Chapter 1

Book Two

Hayley and Jax have been through a whirlwind in the past few months, and it doesn’t seem like life will be slowing down anytime soon. Hayley is getting used to her new role as Luna of the Midnight Rose Pack while caring for her loved ones. Meanwhile, Jax is pouring his time and energy into figuring out how to keep his pack, and the entire supernatural world, safe from a looming threat.

HAYLEY

A lot has shifted in the past eight months. Some of it good, some of it not so much.

Axton mated with Dylan and is now working on the paperwork to adopt a little pup who lost his parents in the rogue attacks.

The little guy’s name is Zou and he’s only three years old, but he seems to get everything.

He knows that his mom and dad are gone and that Axton and Dylan are adopting him.

I think Zou’s understanding will make it easier for Axton and Dylan—they won’t have to have that tough talk about why he was adopted.

My luna ceremony has been pushed back until next month—Jax and I agreed we wanted to take things at our own speed.

So much has happened since I got here. I found my mate, my voice, and Aurora; I got married, I killed my dad, and I adopted a child, all in just a few months.

We just wanted a little bit of normalcy without the stress and pressure of making me luna. The pack sees me as their luna anyway, even though it’s not official yet.

It’s both terrifying and incredible that I have over a hundred people looking to me for guidance.

I’ve become much more involved with the pack’s activities. I go to the Rose Club every week to catch up with some of the females.

We usually talk about any issues within the pack, which I then discuss with Jax to find solutions. I’ve been able to get to know each of them better as they open up about their personal problems with their mates or pups.

I also train with the pack, and I’m starting to control when I shift. I used to only be able to shift into Aurora when I was really emotional, like when I was angry, but now I can shift into her even when I’m calm.

Our relationship is just as close as it ever was. Despite being apart for over a decade, our relationship is still easy, which I’m so thankful for. I’m not me without her.

Rose still barely leaves her room. I try to visit every day, but when I do, she doesn’t say much. Luke’s death has really hit her hard.

I don’t think it’s him specifically, but more the matebond, that’s affecting her. But the matebond is not something to be taken lightly; it’s very powerful.

I’ll stand by Rose through it all—I won’t let Luke ruin her from beyond the grave.

Lily was released from the hospital a few months ago after the doctor gave her the green light. Tom said that Lily was no longer at risk of infection and that she should be okay.

Lily has started therapy to help her deal with her thoughts. She’s confessed to Jax and me that she feels down and sad about losing her arm and her parents.

We thought it would be best if she had a professional help her navigate these thoughts and feelings.

Lily still feels comfortable talking to me about how she’s feeling, which I’m incredibly thankful for, but sometimes I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing. I guess that’s part of being a parent.

We’re waiting for the signature from the adoption agency and then Jax and I will legally be Lily’s parents.

We’ve set everything up and signed so many documents, and in just a few more days, we’ll be parents. I never thought I’d be a mother, let alone a mother to such an amazing pup.

Lily deserves the best in this world, and I’ll do whatever I can to make sure that happens for her. She should never—and will never—have to go through anything like I did growing up. I’ll make sure of it.

If anyone hurts my daughter, I’ll kill them, without a second thought.

I’ve just tucked Lily in for the night, and now I’m heading back to our bedroom where I know Jax is waiting. I walk into our bedroom and see Jax, his head bowed and his hands clasped as his elbows rest on his knees.

He’s been under a lot of stress lately, and he’s pushing himself to the limit. A new problem has come up, and it seems to be bigger than we first thought.

If it’s not resolved soon, we’ll all be in danger. Jax is used to dealing with it all, as he’s the alpha, but now he has me, his luna, to help him. We’re in this together.

Jax doesn’t look up when I enter the room, so I take the chance to quietly slip into our closet—I know just the thing to help my mate unwind.

Peeling off my jeans and oversized sweater, I grab my short silk robe that Jax loves so much and tie it snugly around my waist. It doesn’t cover much; exactly what I had in mind.

Leaning against the door, I clear my throat to get Jax’s attention. Letting my silk robe slide off my shoulders, I let it fall slowly, so gently, down my body to the floor.

Standing there naked, my scars on display, I tease Jax, saying, “Are you coming?” and gesture toward the bathroom for a shower. His mouth hangs open a bit, but he quickly recovers and stands up.

Walking over to me in just a few strides, he grabs my hips, pulling me to him. His hard body presses against mine and I can feel the heat radiating off him onto my fingertips.

Running his fingers up my back, he grabs a handful of my hair, holding my head still and leaning down to kiss me. Biting down on my lip, his tongue enters my mouth, claiming me as his.

My hands wrap around his neck and find their way into his hair. I tug at the ends lightly, making Jax let out a low growl.

My hands glide down his tattooed arms. Jax used to only have one sleeve on his left arm, but he recently got his right arm inked too. It just makes me want him even more.

He gently pushes me backward and we stumble into the bathroom. Without breaking our kiss, Jax turns the shower on.

“You’re a bit overdressed,” I murmur, stepping back. Jax yanks his shirt off and tosses it aside, not giving a damn where it lands. He starts to go for his pants, but I halt him.

“Allow me,” I suggest, a seductive grin playing on my lips. Dropping to my knees, I begin to undo his belt...
