Well, This Is New

Zayla

I take a deep breath, stepping out of Soren’s house for the last time—alone. The next time I reach for this door, my mate will be with me.

Regardless of his fears or doubts, I’m determined to have him by my side. My soul and his worries can go to hell!

I force myself to walk away from his home, making the slow trek back to my own.

Choosing to take a scenic route around the territory line, I savor the feeling of being back in my human form.

I love being a wolf, but when you’re stuck in that form without a choice, it gets old real fast.

As I wander aimlessly, my mind is even more restless than my feet, flitting from one thought to another.

Climbing over a fallen tree in my path, I nearly lose my balance when a chorus of growls echoes through the trees in the distance.

I hop down and sprint towards the sound.

Reaching the source of the noise, I see my brothers, my father, and a few pack members under attack by a horde of at least fifty rogues.

I scan the chaotic scene, but I can’t find my mother. Where the hell is she?

I keep searching until I finally spot her. She’s pinned to the ground by a group of humans and wolves.

I see my father trying to reach her before he’s tackled to the ground.

I desperately try to summon my wolf, but she’s unresponsive.

“Damn it, I need you!” I scream, clutching my head as I watch them inject my parents with needles.

The moment my parents fall unconscious, my wolf roars to life inside me. She bursts out of me without warning.

She feels different this time. I glance down and see that our fur isn’t black like usual.

Instead, our fur is charred in patches, similar to Soren’s.

I don’t hesitate for more than a few seconds before I spring into action, tearing the wolves off my brothers. They look at me with concern as my body ignites.

“Get Mom and Dad!” I command through the mind-link, jolting them back to reality. The three of us charge forward.

With a brother on each side, we tear through the wolves and some humans until we reach Dad.

He’s unconscious, but I keep nudging him, trying to wake him up. I do this for several minutes while my brothers protect me and try to reach our mother, who is surrounded.

I call over a pack member and then rush to help my brothers. Just as I’m about to reach them, I’m distracted by a portal opening in the field.

A man in a suit steps out. I freeze as I watch him extract the soul of a dead wolf.

He shakes his head slowly, surveying the battlefield before his gaze locks onto me.

I see a mix of longing and admiration in his ash-gray eyes before he disappears back into the portal. I’m snapped back to reality by my brothers’ screams.

“Damn it, Zayla, help us! What the hell are you doing!!!”

I whip my head back to my brothers just in time to see them being pinned down by more wolves, and my mother’s body being loaded into a van.

I spring into action, quickly killing the wolves holding down my brother Draxel.

I help him up and we rush to my other brother, Drayden. But when he cries out in pain and collapses, I can’t suppress my anger any longer.

My concern for my family has been my priority until now. But now, rage courses through my veins, heating my body…

No, my body is on fire.

I sink my teeth into the last wolf nearby, and his screams fill the air as his body starts to burn.

The smell of burning flesh fills my nostrils. I keep my jaws clamped down on the now-dead wolf when I hear my brothers cry out again.

“No, Mom!!!” I snap my head towards the van just in time to see it speeding away, my brothers hot on its tail.

I sprint as fast as I can, cutting off the van.

I stand in front of the van, watching as the men inside stare at me in terror. In their windshield, I catch a glimpse of myself.

My body is fully engulfed in flames, patches of flesh and muscle missing, while my new fire shines brightly through the cracks.

My eyes are glowing, each iris a different color. One eye is a bright red, the other a vibrant purple. The body of the other wolf still dangles from my jaws.

I toss the dead wolf onto the ground, its body crackling like a log on a fire as it starts to burn out.

I leap onto the hood of the van, my paws denting and melting the metal.

My brothers are at the van’s doors, snapping their jaws and growling at the men inside.

Pack members who’ve just arrived guard the back door, while another tries to pry it open.

The men in the van are shouting orders at each other, some are on the phone, others are pulling out weapons.

Fed up with their games, I slam my head into the windshield—the bulletproof glass doesn’t shatter, it melts as my head burns through it.

I use my paws to smash the glass over and over until it finally breaks.

I dive into the van, attacking like a wild beast, tearing limbs from bodies as they scream for help and mercy.

Once I’ve dealt with the men in the front, I work on breaking through the barrier to the back of the van where my mother is. My brothers follow me into the cab of the van.

My wolf is seeing red; her instincts have completely taken over. She’s blind to everything except her mission.

When I finally break through the barrier, I see only four men and my mother’s body.

I spring at the one nearest to me, taking him down swiftly. My teeth sink into his jugular and with a swift jerk of my head, I tear the flesh from his body.

I dive into the next two, who are huddled together. My claws rake across their stomachs, my teeth sinking into any piece of flesh I can latch onto.

While I’m tangled up with these two, my brothers close in on the last human. I’m too caught up in my own fight to pay much attention to theirs…

That is, until the sharp crack of a gunshot echoes in my ear.
