Book Two

HAZEL

I was lying in bed just listening to all the sounds around me. I never knew how many sounds there were in a house before.

Seth had pulled me back to bed once we had gotten over the initial shock of my new ability to hear things a normal human should not be able to. He had made me forget all about it for a good long while.

The feeling of him was all that had mattered, but now, lying in bed next to him in the late morning hours, I could not ignore it anymore.

Somehow my hearing had been highly improved. Something had happened when Seth had marked me, and we had no idea what it was. It scared me because it was unknown and we had no explanation for it.

Seth had tried to comfort me, telling me it was probably a temporary effect the mark had on me and that it would all be just fine.

But I could see the hint of worry in his eyes that he was trying so hard to hide from me.

I found that the more I focused, the more I could hear. There was the sound of tiny feet scratching against wooden floors, probably mice.

I could hear the groaning of pipes and creaking of wood caused by the wind.

I could hear Seth’s steady heartbeat as he lay next to me, completely relaxed and at ease.

“Sweetheart, are you all right?” Seth asked, his voice groggy with sleep.

“I’m fine; just thinking. Processing.” I said as he pulled me back into his chest and nuzzled my neck.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked, placing a kiss below my jaw.

“Just wondering what this means. The fact that I can now hear everything in this house,” I said.

“I also think we should probably get up at some point.”

There was a low rumbling in his chest that sent a pleasant shiver down my spine as he trailed kisses down my neck.

“I have no intention of leaving this bed anytime soon,” he murmured, his voice husky. There was definitely something poking me in the back.

“How can you be ready to do that again so soon?” I asked with a chuckle.

“I’m a werewolf, sweetheart,” he said as if that was explanation enough. Which I guess it was. He did seem to have an incredible amount of stamina.

And he was physically superior in other areas, so why not this too?

He turned me around in his arms so I was facing him before placing his lips on mine.

He kissed me leisurely, his lips moving against mine, warm and soft.

“Don’t you think staying in bed sounds like a good idea?” he asked me as he moved to kiss my mark. He slid one of his hands up to cup my breast.

He kneaded it in his palm, his thumb stroking over my sensitive nipple, eliciting a soft moan from my lips.

“You have some compelling arguments, husband,” I said as my breath quickened at his continued touches.

I pushed him onto his back and climbed up to straddle his hips. My hands found their way into his hair and our lips met again.

Our movements became more frantic and his hips bucked upward, grinding against me. Sounds of pleasure filled the room as we explored each other’s bodies, being as close as two people can possibly be.

We didn’t get much done that whole day. We made love, ate, slept, and just lay in each other’s arms and talked, and then made love some more.

It was pure bliss, and I was sure nothing would ever feel as good as this. I could’ve stayed like that forever and been perfectly happy and content.

We mostly stayed in our room over the next few days, only going downstairs to get food to bring back up.

We had wine and a cheese platter in the bathtub, placing the food on one of those wooden bathtub trays along with Seth’s laptop, upon which we watched a movie. It was lovely.

Seth’s mother stayed at the pack house most of the time; she only came back to sleep because she couldn’t stand sleeping at the pack house.

I hadn’t really noticed her absence, but Seth mentioned it when I asked where she was once I realized I couldn’t hear her.

I was glad she wasn’t here much. It was probably awkward for her—I knew it was for me if I gave myself time to think about it.

Finally we decided it was time to get back to the real world. Well, it was mostly me who decided.

Seth had been very reluctant, but we got dressed—something that was hard to do because Seth kept trying to remove every piece of clothing I put on—and headed downstairs to the kitchen.

Seth was going to make me breakfast.

He had his arm around my waist, keeping me close to his side as we walked toward the kitchen.

He kept dipping his head down to kiss me or nuzzle my neck. It made us move much more slowly than we normally would have, but I didn’t really mind.

When we rounded the corner to the kitchen, I heard the sound of the front door opening and closing, then footsteps coming in our direction.

I looked at Seth, who only rolled his eyes and pulled me toward the kitchen island. He let go of me as I hopped up on a barstool and turned toward the sound.

Seth proceeded to open the fridge and get things for breakfast.

“Morning guys,” Nate chirped, a wide grin plastered on his face.

“What do you want?” Seth grumbled, clearly not in the mood for visitors.

“Grumpy much?” Nate asked with a grin.

Seth just shook his head, looking slightly annoyed.

I was confused by the whole situation because Seth had seemed perfectly happy a few minutes earlier.

“Your mom said you were finally leaving your room, and I have some pack stuff to talk to you about,” Nate explained as he stood to lean against the island on the opposite side of me.

“Yes, I was afraid of that,” Seth sighed.

“I’m making breakfast, you’re welcome to stay and have some and we can go up to my office after and talk.”

“Sounds good, what are we having?”

“Scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon.”

My stomach grumbled in anticipation of the food to come. I was hungry and ready for something more substantial than what we’d been eating over the past few days.

“So,” Nate said, turning toward me.

“Got yourself a pretty little mark?” he asked slyly.

I flushed slightly while Seth growled a low growl toward him. He came to stand next to me, wrapping his arm around my waist.

I could tell he was getting more and more fed up with his beta by the minute.

“Hey, I’m just glad you guys finally boned. Let me tell you, this guy has not been too fun to be around with all that pent-up sexual frustration and the whole ‘trying not to mark you’ thing,” Nate said.

He was completely unfazed by the more-than-annoyed alpha who was glaring at him from across the kitchen island.

“Okay Nate, I think that’s enough,” I mumbled, my cheeks heating up again.

“I should kick your ass out right now,” Seth said as he tightened his hold on me. He leaned down and buried his nose in my hair, inhaling deeply.

“I thought you were making breakfast,” I said, trying to defuse the growing tension rolling off of my husband.

“I’m letting the stove heat up first, and I am trying not to rip into my beta, so just let me hold you here for a bit, okay?”

Nate just laughed and I shook my head, not fully understanding what had him so irritable and defensive.

“Dude, maybe you should explain to your wife what’s happening? She looks confused,” Nate said with a chuckle.

Seth sighed. He nuzzled his nose against my neck for a moment, then kissed the top of my head.

I turned around so I was facing him; he stood between my legs as I sat on the barstool. He seemed to think for a moment before he spoke.

“When we mate, males get a little extra protective, especially in the beginning,” he explained, letting out another long sigh.

“More protective?” I asked, my brows raised in amusement.

“Yes. I’m sorry sweetheart, I am trying not to be, but it’s very difficult. And having an unmated male in the house is not helping the matter,” he said, shooting a pointed look at Nate.

“Which he is well aware of, and he’s having way too much fun with it. I might actually have to kick his ass for real, just a little bit.”

“You can try,” Nate sing-songed with a grin.

I just laughed at them. They were like brothers, the way they acted and picked on each other. It was good for them, though, to have a friendship like that.

I was glad Seth had Nate. He was a good friend and a good beta, from what I could tell.

His positive, upbeat demeanor was good for Seth, who could tend to get broody and a little too serious at times.

Seth nuzzled his nose in my hair again, taking a deep breath before he went to start making our breakfast.

Nate chatted on about nothing in particular while the scent of bacon filled the room. It made my mouth water. I was really hungry.

“You know this is good for you, Seth,” Nate said as we all sat down at the island and dug into our food.

Seth sat next to me, and every now and then he would move his hand over me, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear or giving my knee a gentle squeeze as if he was trying to comfort me.

Though I think it was more to comfort himself, because I really didn’t need comforting.

“What’s that?”

“Having me here so you can practice not ripping a guy’s head off for being in the same room as your mate,” Nate replied, a small smirk playing at his lips.

“Hmm,” Seth grumbled.

“Seth, I think he may be right. I mean, I have to go back to work, and you have things to do. You can’t be with me all the time or keep us locked up in your house indefinitely,” I reasoned.

“You’re right, sweetheart,” he conceded as he stroked his thumb across my cheek and dipped down to give me a chaste kiss.

Nate just rolled his eyes.

“I know you mean well, Nate, but it is very hard to not be pissed at you right now. I’ll get over it eventually, but just—please don’t push it right now.”

“Duly noted.” He looked at me and gave me a wink, which made Seth direct a low growl at him again and made me roll my eyes at them both.

Men.
