Chapter 5

JAKE

I was amazed by my mate. She was fantastic. She avoided every attack as if she’d been training for years, and then when she attacked, she dominated Bonnie instantly. I was so proud of Sophie.

But when Bonnie showed her throat in defeat, Sophie didn’t back up. Her growl was all that could be heard on the grounds.

I had to stop her.

Sophie, my love, she surrendered. Stop. Release her.

She shook her head and looked at me. I begged her with my eyes to listen to me. She looked at the other pack members. At last, she looked down at Bonnie.

She stepped back quickly, looking around frantically. She was scared. Before I could say or do anything, she ran. I didn’t hesitate one moment—I shifted midair, my clothes shredding into a thousand pieces.

She was fast, but I was faster. I heard her frustrated howl. I had to catch her, fast. I pushed my wolf to the limit. I was at her tail within seconds.

Sophie, slow down. You need to talk to me.

She didn’t respond.

Nothing happened. You stopped—that’s what’s most important.

She picked up her pace. I was surprised by her speed. I had to take her down before she could shake me off.

I lunged at her and grabbed her scruff. I took her to the ground and pinned her.

She growled at me, unwilling to surrender.

Sophie, I need you to shift.

Still, she ignored me. I had no choice. I used my alpha voice.

Sophie, shift, now!

Her wolf squirmed beneath me. She tried to resist the order, but then she shifted. Immediately, I followed.

Sophie started crying. I scooped her up and placed her on my lap to soothe her.

“They all think I’m a freak, a monster. I saw their faces, Jake. They were scared—of me!”

I couldn’t deny her words because as much as I hated it, it was partially true.

“Sophie, they’re not scared of you as a person. They’re scared of the unknown.”

“Bonnie was scared. I saw the fear in her eyes. I almost hurt her, Jake!”

“Bonnie didn’t expect this to happen. She was surprised. And besides, you didn’t hurt her. You stopped. You listened to me.”

I could feel she didn’t believe me.

Jake, are you with her?” It was my dad coming through a mind-link.

I responded, “Yes, Dad. She’s with me. She’s very upset.

Take her to the pack house. Let her rest. I want to talk to you. I’ll make sure that you won’t come across any pack members.”

Thanks, Dad.

I looked at Sophie. “Come on, my love. Let me take you home. You need to rest.”

She didn’t respond, so I scooped her up and carried her back. She fell asleep in my arms.

I went straight to our room and put her down on the bed. When I was sure she was fast asleep, I left to talk to my dad.

SOPHIE

I woke up in a dark room. Jake wasn’t with me. I remembered what had happened earlier, and guilt immediately washed over me.

I heard a knock on the door.

I stood and opened the door. It was Bonnie. I took some steps backward to give her space. She didn’t hesitate, though, and came right up to me.

Bonnie wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug.

“Oh, Soof, don’t be sad. I’m not scared of you. I went too far with provoking you. I should have known better.”

I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders. I loved this girl so much. She was so selfless.

“I’m so sorry, Bee. I don’t know what happened. I want to say it won’t happen again, but I’m not completely sure. Something came over me. I wasn’t myself.”

She shook her head. “Nonsense. You just need to learn how to control your wolf. Everything is new for you, and you just got your wolf. She happens to be very, very strong, but I’m sure everything’s going to be all right.”

“Thank you, Bee” I whispered.

Suddenly, Jake walked in. He smiled at us.

Bonnie let me go and excused herself. “I’ll see you later, Soof. I love you.”

“I love you too, Bee.”

Jake pulled me into his arms. “Are you two good?”

I nodded. I was sure Jake had something to do with it. He must have spoken to her.

“Where have you been?” I asked.

“I had a conversation with my dad. He wants us to take precautionary measures, just to be on the safe side.”

“What kind of measures?”

“He thinks it’s better if you don’t fight again anytime soon—until we know more about your lineage.”

I nodded. I understood. “He isn’t mad at me?”

“Of course not, my love. It was his and Allan’s idea to let you fight, anyway.”

Jake gently squeezed my shoulders.

“They also assured the pack that no one needs to be scared. You just have to get to know your wolf. Now, let’s get to bed. We have an important day tomorrow.”

I’d almost forgotten about tomorrow. I needed to focus on one thing at a time. So I pushed the fight aside in my mind. There was nothing I could do about it right now.

As we lay in bed, my mind was still working at full speed. I pictured all the things my parents might say. Every scenario passed through my mind.

Jake pulled me closer to him. “Can’t sleep, gorgeous?”

“No. I can’t stop thinking about tomorrow.”

“Try to focus on my breathing. Let sleep take you over.”

I put my ear on his chest. I heard his steady breathing and calm heart.

After a while, those were the only things I heard. Finally, I fell asleep.

The next morning, Jake woke me up early. He kissed my eyes, my nose, and then my mouth. I smiled. He was so sweet.

“Come on, darling. Let’s shower.”

He pulled me up and led me to the bathroom. He turned on the shower and let it warm up.

While we washed each other, it was hard not to get distracted. But we needed to get moving soon. We had an important appointment with my parents.

After the shower, I dressed myself and looked into the mirror. My mark peeked out just a little from under my shirt. It wasn’t very flashy. If you didn’t know about it, you wouldn’t notice.

Jake walked up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. “Ready, my love?”

I nodded. Although I had a knot in my stomach, I was ready.

The ride to my parents’ house felt long. It only was an hour and a half away from the pack house, but it felt like a complete day.

When we reached their house, I saw movements behind the curtains. The front door opened, and my mom and dad stood there, waiting for us.

“It’s going to be fine.” Jake whispered.

“Here goes nothing,” I answered, and I opened the car door.
