Chapter 1
Book 2
The moment we had the Lunas Mortis in our custody, a colossal investigation was set in motion. It was a joint effort between the packs and the council, aimed at uncovering any other potential accomplices. Brad and my father had multiple sessions with James, grilling him for information. Along with the others who were caught by the guard, we found a few more guards and an admin involved.
I toyed with the idea of confronting him myself, but Brad was against it. His protectiveness had amplified since he found out about my pregnancy. He was treating me as if I was made of glass. After the interrogations, the prisoners were handed over to the council. We were left to deal with the aftermath of the war, primarily establishing new leadership for the guard.
We also initiated a project to expand the logging company. It was a welcome distraction, but the routine of inspection and organization, coupled with my luna duties, was draining. The morning sickness was relentless. I was only two months into my pregnancy, and my mother had assured me it would subside by the third month. I was counting down the days.
My hormones were in overdrive, making me more temperamental than usual. And, well, more desirous. In simpler terms, I was either nauseous, exhausted, or horny. Lilian was a godsend, helping my mother in the kitchen. With the morning sickness and my work schedule, I was barely managing.
We had a meeting with the guard scheduled for the afternoon. So, I arrived at the site early to oversee the work, intending to switch to my luna duties later. I was inspecting the beams of the first part of the installation, my sneakers swapped for wellies and a protective helmet on my head. Suddenly, the familiar scent of pine filled my nostrils. Before I could react, a hand snaked around my waist, pulling me against a hard body. Brad turned me around to face him, tilting my chin up and planting a soft kiss on my lips.
“I came to see my favorite engineer,” he murmured, his arms still wrapped around my waist.
“I love your visits, but you should be wearing a helmet,” I replied, pulling him aside as a winch hoisted another beam next to us. “Let’s go to the office.” I gestured toward my container office nearby. “Is this a visit from the alpha wanting a progress report, or from my mate wanting to see me?”
We navigated through the construction site, dodging obstacles and narrowly avoiding a muddy mishap.
“Both,” he replied as we reached the office, pulling me close again. “Even after two months, I can’t get enough of hearing you call me mate.” He kissed me again, this time with more intensity. My hands found their way to his neck, pulling him closer. I could tell he was surprised by my reaction, but he wrapped his arms around me. My hormones kicked in, and I was suddenly consumed by desire. I needed him, right then and there. My hands moved to his pants, squeezing his hard cock through the fabric. He broke the kiss with a groan, looking at me with heated eyes. I was about to undo his pants when the office door swung open, causing me to step back. Brad quickly turned away.
“Luna Alice, the three beams have been placed…,” my foreman, Mike, began, but stopped when he saw Brad. “Alpha,” he greeted.
Brad, trying to hide his arousal, sat on my desk and returned the greeting. “Mike.”
“Great, Mike. Any news on the bricks? Are they arriving tomorrow?” I asked, picking up an invoice from the table. I shot Brad a mischievous glance over my shoulder.
“Probably, but I’ll call to confirm. You won’t be back in the afternoon, right? I need to have a conference this morning.”
“Yes, I won’t be back after lunch. Go ahead with the conference, Mike. I’ll catch up with you later,” I replied. Mike nodded and left the container.
“I thought you were coming to the pack house with me, love,” Brad said, standing up.
“I thought so too, but I need to attend the conference in the morning. I’ll meet you at the pack house for lunch. We can pick up where we left off during our break before the meeting,” I suggested, moving closer to him. I pulled his face down for a kiss, but he kept it brief and gently pushed me away.
“I need to leave without making a spectacle of myself, Alice…”
I laughed heartily, releasing him. He left my office, skillfully avoiding the lumber. I watched him go, appreciating every inch of him. I let out a heavy sigh, rubbing my belly gently.
“We’re lucky to have him…,” I whispered to our unborn child. With that, I left the office to join Mike for the conference.
