I rolled in bed, groaning as I suddenly became aware of the massive tent I’d created. My after-school nap had turned into I’m so bored I might masturbate.
My hormones have been almost unbearable to control lately. In an attempt to distract myself, I recalled my invitation to tonight’s party. It was Friday evening, and I still had time to decide.
Slamming my locker shut, I turned to walk, but instead found a short blonde girl standing between my destination and me. Blinking, I realized it was Milo’s girlfriend.
“Hey, Jason,” Layla greeted me while bouncing on the balls of her feet.
Trying my best to hide my confusion, I replied, “Hi?”
When it clearly failed, she let out a small giggle. Reaching her hand out, she passed me a small card. “I wanted to invite you to my birthday party tonight,” she explained.
I took the card and observed it. There was a picture of her face on it along with the details of the event. I turned it over to find a blank side. Meeting her gaze, I shrugged, “Thanks.”
Layla and I had spoken a few times, but only when Milo was around. This was our first time speaking alone, so it felt strange. I decided to continue staring at the card.
Layla dismissed herself, turning to walk away. Before she was too far, she looked over her shoulder and added, “Kara’s going to be there.”
My gaze snapped back up to her, barely catching the smirk on her face before I was left staring at the back of her head. Was she trying to set me up with her friend?
Another groan escaped me as I realized Kara was on my mind again. It wasn’t like I was falling for her or anything, but I had to admit something about her presence had caught my attention.
She wasn’t the quiet, soft, dainty girl like most of the girls at our school. Kara was outspoken, feisty, and bold. It had me intrigued.
Sighing, I came to the conclusion I was going to see her tonight.

Excited voices buzzed around Q and me as we waited to enter Layla’s home. Apparently, Layla’s parties were known to be entertaining, and due to that, many people wanted to come.
To keep it under control, she’d only allow you in if you had an invitation.
I was glad Q was willing to come. It wasn’t hard to convince him when he knew Jessica would also be here tonight. We were both looking for our girls.
When the front doors finally opened, the crowd cheered, eager to start the party. Staring over the heads of people in front of me, I saw Kara was one of the people checking for invitations.
I made sure to follow the line on her side. An eager wave coursed through me as I got closer to her. I loved seeing her reactions; they were amusing.
The distance between us closed, and I approached her. “Someone doesn’t look too happy.” Kara must’ve recognized my voice because she immediately snapped her gaze up from the pile of cards growing at her feet.
I noticed her face flush.
Without missing a beat, she replied, “That’s because you’re here.” I chuckled and walked past her, deciding to explore the scene within the large house.
She was currently busy, so my teasing would have to wait until later.
Time passed, and I was growing bored. My friends were all either with their girlfriends or busy trying to talk to the girl they liked. Sighing, I decided to search for Q.
Something familiar struck me, and I realized he was walking and talking to Kara. That caught my attention, so I took the opportunity to walk up to them.
Swinging my arm around Q, I greeted, “Well, if it isn’t Cora.” I smirked as Kara’s face twisted with annoyance.
Giving me a bitter smile, she retaliated. “Hey, Jackson.” My grin dropped, realizing I had set myself up for that one. Damn, she was good.
Switching the topic, I turned to my friend. “Q, you know Kara?” I removed my arm from him.
Quintin shrugged. “Not really, but I’m hoping to.” I blinked as I listened to his response. Thrown off guard, I watched between the two of them.
Dude, what’re you doing? You’re crushing on her best friend.
Deciding not to say anything, I remained quiet. Q would explain later.
Kara hesitantly smiled. “Maybe we can hang out soon, as friends?”
Q immediately grinned, happy with her reply. “That’s cool with me.”
I suddenly understood what he was doing—trying to become friends with Kara so he could get closer to Jessica. That smart little shit.
The three of us stood silently before we were interrupted.
“Kara.” A feminine voice approached us. I turned my gaze to the brunette standing near Kara. She looked extremely uncomfortable.
Kara’s demeanor shifted. “What the hell are you doing here?” she hissed venomously. My eyebrows shot up into my hairline as I watched the two girls interact.
“I—my friend was invited.” The unknown girl’s large brown eyes flickered to me. I had no idea what was going on, so I remained quiet and observed.
“Well, are you going to talk?” Kara snapped, causing the girl to remove her eyes from me. Kara’s body visibly shook with rage.
“I’m sorry.” The girl shook her head, looking lost, and walked away quickly.
Without thinking, I asked, “Who was that?” My gaze remained on the scared girl running away from Kara. I was curious as to what happened between them.
“The girl Adam left me for.” Kara blurted the words out with distaste. So that’s why they got into a fight at my party—Adam was trying to get her back.
In an attempt to make her feel better, I joked, “Did you see her nails? Don’t make me bring up that shape job.” Kara let out a soft laugh before realizing what she’d done and coughing to cover it up. It was cute.
Trailing my eyes up and down her body, I added, “You, on the other hand.” Kara’s eyes flashed to me in surprise, trying to figure out if I was being honest or joking.
Staring at her in that red dress, I was most definitely being honest.
“Well,”—I noticed Kara rub her legs together. Bingo—“I’ve got to go.” She spun around quickly, causing the bottom of her dress to twirl. I involuntarily peeked, noticing the exposed smooth skin that was momentarily shown. Fuck. That’s hot.
Q elbowed me. “Bro, you’re practically drooling.” My friend rolled his eyes at me.
I grinned, feeling good. “I’ll be back.” I dismissed myself and began to follow the direction Kara went.
Even if she wanted to act cold around me, I knew the hidden reactions behind all her movements. Tonight, I was going to confirm it.
I finally caught sight of Kara at the edge of the dancing crowd in Layla’s large living room. She was standing on her tiptoes, searching the crowd for someone.
Closing the distance between us, I grabbed her wrist just before she was turning to leave. I pulled her back against my chest and lowered my hands to her hips.
“Dance with me?” I whispered into her ear.
Kara’s body was tense under my touch, but she didn’t push me away or make a move to run.
“Relax,” I said. My hold on her loosened, letting her know if she wanted to leave, she could. Instead, I started to sway behind her.
As a new song began to play, I felt Kara relax against me. I took the opportunity to continue convincing her and began to slide my hands up her sides.
Whether her reaction was intentional or not, I almost moaned when she arched her ass against me. My breathing hitched when she reached her arms back and placed them around my neck.
The feel of her plump ass rubbing against me immediately strained my member against my jeans. All blood rushed south. I decided to turn her so I could see her face.
Kara’s eyes were closed before she decided to flash her eyes open. I was greeted by her entrancing brown eyes.
Both of our chests were rising up and down against each other. The moment was so intense that I could feel her heartbeat against my chest.
I remained gazing into her eyes when I realized how pretty she was. Her almond-shaped eyes were sexy, and her lips looked red and soft. I wanted to kiss her.
“Jason.” A familiar nasally voice snapped. Ice coursed through my veins, and Kara and I jumped away from each other. I turned to see who had ripped us from our entrancing moment only to find my ex-fucking-girlfriend.
I gritted my teeth as I watched her stomp toward us with a jealous glare.
“What are you doing with my boyfriend?” Sarah screeched at Kara. The look on Kara’s face caused complete rage to consume me. Whatever small opportunity I had with her before had completely vanished.
Sarah turned to gaze at me and looked stunned when she realized how cold my stare toward her was. Before I could say anything, Kara took the opportunity to run.
Now that she was gone, I went off. “We’re over, Sarah. I’m not your boyfriend, I’m not your friend, I’m not even your acquaintance anymore.”
There was no hiding the clear rage I was currently feeling. My body shook with every word.
Sarah’s stunned look turned to anger. “You can’t just—”
“Don’t ever fucking interfere with my life again.” I cut her off and pushed past her. I was done with her controlling ways.
I’d given her a chance, thinking maybe I’d eventually get past what I thought was a façade. But those were her true colors.
Sighing, I walked away as I still felt the remaining tingling of Kara’s body pressed against mine.
