Humanborn

A. Makkelie

Dark Wood

“I’m gonna kill them! I’m gonna rip their limbs from their bodies and make sure there’s nothing left!” Mike was furious.

He kept running and didn’t know where he was or how long it had been, but his rage was still there.

“How could a pack of werewolves torture a five-year-old girl!? What kind of sick bastards are they!?” Dominic felt his anger because it was his as well.

As soon as Kiara had told him how old she was, Mike took over and started running. It was too much.

The confusion about why she affected him.

The anger toward the Dark Wood Pack for torturing and abusing a little girl.

Not knowing what she was.

Dominic sighed. She looked human. Everything about her showed that she was a human. But why didn’t she have a scent?

How could she be a human when her parents were both wolves?

How could she survive a wolf’s bite?

And most important of all, how did she know his wolf name was Mike?!

He’d never told her his wolf name, and there was no way she could have heard it somewhere else. She hadn’t talked to anyone since she’d been there, so he was certain of that.

“I’m gonna kill them all!” Mike said.

Dominic sighed again. “I know you want to, but we don’t know anything. There are too many questions unanswered.”

Mike growled and jumped over a fallen tree. “What are we gonna do about her?” Dominic didn’t answer. He didn’t know.

“Yeah, I don’t know either, Nic. But we’re an alpha. It’s not like we can just let it go. There is a girl in our pack we don’t know.

“There are indeed too many unanswered questions, and they’re all about her. We must figure out what the fuck she is and, most importantly, if she is a danger. We have our pack to think about.”

“I know, Mike. I’m fully aware of that. I just don’t know what the best next move is.”

Mike avoided a tree and finally became aware of his surroundings. “Where the hell are we?”

“Are you seriously asking me that? You’re the one who’s running!” Dominic replied.

Mike rolled his eyes and slowed down. The forest was different here. The trees were close to each other, which made it darker.

“Why do I have a feeling of a threat hiding behind the trees?” Mike asked. He remained quiet and walked slowly ahead. After a while, a house appeared in front of him.

“It’s a pack house. But where are all the wolves?” Mike looked around.

“I don’t know,” Dominic said.

Mike took another step, and a metallic scent filled his nose and made his eyes water.

Blood.

“I think I know where we are,” Dominic’s voice was warning. Mike walked toward the house and heard voices coming from it. “Mike, give me back some control.”

Mike obeyed without question. He walked toward a bush and hid behind it. Far enough for them not to smell him, but close enough for him to hear them.

“...I don’t care!” he heard.

“Alpha, I would never question you, but we’re in danger here. Blake and those fuckers could still be lurking around.”

Mike heard a low growl. He saw several dead wolves on the ground in front of the pack house. “Nic, I have a question. Why do you always have to be right?”

He heard Dominic chuckle. “Trust me, this time I didn’t want to be right.”

Mike saw three men walking out of the house. One of them had papers in his hand. Why would he risk getting attacked over a few papers?

“John, where’s the place?” the man with the papers asked one of the men.

“This way, Alpha.”

“Fuck. That’s Alpha Jamie, the alpha of the Dark Wood Pack,” Mike froze and looked at the other two men. “One of them is the beta, Mikah. The other one I don’t recognize.”

The men walked toward a tree not far from Mike.

“Why all this trouble for those papers? She’s probably already dead,” Mikah said.

Jamie turned around fast and grabbed Mikah by the throat. “Because if she were dead, we all would be dead as well!” His voice was filled with venom.

Was he talking about Kiara?

Why would they all be dead if she was?

Dominic had only encountered Jamie once. He was far from a loving and good alpha, and his entire pack feared him. Their whole pack was no different from rogues.

The only difference was that they weren’t actual rogues. They were always obsessed with the pure lycan, always trying to find him. The reason why was unknown.

“I’m sorry, Alpha. But I just don’t see the point. She’s just a worthless human.”

“That’s because we know something that you don’t, Mikah.”

“And what’s that, John? I’m the beta. I know everything that goes on in the pack.”

“Doesn’t he mean that he ‘knew’ everything that goes on since they don’t have a pack anymore?” Dominic chuckled at Mike.

“No, you don’t, Mikah. This you don’t.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Alpha?”

“It’s about that bitch of John’s. We’re not gonna discuss this out here.”

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“I’m saying that we need to get her back, before that bitch finds her mate!”

~“Wait, what? She’s supposed to be human; she can’t have a mate.”~ Mike sounded surprised and frustrated.

~“We just had our confirmation that she isn’t human, Mike. I’m guessing those papers will prove it even more.”~

Mike chuckled. ~“Let’s go get them.”~ He started to go after them, but Dominic stopped him.

~“What the fuck are you doing? Jamie is an alpha, Mikah is a beta, and they have a guy for backup. We’re alone! It’s suicide!”~

~“You said that those papers will prove it!”~

~“I didn’t mean that you should go straight ahead and get us killed!”~

~“How should I know what you mean!?”~

~“We share the same fucking mind!”~

~“Argh! I want another human!”~

~“Yeah, and I want another wolf, but we can’t, so don’t be a fucking child, Mike.”~ Mike growled lowly.

“What the fuck was that?” Jamie asked, looking toward the bush where Mike was hiding.

~“Good going, you idiot,”~ Dominic said.

~“Oh, so now I’m the idiot?”~

~“You growled!”~

~“You made me growl!”~

~“Fucking child!”~

~“Asshole!”~

~“Dog!”~

Dominic blocked Mike when Jamie walked toward the bush. They heard a howl in the distance.

“We need to get going.” John dug up a small box, and the three men ran away.

Another howl. Mike recognized the howl and knew Dean was looking for him. He ran toward the howl, and not long after, he found Dean.

They stopped in front of each other.

Dean bowed his head to Mike. ~“Alpha,”~ he said.

~“What are you doing here, Dean?”~

~“You’ve been gone for almost a day. I became worried.”~

Mike growled a little, sounding a little like a human chuckle. ~“So you came to look for me all by yourself?”~

~“You really think he’s that stupid, Alpha?”~ To Mike’s right was a wolf with gray eyes and dark-brown fur with patches of light brown. It was Mason, the wolf of his gamma, Kyle.

He bowed his head toward Mike.

“For a moment there, I thought he was. Who’s protecting the pack from that shithead Blake?”

Dominic chuckled in his head. “Shithead? Really? You call me an asshole and him a shithead?”

Mike rolled his eyes. “Shut up, Nic.”

“Cora is in charge.”

Mike whined. “Great. Mom is back in her element. Controlling wolves.”

“Why are you here? This is the territory—well, was the territory of the Dark Wood Pack,” Mason stated.

Mike nodded. “I know. I needed to run and didn’t take notice of where I was going. In the end, it was a good thing, because I found out exactly who is alive and that Kiara definitely isn’t human.”

Mason and Dean looked at each other for a second. “What do you mean?”

“I just saw Alpha Jamie, Beta Mikah, and a pack member of theirs called John digging up a box and securing some papers about a girl. That girl wasn’t called by her name, but they said she was John’s bitch.~

“Mikah told them that they didn’t have to go through all this trouble to get the stuff, because she would probably be dead by now, but Jamie was very clear that she was alive, because if she were dead, they would be dead too.

~“After that, he stated that they needed to get her back because she cannot find her mate.”

“How are you so sure that it’s about Kiara?” Dean asked.

“Because Mikah referred to her as ‘just a worthless human.’ Blake found only Kiara. There were no other humans here.”

Mason and Dean looked at him in shock. “A human can’t have a mate, so what is she?”

Mike shook his head. “I don’t know. But I’m going to find out. Let’s head back.”
