Chapter 2

MAY

“All right, kids, we’re here!” I announced with a smile as our car pulled up to my childhood home. My daughters, Freya and Zora, were sound asleep in the backseat, while my sons, Orion and Cody, were engrossed in their video games.

I reached back and tapped on Orion’s leg to get his attention. “Sorry, Mom,” he apologized, putting away his game. Cody pouted at having to stop playing.

“Let’s go say hi to your grandma,” I said to the kids. My boys eagerly jumped out of the car.

“Orion, wake up your sisters before you escape, kiddo,” Aiden yelled out to him. Orion halted, jumping into the back of the vehicle to shake his sisters awake.

“Ugh,” I groaned as I saw my mom’s new boyfriend, Joel, opening the door for Cody. Aiden chuckled and kissed me on the cheek before getting out of the vehicle to retrieve the luggage.

“Don’t pout, love,” he said with a wink. “Let’s make this holiday memorable.” I smiled at his words and helped him grab our belongings from the car.

Eager excitement filled me as I thought about the next two weeks spent with my family. As we entered the house, Joel greeted us with a warm welcome.

“It’s good to see you both again,” he said as we walked in, taking the luggage from us. I gave him a polite nod. I noticed my mom in the back, looking between the two of us. She knew I wasn’t the biggest fan of Joel, but I did promise to be respectful to him.

The familiar scent of homemade apple pie filled the air, instantly bringing back memories of holidays spent here with my family. The familiar scent of pine and cinnamon filled the air as we stepped into the cozy living room.

The crackling fire in the stone fireplace cast a warm amber glow, illuminating the room adorned with twinkling Christmas lights and festive decorations. The walls were lined with generations of family portraits, capturing moments of joy and laughter throughout the years. My heart swelled with bittersweet memories as I caught sight of a picture of my father among them.

“Grandma!” Our children’s voices echoed through the room as they ran toward her, wrapping their arms around her in a loving embrace. It was heartwarming to see how excited they were to be here, surrounded by loved ones.

I hugged my mom tightly before helping Aiden carry our bags into the guest house at the back of the property. As I settled into the plush armchair next to Aiden, I took in the comforting nostalgia of being back in my childhood home.

The sound of joyful chatter filled the air as my kids caught up with their grandma. Their laughter blended harmoniously with the crackling fire. I glanced around the room and caught Joel’s gaze. His warm smile made me feel more at ease with his presence. He had been a part of my mom’s life for the past two years.

He approached us with a tray of steaming mugs in hand, filled with rich cocoa that reminded me of countless winters spent in this very living room. As I took a sip, the creamy chocolate melted on my tongue, bringing back fond memories and filling me with warmth and comfort.

Joel’s warm, inviting voice filled the room as he welcomed us to the holiday gathering despite the long drive. The air was thick with a sense of celebration and magic, amplified by the shimmering lights and decorations that adorned every corner. My mom had really outdone herself this year with the decor.

As the night went on, we were enthralled by Joel’s tales of holiday traditions. He spoke of enchanted snowfalls that brought wishes to life, ancient ornaments steeped in mystery and secrets, and the fabled mistletoe that held the promise of true love. His stories painted a picture of wonder and romance, captivating even the adults among the crowd.

The crackling fire cast dancing shadows on the walls, creating an intimate and enchanting atmosphere. I couldn’t help but steal glances at Aiden, our eyes communicating the unspoken thoughts and feelings between us.

Joel then suggested a stroll through the snowy woods surrounding the home, promising hidden surprises along the way. With scarves wrapped tightly around us and mittens protecting our hands from the cold, we ventured out into the winter wonderland.

The moon’s ethereal glow illuminated our path through the snow-covered landscape, inviting us deeper into the mysterious night. As we walked through the forest, our boots crunching on the snow created a rhythmic beat. Whispers of wind whispered secrets to us.

Shadows danced around us, playing tricks on our eyes while rustling leaves seemed to carry messages from the trees. It felt like we had stepped into a timeless tale of love and enchantment under the starry sky. I’d been in these woods countless times growing up, but never when it was dark. However, there was something mysterious about the forest at night.

Beneath a blanket of twinkling stars, we stumbled upon a clearing illuminated by flickering candles and fairy lights. In the center stood a magnificent tree, its branches adorned with shimmering crystals. Each branch held hundreds of frozen icicles, glistening like jewels under the moonlight.

Joel explained that each crystal held a wish, and if you dared to make one, the universe might just conspire to make it come true. As the children eagerly made their wishes, Aiden took my hand, his eyes reflecting the same mysterious twinkle that danced in the starlit night.

We whispered our own wishes, feeling the weight of holiday magic settle around us like a gentle, invisible embrace. The journey back to the house was filled with laughter and the enchantment of the night lingering in the air. As we cozied up by the fireplace once again, I couldn’t shake off my doubts about Joel’s intentions toward my mom.

That night, as we settled into our respective bedrooms, I lay in bed reflecting on the events of the evening. “What are you thinking about, love?” Aiden asked as he dried his hair with only a towel wrapped around his torso. It was a sight I shamelessly ogled at, though it didn’t go unnoticed by my husband.

“Maybe Joel isn’t so bad after all,” I confessed, my thoughts spilling out into the quiet night. Aiden joined me on the bed, his eyes reflecting curiosity and understanding.

“Maybe he’s just trying to make the holidays special for your mom, and he’s doing a great job entertaining the kids as well.” Aiden’s fingers danced lightly across my back in soothing circles as he spoke, his voice a gentle murmur.

Outside, the snow fell softly, blanketing everything in a serene layer of white. The air held a crisp chill, carrying the scent of pine and wood smoke through the house.

I leaned into Aiden’s warmth, taking comfort in his presence. Maybe I had been too quick to judge Joel. His efforts to make the holidays special for my mom and kids were admirable.

“You’re right,” I sighed, “his storytelling skills are truly amazing.” I nuzzled closer to Aiden, wanting nothing more than to stay in this moment forever. “I just want my mom to be happy.”

Aiden planted a soft kiss on my forehead. His words enveloped me like a warm hug. “She deserves it, and if Joel can make her happy, then maybe we should give him a chance.”

I slipped under the covers. The warm sheets were a welcome contrast to the coolness of the weather. Aiden followed suit, sliding an arm around me and drawing me close. The warmth of his touch was a balm, soothing the edges of any lingering stress. I closed my eyes, reveling in the familiar scent of his skin—a fragrance that whispered of safety and love.

As the sun rose over the snowy landscape the next morning, it painted the world in hues of pink and gold. I felt a renewed sense of hope and optimism for the day ahead. The promise of a fresh start filled me with warmth and joy.

Unlike my penchant for sleeping in, Aiden, the early riser, had left a comforting gesture that made the morning even more inviting. I sat up and sipped on the coffee, watching the sun rise from the window.

The cozy kitchen was filled with the pleasant sound of laughter and the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked muffins. Joel, his eyes sparkling with mischief, suggested a day of holiday baking. The kids’ faces lit up like bright bulbs on a Christmas tree, and I couldn’t resist getting caught up in the festive spirit.

The kitchen quickly transformed into a bustling workshop. We rolled out sugar cookie dough, sprinkled flour in every direction, and masterfully decorated each one with an array of colorful icing. The joyful chaos made me put aside any lingering doubts I had about Joel, and I found myself appreciating the effort he was putting into creating happy memories for our family.

As the day progressed, I couldn’t help but notice Joel stealing glances at my mom. His expression was filled with genuine adoration. It was then that I realized I had underestimated the depth of his feelings for her.

Suddenly, this vacation didn’t seem so dreadful after all. I snuggled closer to Aiden as we watched a rerun of a heartwarming holiday movie for the night. Freya and Cody were suckers for holiday movies. They nestled under a cozy blanket, their eyes glued to the screen, captivated by the scene on TV.

The soft glow of the Christmas lights adorned around the living room cast a warm ambiance, wrapping us in a cocoon of warmth. Zora slept soundly on Orion’s lap, his eyes also succumbing to the lull of the movie.

Aiden pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. I couldn’t help but marvel at the unexpected joy this simple evening had brought. In that moment, surrounded by the ones I loved, the vacation I had dreaded became a cherished memory. It proved that sometimes, the best moments are found in the simplest of times.
