LAUREN
“Are you still mad at me for what I said yesterday?” Juliet asked with concern. “I didn’t mean to sound harsh when I said that when you have a boyfriend we could talk about your sex life.”
Why did she have to bring this up again? She was going to have a stroke when she learned the truth. Then Travis would want to kill me for putting his beloved in this condition.
Okay, Lauren, I think you’ve seen too many crappy movies.
In case I hadn’t said this already, I was screwed for life.
I had no choice but to let her in. She had brought me a cup of coffee. Ever since we started drinking coffee and tea, one of us had always brought the other a drink the morning after a disagreement—as a way of apologizing.
I had to act normal so she wouldn’t suspect anything. What other choice did I have?
Damn it, Michael! I hate you for putting me in this position.
I hoped that if he woke up, he would be smart enough not to come out of my room. If he did, we were going to be in big trouble.
I plastered a fake smile on my face and stepped to the side to let her in. “You know I can’t stay mad at you.”
She looked me up and down after I took the coffee from her hand. “Are you sloppy today? How come you’re still in your bathrobe at this hour?”
Then the expression on her face changed to one of excitement. “Did a guy spend the night?” she asked, walking toward my room.
I set the cup of coffee down on the counter and launched myself at the door like a crazy person.
Great, I didn’t want her to suspect anything, but now she definitely would.
Juliet took a step back, surprised by my action. “You know I was only teasing you. What’s wrong with you? You seem tense.”
Lauren, quick, think of something, I snapped at myself.
“He’s married,” I blurted out.
Her eyes widened. “Is it Finn?”
I made a face. “What? No!”
She let out a breath.
I frowned. “Do you truly think I would do that to Jamie and Finn? How could you think that?” I asked, raising my voice. I couldn’t say that what she said didn’t hurt my feelings.
“I’m sorry.” She cleared her throat. “You’ve had a crush on Finn ever since I can remember. When you said that you slept with a married man, he was the first person I thought of.”
“This may be a surprise to you, but I don’t feel that way about Finn anymore.”
She took my hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to accuse you of anything.”
I shook my head. “No, it’s okay. I’m a little jumpy this morning. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”
I wanted to slap myself for saying that. Now all I could think about was Michael in my bed.
“He was that bad?” she asked.
“Huh?”
She pointed at the door behind me. “The guy in your bed. He didn’t satisfy you?”
Oh no, far from it. Your brother knows how to make me cum, I said inside my head.
Looking at the door, I noticed that it was slightly ajar. The sneaky bastard was listening to my conversation with his sister.
But what was he doing? Did he want to get hurt? She would kill us both. I would be first since I had betrayed her trust, and then she would kill him.
She shook her head in disbelief. “The expression on your face says it all.”
My eyes flicked to the door again.
If Michael wanted to eavesdrop, let’s have some fun.
“You’re right. He didn’t even know what to do to satisfy me,” I said loudly enough to make sure he heard me.
“I pity his wife.” She looked at me with concern.
“I don’t want to judge you, but how could you sleep with a married man? When I learned that Thomas was married, I ended things with him, and look where it got me.”
Shit. Me and my big mouth.
I didn’t want her to find out that I had slept with her little brother. Instead, I said that I had slept with a married man, only to now make her think about that asshole.
Shit! Shit! Shit!
I pulled her into a hug. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to get you thinking about that. I should never have said anything.”
She started to cry. It still affected her. “I know you didn’t mean to. You’re free to sleep with whoever you want. I just don’t want you to get hurt like I did.”
“I don’t want you to hate me for saying this, but maybe you should see someone who could help you cope with what happened to you,” I suggested, stroking her head.
She lightly tapped my arm. “Only Travis knows about this, but I made some calls to find a therapist I could talk to.”
I rested my chin on top of her head. “I’m so proud of you.”
After a while, she got up from her seat. “I have to go, or I’ll be late for work. Travis and I have a date tonight. I can’t wait,” she said excitedly.
I hugged her once more. “I’m so happy that you and Travis found each other.”
“Thank you, my friend.” She gave me a genuine smile. “Don’t you worry. One day, you’ll find someone for yourself.”
She glanced at my bedroom door. Thankfully, it was now fully closed. “I promise you, when you do, he won’t be a married man. He will be all yours.”
The problem was that the one I wanted, I couldn’t have.
Ugh! My life was so messed up.
She was about to walk to the door when she spotted my coffee on the counter. “Oh, you didn’t drink it.” Then she looked at her watch. “I’m going to be late for work. I have to go. Bye.”
I watched her leave, then jumped a little as I felt two strong arms circling my waist from behind.
“That was a close call,” Michael whispered in my ear.
I turned around to look at him. “You think?” I snapped, detaching myself from him.
He took me by the elbow and pulled me back to him. “Don’t be mad, Rain.”
I shook my head. “One of these days, you’ll have to tell me why you call me Rain.”
“One day, I promise.” He smirked.
Jerk!
He bent down, brushing his lips against mine. “Thank you,” he said seriously.
I looked up at him. “For what?”
“What you said to my sister. I appreciated it.”
I cupped his face. “She’s my best friend. I will always be there for her.”
He tightened his hold on me and rested his head in the crook of my neck. He didn’t talk much about what had happened to his sister, but I knew that it affected him.
He hadn’t been there to protect her.
After a while, he pulled back and looked at me with a frown on his face.
“What?” I asked.
He lifted an eyebrow. “So, I didn’t satisfy your needs yesterday?”
I backed away from him, holding my arms out, as he stepped toward me. “Michael, stop. You know I wasn’t telling the truth. I made up a story so your sister wouldn’t suspect anything.”
That stupid, smug smile was back on his face. “Let me remind you how hard I can make you cum.”
He deliberately hadn’t listened to a word I said to him. I knew it was wrong and that I was playing with fire. At this point, though, I wouldn’t mind getting burned by him again.
