Chapter 4

MILLY

I could feel Wyatt trailing me, but I didn’t stop. I had to keep going, or I’d lose it. My life was turning into a bad joke, one disaster after another, and I was fed up.

When would it all stop?

I kept going until Wyatt’s presence faded. I stomped my way to the training grounds, needing to vent my frustration before I hurt someone.

I wasn’t sure how much time had passed before I felt Reign behind me, but I’d been at the training grounds long enough to break a sweat.

“Wyatt told me what happened.” She joined me in sparring.

I grunted in response, and we fell into our usual training rhythm.

“Want to talk about it?” she asked.

“Not really,” I muttered.

She nodded, and we continued in silence.

“Did you really tell Uncle Diego ‘Fuck the family’?” she asked, smirking as we circled each other.

I sighed heavily, pausing to drink some water. “Yeah, you should’ve seen his face. I’m surprised I’m still alive.”

Reign laughed, taking a gulp of her water. “What’s going on?” she asked.

I looked up at the sky. “I’m just tired of the constant fighting, the life-and-death situations. Aren’t you? Aren’t you worried about Amaris?” I was practically yelling now.

She put her hands on her hips. “This isn’t like you. You’re a warrior. You fight for what you believe in, to the bitter end. Why are you giving up now?”

I huffed, drinking more water.

She watched me as I walked to the edge of the training ring. “You can avoid answering all you want, Milly, but I’m not leaving until you do.”

“After I died and came back, Dad told me family is everything. But now I’m supposed to be queen of two packs. How am I supposed to be responsible for that many wolves?”

Reign watched me pace. “Grams wants Wyatt and me to take over the thrones, not because she thinks we’re ready. She wants us to gain enough power to overthrow her crazy father. When will it end, Reign?”

I turned to face her.

She bit her lip, looking off into the distance. “I don’t know how to fix this,” she whispered.

Reign was meant to be an amazing alpha, but the family drama was splitting her focus. Her pack was suffering because she couldn’t be there.

“We’ve spilled so much blood, sweat, and tears for this family. When does it stop? Our own uncles are plotting against us,” I said, stepping toward her.

“You and Axel are orphans. Axel almost lost Storm. I died. When do we say enough is enough?” I pressed her.

“Milly, what you’re suggesting is treason,” Reign whispered.

“I’m not suggesting anything,” I said, crossing my arms.

She rolled her eyes. “Oh, please, Milly. Do you think I’m stupid? I’ve known you our whole lives. We’ve fought side by side for our pack, our family. This isn’t you. We can’t kill our family.” She was pale now.

“I didn’t say anything about killing anyone,” I said.

She glared at me, crossing her arms.

She knew what I was implying. We had to stop this. The twins had betrayed us time and again, and I wasn’t sure how much fight I had left in me.

“Did you really call our family a badly written TV show?” Reign scoffed.

I laughed as we walked back toward the pack house. “Yeah. Well, it is, isn’t it?”

She laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is lately.”

We walked the rest of the way in silence. Reign and I had always been close. It was us against the boys our whole lives. We were more than cousins; we were practically sisters.

She might not like my silent suggestion, but I knew she’d have my back if it came down to it.

She was right, though. It was treason. Did anyone even have enough power to go against them? Did anyone even know anything about them?

I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation with them, to be honest.

I followed Reign to her office, not ready to go home yet.

“So, are you going to sit here all night avoiding reality?” Reign asked, looking at the file in her hand.

I rolled my eyes and slumped into a chair. “I’m not avoiding anything,” I snapped.

“Sure, and I’m the tooth fairy,” she said, flipping through the file.

“I don’t know what to do, Reign. How do we keep fighting?”

She sat down and sighed heavily. “Honestly, I don’t know. Grams says he’s after some power. The only great power I can think of is the White Wolf.”

“But you could die!” I exclaimed.

“Well, we’ll have to find a way to keep me alive then, won’t we?” she said, smirking.

I didn’t like this. Our family had sacrificed so much for some ancient feud between a man and his daughter.

“Maybe we should just leave Grams to it,” I muttered.

Reign stayed silent, just looking at me.

I stood up and left her office, heading home.

I’m not fighting anymore. I’m done.
