Chapter Five

Daxon

Like every day since they’ve left, I drive with Percy and Dane back to his house and go in to give it a good check.

Chief doesn’t know I’m in his house as much as I am. I think it still gets under his skin. I mean, it’s weird for me.

Being arrested as much as I have by the guy doesn’t really sit well for either of us.

I get to see where he sleeps. Where he takes his morning dump. Where he rests his feet after a long hard day of cop shit.

Man, how things have changed in a year.

I would have done the worst of the worst if I’d had this shot before.

Toothbrush in my asscrack. Piss in the mouthwash. I drank his last beer. Took a shit in his closet. I’m sure I could think of better ones if I had the time.

“Alrighty-roo there, champ, looks like everything is still in place. Now, remember the chart? Where’s the chart? Do you have the chart? Why don’t you have the chart?

“I spent a lot of time on that chart, Percy; wait until I tell Savannah you didn’t care about my chart.”

Teasing him, I chirp in his ear until he unfolds the chart I’ve made for him.

The chart goes over the basics, like flesh wounds, what makes a good home bomb, where these things can be found, how to make a tourniquet, first aid, what the codes are for calls over our long range.

Stuff like that. Stuff to keep him safe and sound while we wipe the raiders off the map and everything goes back to normal.

“I’ve memorized the chart, Daxon. I promised you and Savannah. I think I should also mention that I don’t want to die. I just took my student loans out. I want to at least see my diploma before I see my casket.”

Percy really isn’t all that bad. A little stiffer than I’d like, but all in all, an all-around good dude.

“I’ve color-coded the femoral arteries here. So that’s important.’’ His deadpan delivery makes the wall crumble and the facade break through.

Laughing, I pat him on the back and look at Dane, who’s laughing along with me.

“All right, all right, okay. So Chief won’t be home until 4:04 am on the dot. You are not alone. Remember that.” I point my finger at him. He nods in agreement and starts to walk us toward the front door.

The show Vannah put on before they left…well, it didn’t do them any favors. A lot of the pack didn’t want to watch over them like we had agreed.

My brothers and I refused. Saying we gave her our word, that no matter what she was the one who brought us Mathias. And she is a luna. She is one of us.

Hearing them go all in with the hating again, all of us fought to keep our mouths shut.

Well…shut enough.

No, we couldn’t say that they were all wrong, but we could stand up and tell them lick our hairy assholes. And we did.

Well, I did.

Darrion didn’t really do much but stand there between us.

He’s starting to really piss me off with that.

He better get up in the morning and put in work at the cells.

Telling Percy goodnight and not to let the bedbugs bite, I give him “the look” to remind him again he ain’t alone and we are watching.

Grave is down at the city limits, so no one is getting in or out without being heavily checked. The raiders’ clubhouse is being watched at all times.

We have details about the chief man and the boys in blue down at the station.

“So, death penalty, huh?” Climbing onto my bike, I poke a little at Dane.

“Shut up.” He clasps the latch on his helmet before starting up his bike beside me.

“So moody he is.” Before he can kick his stand in, I lean over and do it. His bike goes slack before he can catch it. Pinching his ankle, I roar mine to life while he tells me to go fuck myself.

“What was that? I can’t hear you over the sound of me being a caring older brother.”

Backing up, I take off. I’m not going too fast since I can’t leave him unprotected. Gotta stay safe and be guarded at all ends. Never know when something bad is lurking around every corner.

Coming through the stop sign I kick into gear, letting my engine really come to life.

This is the best sound in the world. This right here.

I’m not heavy, but I love a good-sounding motor.

Yes, baby, listen to her purr. Damn, I got me a sexy-ass bitch right here.

Looking over my shoulder to check on Dane behind me, I don’t catch the green light for those about to hit the crosswalk.

I turn back, but it's too late.

Squeezing on the brakes, I lay my bike down, trying to stop before I hit her.
