A Life Lost
Prologue
Crash.
That was the sound that gave me away. The glass roof couldn’t bear my weight and inevitably shattered.
I fell through, landing hard on the unforgiving cement below. The impact knocked the wind out of me, leaving me gasping for breath.
I clutched my sides, trying to speed up the recovery process, and dragged myself through the scattered shards of glass.
In the distance, I could hear the soft patter of footsteps growing closer with each passing second.
A small amount of blood dribbled onto my chin as I coughed, my lungs constricting.
I wheezed in pain, struggling to regain my composure.
I silently thanked whatever higher power was out there for the full moon tonight. Its light spilled through the broken roof, softening the darkness and helping me make out my surroundings.
Then, a door on the far side of the room creaked open. A figure stepped through, but I couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman.
The figure moved cautiously towards me, and that’s when it hit me.
My world felt like it was collapsing.
The truth was standing right in front of me.
“You?” I managed to croak out the word.
That’s when I realized the harsh truth…
Never trust anyone.
