SKYLER
“You should have seen her face, her eyes were the size of a saucer pan!” I heard someone say, followed by some person giggling uncontrollably, and I immediately knew who it was.
As I was rounding the corner to the kitchen, my steps slowed until they came to a halt as I listened with my back pressed to a wall to the people who were making fun of me.
They all knew how much I feared werewolves in general, and yet they made fun of me all the same.
“I could never get how she’s so fidgety all the time, it’s like she’s always ready in case someone is ready to pounce on her,” Aurora continued.
But if only they knew.
“Hey! I wouldn’t mind sneaking up on her and giving her the scare of her life just to see her reaction,” someone chimed in with so much enthusiasm it made me want to go in there and smack it right back down the person’s throat.
“Aw man, that wouldn’t be fair…”
I smiled internally at the thought of someone standing up for me.
“…we should both do it!” And all I heard after that was their throaty laughter. Anger was propelling my limbs, and the tray that I was holding onto felt the pressure of my wrath as my nose flared and my breathing became abnormal.
“I honestly think she’s exaggerating the whole thing—”
But I didn’t even stay there to listen to any more of what they had to say.
Turning on my heel, I pushed the double doors with so much force they collided with the walls along with an unpleasant screeching noise that had all heads turning their attention to the interruption.
Instantly my nose was welcomed with the familiar scent of grease and spices but I didn’t dwell on the simplicity as my eyes scanned the room for the hypocrites, and when my eyes landed on them, I gave the most sadistic smile I could and walked over to where all five of them were seated.
I looked into each of their eyes until mine and Aurora’s made contact, and instantly I sucked in a breath to calm myself. There was so much intensity in my eyes that I saw her fidgeting slightly.
“Who’s fidgety now, huh?”
My legs carried me until I finally stood in front of her with the same sadistic smile on my face, of course.
“Oh hey, Skyler, what brings you here?” she asked nervously while giving a guilty smile.
“Oh nothing really, just returning this tray,” I countered sweetly.
“Uh…o-okay,” she said while turning her attention back to the group, who were awfully quiet all of a sudden.
“Soooo…what are you all doing here, early break?” I asked calmly.
“Well—nothing really, just talking…”
“Oh yeah… I forgot, y’all were talking about me.” I spoke with sarcasm while slapping my forehead in the process.
They all looked at each other with what I could say was surprise and embarrassment, and Aurora visibly gulped.
“We were just—”
“Making fun of me, I get it totally…” I interjected before Aurora could even finish her sentence.
“But you know what I don’t get… is the fact that someone died less than twenty-four hours ago and y’all have the audacity to sit here and talk behind my back instead of mourning the loss of a fellow worker,” I continued as I began to lose my cool.
“How about you talk about how scared she must have been when she was being sent to the alpha’s room when she was not even a mistress of that sort—”
“Okay, we get it that you’re upset over your friend… well former friend, but there is nothing we can do nothing about it now.” A boy who I think was named Cleveland interrupted me midsentence.
But that only added fuel to my fire. I robotically turned and looked at the piece of crap that just uttered trash.
“Oh, but you don’t get it, Cleveland… You obviously don’t get it. What if it was you who got sent to his room last night and he was giving it to you…doggy style,” I added, and when I saw his face scrunch up in disgust I smirked because I knew I hit a nerve.
Yes, imagine it.
“And you, Aurora! How low can you get making fun of someone like that. Let me give it to you straight. I am scared of werewolves, because they were the ones who killed my parents without mercy. What if it were your parents who were killed in that rogue attack not so long ago?
“Just imagine how traumatizing it was watching my parents getting killed as the werewolves gnawed at their throats and licking the flesh from their spines until they became unrecognizable,” I sneered while watching their faces morphed into horror.
After my little rant no one spoke a word, and I didn’t expect them to. Let my words simmer in their brains for a while. When their silence became unbearable, I turned on my heel and began to walk away.
I couldn’t really explain how I was feeling right now. Hurt, sad, angry, and a little happy all the same.
“We didn’t mean to—”
But I stopped her even without looking at her. I just raised my hand indicating that she should be quiet.
“Forget it! Next time think before you talk shit.” Then I walked through the double doors I came through to do my gardening duties.
***
I kicked over a flowerpot angrily when I got frustrated with trying to trim the edges of the hibiscus evenly. All the flowers before this one were trimmed perfectly but this one…this one seemed as if it was a spawn of Satan.
Gardening duties were the worst thing one could do, especially in a place like this, and I hated it.
Everything had to be perfect, not a single leaf was supposed to be longer than the other, but the thing that pissed me off even more was that no one looked at flowers or trees; they were just the part of nature that didn’t quite go unnoticed but they didn’t get a lot of attention either.
One look at the broken flowerpot brought annoyance to my face. The dirt was splattered everywhere and I’d have to clean it up sooner rather than later.
So I did just that, I bent my sore muscles until the skin on my knee was pressing against the rough pavement.
My hands touched the broken pieces and I began to arrange them in a pile but from the corner of my eyes a figure appeared then disappeared even before my head whipped in its direction.
A spine-tingling sensation presented itself within me and I couldn’t help the tinge of fear that came with it also. However I became aware of where I was.
The garden was on the far side of the estate, which was right in front of the alpha’s room, and just the thought of the alpha passing by me brought beads of sweat to my face, for all I know he probably would be returning from his daily run by now.
The shuffling of bushes to my left brought me out of my frantic thoughts, and upon closer inspection, I saw a fluffy bunny hop from between them and run away.
Feeling annoyed, I rolled my eyes and went to continue my trimming, but just as I was about to do just that, I felt this strong urge to look over at the alpha’s window. I was just in time to see the outline of a person standing in front of the window looking toward where I was.
Looking at me.
Now call me paranoid all you want. I know what I was seeing, and this wasn’t just a figment of my imagination.
You’d think that the person would disappear after being caught staring, but no, they did quite the opposite and stood there firmly watching me from the confines of his window.
I was like a deer that caught sight of the lion that was just about to go in for the kill. And every muscle in my body was screaming at me to get away, to hide and never come out again, because in that particular moment, I knew he wasn’t some ordinary being.
My face broke out into a new layer of cold sweat. Even if I couldn’t see his face and it was just his outline, it was enough to knock me senseless and not in a good way.
My intuition told me who it was instantly, but I found it hard to accept.
He was out for his run, so how come he was in his room? Did that mean he came back early and was in his room all along, even when I carried in his breakfast?
No. This couldn’t be true. A gazillion thoughts swam through my brain. My eyes went dry from not squinting for over a minute or two from staring back. If only Cleveland or Aurora could see the horror written on my face right now.
Run.
And I was glad my legs got the message before my brain could process anything else.
