Book 4: The Fate of the Moon

JAYDON

I find myself gazing into the void as my mate disappears into the forest. Iโ€™m at a loss, unsure whether to follow her, given what sheโ€™s been through. Yet, Iโ€™m also scared not to, fearing she might be putting herself in harmโ€™s way.
Sheโ€™s my destined partner, a blessing from the Moon Goddess. She shouldnโ€™t be running from me, but she is. Her soul is shattered, her pain visible in her eyes when they lock with mine.
She doesnโ€™t want me, but not for the reasons one might assume. What am I even talking about? Barely anyone would understand why she fled.
Only those who are aware of her battles, her suffering, the torment she faced years ago, can start to comprehend. My wolf is clawing at my consciousness, pleading with me to chase her. But I donโ€™t.
I know it as surely as I know my own nameโ€”the moment my sister Melanie glances at me and then dashes after Charity, I realize all I can do is wait.
โ€œJaydon?โ€ My motherโ€™s hand rests on my shoulder. โ€œLetโ€™s sit down, son.โ€
She guides me to the nearest chair. As my vision clears, I see Amara standing before us, her hands nervously twisting together.
Amara, Charityโ€™s mother, appears more devastated than I feel. Iโ€™m sure I just look stunned, but Amara is weepingโ€”truly sobbing.
โ€œIโ€™m so very sorry, Jaydon. Sheโ€™s in pain, you know,โ€ Amara manages to say.
I feel my mother move between Amara and me, whispering reassurances that itโ€™s not her fault and urging patience.
Before I know it, the only people left in our yard are my family and Amara. I have no memory of the party guests quietly leaving our yard and heading home.
I only know it must have happened because the silence is sudden. I exhale, almost in relief. Iโ€™ve always been a person who appreciates tranquility and solitude.
Iโ€™m not like my brother Max, who thrives on social interaction. I prefer more intimate settings, and having just my family here is more than enough for me.
โ€œDo you think Melanie will be able to bring her back?โ€ I finally ask.
โ€œIโ€™m sure of it, Jaydon, just give her time. Your sister is very good at this type of thing; besides being a doctor, she suffered her own trauma. She can help Charityโ€”just give it time,โ€ my mother reassures me.
โ€œDo you want to go talk to her in the woods?โ€ my father suggests. โ€œMaybe without the crowd, she would be okay.โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s a good idea. I would think sheโ€™s afraid of most men. Am I wrong?โ€ I turn to Amara for the answer.
โ€œItโ€™s hard to say. Sheโ€™s okay in our pack, but sheโ€™s never left alone with any male aside from her brother or father. I could send one of them to fetch her, but I think your mother is right. Itโ€™s best to let Melanie try and manage the situation.โ€
Amara seems certain of this, and no one argues. โ€œWe still need to get ready to go to Italy,โ€ Max reminds us. โ€œIs Jaydon staying here now? To deal with his mate?โ€
โ€œNo. I canโ€™t abandon my sister! I am going,โ€ I blurt out. I canโ€™t bear the thought of my own selfish needs causing me to leave my sister to die in a country that is not even her own.
Sheโ€™s my twin, my best friend. I canโ€™t let her down. โ€œJaydon, donโ€™t be ridiculous. She isnโ€™t going to die!โ€ my mother insists.
โ€œYou would not be abandoning her, and she would understand about Charity. We must think all of this through and make plans accordingly.โ€
I look at everyone, one at a time, determined to make the right choice. This is a test of my ability to prioritize others over myself, my pack over myself.
Isnโ€™t that what the alpha is supposed to do? โ€œWhat would you do, Max?โ€ I finally ask.
Max looks uncomfortable, and Iโ€™m suddenly reminded that he sent our sister to look for his mate, even though he didnโ€™t know at the time that Ginger was his true mate.
โ€œI canโ€™t make that choice for you, Jaydon. You know you have a mate, and yet you also have a twin with whom you have been through so much. I think that perhaps you need to talk to Charity when they return. See where her head is at.โ€
โ€œIF they return,โ€ I say.
โ€œIโ€™ve arranged for a private jet to Italy. Weโ€™re going to find Selene. Jaydon, itโ€™s up to you if you want to stay behind. I wonโ€™t hold it against you,โ€ my father says.
โ€œMaybe you could persuade Charity to join you. Use this time to sort out whateverโ€™s going on between you two while weโ€™re in Italy. But remember, it could be a distraction, and I canโ€™t stand the thought of anything happening to any of you. So, think about where your priorities lie.โ€
He pauses, then adds, โ€œLet me know your decision within the hour.โ€ He then walks away, heading into the pack house, leaving us all standing there.
Dirk breaks the silence. โ€œI think you should stay,โ€ he suggests. He raises his hands as if to show he means no harm.
โ€œIโ€™m only saying this because it could be a distraction. And distractions can be deadly. You can always join us later if we havenโ€™t found her yet.โ€
โ€œWait, youโ€™re going too?โ€ my mother asks Dirk, her voice filled with surprise.
โ€œYes, Luna. If Melanie is okay with itโ€”and I canโ€™t imagine she wouldnโ€™t be, considering itโ€™s her little sister weโ€™re talking aboutโ€”Iโ€™m well trained in survival tactics, and Iโ€™m a skilled warrior. Itโ€™s a Viking thing,โ€ Dirk replies.
โ€œI know,โ€ she says, shaking her head. โ€œBut if anything were to happen to you, Melanie would be devastated.โ€
Dirk glances around before turning back to me. โ€œJaydon, Iโ€™m stepping in for you. Melanie will understand. Stay here and take care of your mate.โ€
With that, Dirk turns and heads back to the house. โ€œHe seems pretty set on this,โ€ Amara comments.
โ€œBut itโ€™s okay if you want to go,โ€ she adds, turning to me. โ€œI canโ€™t guarantee that Charity will be ready to talk yet. Maybe she needs some time to process everything.โ€
โ€œAs I said, we should wait until Melanie and Charity return,โ€ my mom interjects, grabbing my arm. โ€œLetโ€™s go inside.โ€
She tugs at my arm, leading me into the house. Max, Ginger, and Lunaโ€”Amara follow behind.
Max and Ginger are whispering to each other, but Iโ€™m so lost in my thoughts that I canโ€™t make out what theyโ€™re saying. I could try to focus and then I would hear them, but right now, Iโ€™m trying to make a decision.
I decide to try and mind-link with Melanie. Maybe sheโ€™s with Charity now and can fill me in on whatโ€™s happening.
โ€Melanie, did you find her? How is she? We really need you both to come back. Itโ€™s urgent.โ€
She doesnโ€™t respond, but I know her mind-link is open. I donโ€™t feel like sheโ€™s shutting anyone out. Ten minutes pass before she finally mind-links me back.
By then, Iโ€™m in my room, staring at an open suitcase on my bed, trying to decide whether to pack or not.
โ€Jaydon, weโ€™re on our way back. Max also messaged me about an emergency but wouldnโ€™t tell me what it was. Can you fill me in?โ€
โ€Itโ€™s about Selene. Please, come back as soon as you can.โ€
I wait, hoping sheโ€™ll say something about Charity. But she doesnโ€™t. So I ask again.
โ€Will Charity talk to me? Can you give me some sort of clue, please?โ€
I can almost hear Melanie sigh in my mind before she replies.
โ€Sheโ€™ll talk to you, but be gentle with her. Sheโ€™s scared and doesnโ€™t think she deserves a mate. Youโ€™ll have to convince her otherwise. Unless you donโ€™t want her, but she wonโ€™t be upset if you reject her. Thatโ€™s what she said.โ€
I canโ€™t help but scoff. Reject her? I would never do that. What happened to her was terrible. Any wolf who could blame her for it and reject her because of it doesnโ€™t deserve a mate chosen by the Goddess.
I canโ€™t help but think that the Goddess chose me for her because of the kind of man I am, which is the kind who will love her unconditionally. Sheโ€™s not broken; sheโ€™s strong. She walked away and still walks through this life; many she-wolves have ended their lives in times like what she went through. I will show her that she is worthy.
โ€œI would never reject her, Melanie, you know that.โ€
โ€œYes. I know. Youโ€™re a good man, little brother. See you soon; weโ€™re taking the scenic route, walking slow to give her time to catch her breath and wrap her head around this.โ€
That settles it. I put my still-empty suitcase back in my closet and then head to the alphaโ€™s office, where Iโ€™m sure to find my father and brother making plans.
