ADIRE
Three weeks into my new job, I was finally starting to feel like I was making headway with the CEO. The work was challenging and the days were long, but I was making progress and that made the time fly by.
It was a bright, sunny day in Beijing. I didn’t have a pet to keep me company, so I decided to take a stroll through the bustling open market.
One vendor had spread out an array of trinkets on an old blanket. But it was the man next to him, with his green tapestry rug, who caught my attention. He was selling china dolls.
There were many dolls on the rug, but one in particular stood out. She was dressed in a navy blue and amethyst gown, her face meticulously painted, complete with bright red lips. Tiny red and gold tassels hung from her hair, and she held an umbrella adorned with matching tassels. The doll’s smile was infectious, and I found myself smiling back.
I picked her up, examining the fabric and craftsmanship. I didn’t care if there were any flaws—I was already in love with it. Now came the fun part: haggling over the price.
“How much for the doll?” I asked the vendor.
He held up two fingers. “Two hundred yuan.”
I shook my head. “That’s too much. Gao, yuan gao.”
I considered what I thought was a fair price. “Wishi yuan,” I countered. Fifty dollars seemed reasonable. But he came back with a counteroffer: “Seventy meiyuan.”
I nodded, accepting his offer. “Wo yaomai ta.” I reached into my oversized bag for my wallet, but before I could get it out, a hand appeared next to me and paid the vendor.
“Oh no, I couldn’t possibly accept that…” I began, turning to see who had paid.
Warm brown eyes met mine. “But I insist, A.B.,” Tyler said. He took the china doll from the vendor and handed it to me.
“I never pegged you for a doll collector,” he said, chuckling.
His comment rubbed me the wrong way. He didn’t know me, only what I chose to show him.
“I must insist on paying you back,” I said, starting to walk away from the vendor, the doll safely tucked in my bag.
Tyler fell into step beside me, his arm snaking around my waist, pulling me close. “How about you let me take you out to dinner instead? We can enjoy each other’s company, maybe try something new,” he suggested.
I slipped out of his grasp.
“Tyler, you seem to have forgotten my rules. I don’t date my pets. I don’t let them hold me, and I don’t have dinner with them,” I reminded him, pulling out my wallet and handing him the money.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me under an awning next to an indoor market. “You let Mills do all those things, and I was the one who had you first. Now that he’s not here, let me take you to dinner. Let’s enjoy each other’s company,” he said, smirking.
I pulled my arm free and took a step back.
“How did you know I was here, Tyler? And how did you know Mills wasn’t with me?” I asked, suspicious.
He grinned and took a step closer. “Easy. My family is negotiating with the Mewong Corporation. When I heard the Thompson Agency sent their best to work on the account, I told my father I’d personally make sure everything was in order before we made our move.”
I held out the money again. “I don’t understand you, Tyler. I’ve told you I’m not interested. I was flattered by your proposal, but I’m not in love with you,” I said, my voice rising. “Now, please. Leave me alone. Move on.”
He moved quickly, his face inches from mine. “Then let me have you like that asshole did. Give me that, and I’ll leave you alone,” he said, his voice low and crude.
I pushed against him. “I’m not some prostitute you can buy, Tyler!” I hissed, struggling to free myself. “I gave you my answer. Our agreement is over.”
Suddenly, his hand was at the back of my head, his tongue forcing its way into my mouth. I tried to push him away, but he only held me tighter. I managed to knee him in the groin, and he let go, doubling over in pain.
“You bitch,” he groaned, gasping for breath.
“I never want to see you again, Tyler! I’ll get a restraining order if I have to!” I shouted.
He laughed, a pained sound. “Fine. But I’ll make sure everyone at your company knows exactly what kind of woman you are, Adire. I even have pictures to prove it!” he spat.
I gasped. “What do you mean, you have photos of me?” I asked, my heart pounding.
“Baby, you slept. I’ve got some really good ones of you after our sessions together,” he chuckled.
I shook my head, denying his claim. “No, I never slept. I always left when we were done,” I argued.
He just shook his head, a knowing grin playing on his lips. “You fell asleep twice near the end of your stay with me. I couldn’t resist,” he said, smirking.
My mind spun, trying to recall those late nights of work, squeezing in time for Tyler and my much-needed stress relief. But I never fell asleep.
Then, I remembered that one afternoon with a four-hour meeting… I did. I did fall asleep, but it was only for fifteen minutes.
My eyes widened as I stared at the floor, trying to remember the second time… and then it hit me.
I heard him laugh, a sound still laced with pain from my knee. “Now you remember. I knew you would. You just needed a little time to think back,” he said, chuckling.
“Of course, when I took those pictures, I thought I was capturing moments with my future wife, not the woman who would reject me and leave me that night with ‘you were fun.’
“And, sweetheart, no one says no to me,” he growled.
I glared at him. “So, you’re going to blackmail me now? Threaten to ruin my career—for what? So I’ll marry you?” I spat.
His smile vanished, replaced by a coldness I never knew he possessed, seeping through his boy-next-door facade.
“No, sweetheart, you had your chance to marry me. That’s no longer on the table. I want you to be my personal plaything.
“You’re going to let me have you any way I want.
“And if that means tying you up, spanking you, forcing you to take my dick, then that’s exactly what you’re going to do!” he promised, his voice a harsh whisper.
I gasped, realizing the truth of his threat. His desires mirrored Jonathan’s, but this time I couldn’t even say no.
He stood up, the pain I’d inflicted having subsided enough for him to move again.
I took a step back, lifting my long, soft skirt to give me room to run if necessary.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll give you a couple of days to think it over,” he said, smiling.
I took another step back. “How do I know you’re telling the truth? You could be lying, Tyler,” I retorted.
He laughed at that. “Oh, the sophisticated Adire Black is now cursing at me. I guess she does know some adult words after all, doesn’t she?” he teased.
“Fine, give me your number, and I’ll send you one of the worst pictures I have, just so you know what you’re dealing with.”
I stood still, unsure of what to do. Should I give him my number, allowing him to call me whenever he wanted, or should I take a risk and see if he was bluffing…
“Fine, I’ll give you my number, then you can send me the picture,” I snapped at him.
He typed it into his phone, a cruel, hateful smile on his face. “You’ll be hearing from me, A.B. Don’t worry, sweetheart, you will, and our first night together, hmm, hmm, hmm.
“I’ve got some plans for you.” He grinned.
DAVIS
“We need an office in New York, Davis,” Donald Fraser was trying to convince him. “It’ll be beneficial for everyone.”
Yancy interrupted his speech. “I think you’re mistaken, Don…,” he began when Davis’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw Tony’s number.
“Excuse me, gentlemen. I need to take this call,” he told the group, pushing away from the table. He swiped the phone but didn’t answer until he was out of earshot. “Tony, what did you find?”
“Well, I found her mom living in Savannah, and I’m sending all the information your way.
“But your woman… Damn, she was hard to track down,” he said, sounding out of breath as if he was keeping pace with someone walking fast.
“Okay, but did you find her?”
“Yeah, oh shit! Hold on,” his voice grumbled, then Davis heard the phone snap a picture. “I found her all right. Right in the middle of being accosted and kneeing some guy in the balls.”
Davis’s hand flew to the back of his neck; he felt utterly helpless. “What?!” he exclaimed.
He looked around as the people in the office paused to see what was happening. He walked on, almost jogging, to his office.
“Did you stop it? Did you beat the shit out of the asshole who touched her? Damn it! Do we even know who the hell this jerk was?”
“She handled it herself, Davis. If he had pushed her, I would’ve stepped in, but you wanted me undercover.
“However, I did get close enough to hear him threatening her, and then she shouted her number to him.”
“Damn it!” Davis yelled.
“I’m sending you the picture I took of him just now.”
A second later, his phone buzzed. He swiped it open, and there was that jerk, Tyler Knight. “That’s the one who was harassing her?” he asked.
“Yeah, I would say harassed is an appropriate term for it.”
“I had a talk with that bastard when he showed up bothering her at a meet and greet not too long ago,” Davis shouted.
His hands raked through his hair. “I’m on my way to you right now!” Then he paused. “Where the hell are you, anyway?”
“I’m in goddamn Beijing.”
Davis collapsed into his chair, his heart sinking. She’d fled to Beijing to escape him. “What’s your next move?”
“I’m tailing your girl. She looks even worse than when Jon found her that night, Davis. I’m worried this guy might be bad news,” he admitted.
“Listen, I’m sending you a picture now. I snapped it right after she kneed some jerk in the balls and walked away. You’re not going to like it,” he cautioned.
Another buzz sounded, and he opened the message. Abie was captured mid-stride, a soft peach skirt billowing around her jeweled sandals.
She was wearing a white Chanel T-shirt, her hair straight and glossy, sunglasses perched atop her head. She was wiping away tears, a sorrowful frown etched on her face.
His heart shattered. She just couldn’t seem to shake these creeps. “Son of a bitch,” he cursed, frustrated that he couldn’t be there to deal with the jerk for her. “Do you know where she’s staying yet?”
“No, not yet, but I’ll let you know as soon as I do.”
“Alright, I’m heading out now. I’ll touch base once I’m in Beijing.”
“Sounds good. I’ll keep you posted,” Tony assured him before hanging up.
Davis rose from his chair, itching to punch something, but all he could think to do was hurl his phone.
And he was just about to do that when the damn thing started ringing in his hand. He glanced at the screen and saw an international number. His mind immediately jumped to Abie.
“Hello?” he answered swiftly, hoping his hunch was right.
“Hello, Mr. Mills. How are you?” a male voice inquired.
He was taken aback; he didn’t know anyone in Beijing. “I’m well, thank you. I’m sorry, but who is this?”
“Oh, yes, of course. It’s Lee Chow from the Mewong Corporation.”
It was strange that Lee Chow was calling him. “Yes, Lee. How are things over there?” Davis chuckled, trying to sound amiable and possibly glean some information.
After all, he knew the Thompson Agency was keen on landing Mewong as a client.
“Very well. The reason for my call is that we currently have your Ms. Black working for us. I was wondering if you were planning to visit her soon?” Lee asked.
Davis sank back into his chair. “You know, we were just discussing a potential visit. Would you mind if I came out and spent some quality time with her?”
A small grin tugged at his lips at his stroke of luck.
“No, we would be delighted to have you. I trust you’ll be arriving soon, then?”
“Absolutely, I’ll be on my plane within the hour,” he assured him. “Now, I know she mentioned where she’s staying, but for the life of me, I can’t recall the name.”
“Ah, yes. We’ve arranged for her to stay at the Jing. The best suite, of course,” Chow declared, and Davis sensed something was amiss, but he couldn’t be bothered at this point. He’d play along for now.
“Sounds good. Please inform the front desk that I’m planning a surprise visit. I don’t want anyone tipping her off that I’m en route,” he instructed carefully.
“Ah, yes. I will ensure it remains a secret,” Lee confirmed.
“That’s what I like to hear. I’ll see you all soon.” He ended the call, but this time, a smile played on his lips.
He knew where to find her and knew Tony was there to protect her until he arrived. It was time to reclaim his woman.
