The Calm Before the Ball
Book 3: New Era to the Alpha
SCARLETT
Twenty-one years had passed since Anthony was born, a day that forever altered our existence. He had already experienced his first Moon Ball without discovering his mate, and the second one was rapidly approaching. Time seemed to fly, but the memory of the day Caroline saved his life was still as clear as if it had happened yesterday.
My gratitude toward her, my precious daughter, was boundless. Anthony had matured into a robust, intelligent young man. He was always questioning, pushing limits with the same stubborn determination he’d inherited from me.
When he was determined to do something, no one could sway him—except for Caroline. She was his counterbalance, his rock, and they were inseparable. Caroline, now twenty-six, had grown into a woman I couldn’t be more proud of.
She had followed my path, choosing to become a doctor, and seeing her in scrubs filled me with a joy I couldn’t express in words. My princess. The gift the Goddess bestowed upon me.
Christopher and I had our hands full, raising them and leading the pack. Our lives revolved around them—our only children. The next generation was thriving around us: Karen and Thomas’s son, Kevin, was Anthony’s best friend and constant companion.
Their youngest, Emily, had just turned twelve. Meanwhile, Bob and Tiffany’s triplets—Andrew, Adrian, and Aria—were now fifteen and bursting with youthful vigor. Gradually, the pack’s leadership was undergoing a transformation.
My father had retired five years ago, handing over the reins to Bob. My mother was still in charge of the hospital, but I had stepped back after Anthony was born, and Karen had left when Kevin was born. Now, Caroline had stepped into her role at the hospital, the next link in our chain.
We were grooming Anthony to take over as alpha, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling that he wasn’t ready—not yet. Only two days were left until the Moon Ball. I kept myself busy with last-minute preparations, but no matter how much I planned, there were always details that couldn’t be finalized until the last moment.
As I switched off the alarm clock, I felt Christopher’s arm draw me back into bed, his warmth dispelling my worries. For now, I decided to let this moment be enough. I had set my alarm clock to ring earlier, and after turning it off, I felt a strong hand pulling me back into bed, guiding my body until I fit snugly into his embrace.
The collision of our bodies always set off fireworks within me. His face nestled between my shoulder and neck, his lips kissing the delicate skin below my ear, sending shivers down my spine. Then he whispered in my ear.
“Good morning.”
Christopher’s raspy voice made me shiver.
“Good morning,” I responded, my voice still heavy with sleep.
“You’re not thinking about getting up now, are you?” he asked, his hands exploring my body, his fingers tracing my mark, my nipple, then moving to my sex. Even through the fabric of my nightgown, his touch ignited me, sending my entire body into a trance, teasing, making it impossible to leave.
“Not anymore…,” I replied, turning to face him and capturing his lips with mine. I ran my hand over his already hard cock, even through his sweatpants, making him moan into my mouth. It was amazing how, even after all these years together, we still knew how to arouse each other, and with all this practice, the sex only got better.
Our hands were quickly undressing each other. He pulled my nightgown over my head, and simultaneously, his lips found my nipple, making me cry out with pleasure as I felt all the blood rushing to my core.
His hands didn’t stop and slowly moved down until they hitched my panties and took them off slowly while his kiss trailed down my belly to my sex. When his tongue touched my clitoris, I gasped, crying out his name.
“Christopher…”
The word came out choked while my rational mind gave way to the pleasure he was giving me, making me practically lose consciousness. He alternated between gentle and firm movements with expertise and knew exactly all my most sensitive points.
His hand reached out until it caressed my nipple, making me reach the peak. I couldn’t contain myself; the orgasm came, making me squirm and moan loudly.
Christopher’s satisfied smile, after making me feel this way, was my favorite of his. My hands removed his underwear, and I quickly enveloped his hard cock with my lips, making him grunt.
Damn, how I loved that.
I made the movements up and down and I felt him losing consciousness. Due to our connection, I felt his layers of pleasure overlapping with mine.
Then Christopher used his fingers to lightly rub my mark, making all the tension that dissipated just a few seconds ago build even stronger, to the point that I couldn’t control my moans, still with his cock in my mouth.
Christopher couldn’t take it anymore. He pulled me up, laid me down on the bed, and covered my body with his, holding my hands above my head and thrusting his length inside me. Sliding down my excitement mixed with his saliva, I felt my walls receive him, making us fit perfectly.
It was fucking perfection. I couldn’t get enough of it. His thrusts increased in pace, his gaze locked on mine, moans of pleasure filling the room until he bit my mark, leaving his showing, making me bite his too. And we reached our peak of pleasure together, leaving only one thought in my mind.
I love this man.
After we took a shower and went downstairs, I was finishing organizing breakfast, and Christopher was sitting at the end of the table, already moving forward and reading some documents. Suddenly, the room door opened, and Caroline came in wearing scrubs. I couldn’t get enough of seeing her in the hospital uniform.
“Good morning, my love,” I said, finishing arranging the jellies on the table while she dropped her bag and came over to hug me.
“How was the shift today?” I asked, and at the same moment, Christopher got up to hug her too.
“It was great, Mom. I attended a birth with Grandma, a guard with silver burns, and four viruses,” she told me excitedly as she sat at the table and took two slices of bread.
I smiled. I loved hearing her hospital stories, and I saw a lot of myself in her too.
Before anyone could say another word, a figure appeared at the top of the stairs. A brunette girl, clutching her shoes, tiptoed down quietly. Her face turned a deep shade of red as her wide eyes met ours.
“Good morning, Alphas,” she said.
She mumbled, her voice barely audible. She hurried down the remaining steps, her heels clacking against the wooden floor, and dashed out the door before anyone could respond.
Moments later, Anthony appeared, stretching leisurely as if he had all the time in the world. His blond hair was tousled, and he wore that easygoing smirk that could charm anyone—except me.
“Morning, folks,” he greeted, snagging an apple from the bowl and sinking his teeth into it with an air of easy assurance.
I crossed my arms, squinting at him. “Anthony, she’s the third one this week. The Ball is just two days away. You need to slow down.”
I kept my voice hushed, my tone sharp enough to slice through the air, making sure the girl didn’t overhear as she made her exit.
Anthony simply shrugged, his smile unwavering. “It’s no big deal, Mom. I’m just having fun.”
“At least drive her home,” I suggested, my patience dwindling.
“She said not to sweat it. She’ll grab a cab,” he retorted, leaning against the kitchen counter with an exasperating air of indifference.
“Anthony.” Christopher’s voice sliced through the room, steady and commanding. The authority in his tone was undeniable.
Anthony halted mid-chew, sighed, and snatched the car keys from their hook by the door.
“All right, I’m off,” he announced, sauntering out with the same cool composure. The sound of the door closing reverberated behind him.
I sank into my chair at the table, shaking my head. “I don’t even know who he is anymore,” I confessed, my frustration seeping into my words.
Christopher laid a comforting hand on my shoulder as he took a seat across from me, his face a picture of warmth and understanding. “Take it easy, sweetheart,” he advised, pouring himself a cup of joe. “He’s just living it up. He hasn’t found his mate yet, but he’ll settle down once he does.”
I frowned, my skepticism gnawing at me. “I sure hope so,” I whispered, my gaze fixed on the door as if I could will it to reveal a version of Anthony that didn’t worry me so much.
