I already know? Everything Iâve lost?â
âIâm sorry, Your Majesty. I justââ
âGet out of my sight!â Pointing toward the exit, King Torrance snarled at two of his nearest guards, âTake him to the dungeons. His services here are no longer required.â
âYour Majesty, no! I didnât mean it that way. I beseech you, please. Have mercy. I just thoughtââ
âAnd cut out his tongue,â the king added. âIâm tired of his incessant prattling.â
As the guards dragged the weeping, flailing dignitary from the room, they had to jerk to a halt and pause when another man stumbled through the entrance, blocking their path.
Yawning and scratching his chest as he came, the newcomer eyed the trio impatiently before stepping aside to allow them departure, waving his hands in dramatic sarcasm for them to go first. Then he reached between his legs and grabbed himself, leering after them, before he swaggered across the floor toward his own seat of honor to the left of the throne, finally gaining the kingâs attention.
âGreggor!â my father greeted his dearest companion and top advisor with a relieved sigh. âWhere the hell have you been, old chap? Iâve been surrounded by imbeciles in here.â
âOh, Iâm not so sure about that, Tor; the imbeciles had a point, if you ask me.â Groaning in pleasure, Greggor fell into his cushioned chair, hooked his legs over one armrest, and rested his arm on the other to get comfortable before languidly returning his gaze to the king. âWeâll incite High Cliff by taking their princess from Donnelly. Then youâll have two realms after your head. Not to mention Donnelly has that dragon. Do you really wish to risk all that just because you couldnât throw another boy?â
Ignoring the insult against himself, the king waved an unconcerned hand. âMy sources tell me the Donnelly dragonâs dead.â
âFine then.â Greggor belched and picked up an apple from his side table before dusting it off against his chest and biting into it. âStart a war with Donnelly. Who am I to deny the most powerful man in the kingdom?â After winking at the king for his mocking flare over the title, he inadvertently spit apple chunks when he added, âBut seriously, donât take Brentleyâs wife. High Cliff wonât be as feverish to join the fray if you choose someone other than their precious princess to mutilate.â
The king scowled at him. âThen who do I take?â
Greggor tapped the apple thoughtfully against his chin before holding it up. âIâd say the best bet would be the Donnelly princess, not the High Cliff one. They say Brentleyâs young sister is quite a treasure. Beautiful, intoxicating, and kind. She must be adored by both her people and the king himself. Heâd be outraged and heartbroken all in one if we stole her and raped her of her pretty, polished glow. Why, her big brother might never recover.â
âThe Donnelly princess, you say? Not their queen?â The king squinted through a considering nod. âI wasnât even aware there was one.â Then he clapped his hands and rubbed them together. âBut I like this. Yes, letâs kidnap Princess whatever-her-name-is.â
Greggor smirked in amusement. âItâs Nicolette, I believe.â
Nicolette?
Pulling back, I blinked in shock because I knew Nicolette. Barely, but stillâŠ
Recognition poured through me as my father waved a hand. âWhatever. Just get her to me. I want to be personally involved in paying her back for what her brother did to my son. Hell, maybe I can grow a male in her belly.â
Shuddering, I eased deeper behind the tapestry as my mind reeled.
Nicolette.
I guess she had told me she was the kingâs sister, but it hadnât registered that she was the princess Greggor and my father were discussing until theyâd said her actual name.
At the time of our whirlwind introduction, Iâd been too swept away by the energy and life in her dark brown eyes to truly comprehend who she was. My savior in a nightdress and dark flowing hair had snatched me from the jaws of death and led me out of the Donnelly castle mere moments before I wouldâve been executed.
The night our army had first invaded Donnelly, and the very same night my half brother, Murdock, had lost his life, Iâd been captured and chained with a dozen other soldiers. Weâd been held in their dungeon for hours before we were paraded in front of their new king.
Donnelly had promised to grant us clemency if we would only bend the knee and place our allegiance to him. Most of the others had given in immediately, kneeling before King Brentley and bowing their heads, becoming traitors to Far Shore.
But I hadnât. How could I? What would my father have done if he learned Iâd decided to serve another kingdom instead of his? No, it wouldâve been much nobler to die loyal to his name. Maybe he wouldâve been proud of me then, possibly even commissioned a small statue in my honorâas he had for Murdockâand claimed me as his son postmortem.
Before I knew it, though, some stranger commanded that I be separated from the others. He then led me away to the lovely, exotic Nicolette of Donnelly whoâd freed me from my chains.
As soon as sheâd torn the metal cuffs from my wrists, she had touched my face tenderly. âYou donât have to understand. Just know that I love you with every breath of air in my lungs, and Iâll do everything within my power to make sure you live.â
Sheâd obviously been soft in the head. Her ignorant guard mustâve been sleeping on the job, and sheâd escaped her room to roam the castle a little too freely. Or something. Whatever the case, it mattered little in that moment, because a man didnât just forget something so bizarre and baffling.
While most of that night had been a blur, those few moments with her had stuck with me. Theyâd confused the devil out of me, but theyâd stuck. Because the dazzling stranger had kept her promise. I had lived that night.
She saved me.
I had worn myself to the bone, hiking through the Vast Desert for days before I set foot on Far Shore land again in order to return home. All because the girl whoâd called herself my one true love had given me the chance to make it.
I owed my life to her.
Listening to my father and Greggor discuss capturing and torturing her set off an uneasy churn in my stomach.
From what I remembered, Nicolette had been sweet and innocent and way too gentle to mar in the vicious way they were describing.
âI hope sheâs untried,â the king was saying, his lips spreading wide with lascivious delight as he rubbed his hands together greedily. âI want to be the first to breach her maidenhead, show her what a true cock feels like.â
I winced.
âIn that case,â Greggor answered. âDonât send Morell for her. Heâs entirely incapable of keeping his prick out of a woman. Sheâd be half-swollen with his child by the time they made it back to Far Shore.â
âFine. Weâll send the eunuch Borell, then.â
But his advisor made a face. âWith his temper? Borell would strangle her to death the first night she whined and pleaded for a pillow and a foot massage.â
âThen who should we send to fetch her?â Torrance roared. âCurse you! Stop coming up with obstacles and do your damn job for once. Give me some fucking solutions!â
In his frustration, he threw a goblet across the room.
Directly at the tapestry I was hiding behind.
The cloth gave a sudden lurch as the cup slammed against it, near my head. I hissed in surprise and ducked just before the entire piece of embroidered artwork ripped free from its frame and pooled to the floor in front of me, leaving me exposed to the room full of dignitaries, guards, and my already-enraged father.
Hell fire. This was not the best night to get caught spying on the most cantankerous king in the Outer Realms. His son or not, I was probably as good as dead now.
âWhat the devil? Seize him!â the king shouted, making a swarm of guards surge forward and descend upon me, hollering and aiming spears at my throat.
Straightening from my cringe, I offered them a rueful smile and then waved. âUm, greetings?â
