EPILOGUE
Robyn opened her apartment door to find Slade standing there with a wide grin on his face. “Merry Christmas,” she greeted him warmly. “Come on in.”
“Merry Christmas to you, too.”
She opened the door wider to let him inside. Tomorrow her mother was making a Christmas luncheon, but tonight was just for the two of them.
Slade had helped her clean up the apartment, going as far as to buy a new and bigger Christmas tree to replace her small broken one. They couldn’t have real trees in the apartment for fire reasons, but the one he’d chosen for her was beautiful.
The past week had been full of change. Somehow, despite being so close to the holiday, she’d landed a new job with an actual accounting firm. She didn’t start until after the first of the year, but she was thrilled with the salary they’d offered her.
Slade was also transitioning into a new role within the Denver US Marshals’ office in the new year, too.
As Slade had predicted, her stepfather and stepbrother had both provided additional information on those involved in the gun dealing to receive lighter sentences. She was horrified to realize there had been two additional dirty cops in the Thornton police force, Tony French being one of them, along with another guy she hadn’t known.
The only good news was that her stepfather didn’t contest the divorce, and her mother had already put her current house on the market, hoping to purchase something much smaller.
And even more interesting was the fact that James Crane had visited twice already and was planning to attend their Christmas luncheon.
“I’ve made spaghetti. It’ll be ready in about twenty minutes.” Robyn couldn’t deny feeling nervous. She wasn’t exactly the best cook on the planet. Good thing she hadn’t fallen for Colt; the poor man would starve.
“Smells delicious.” Slade held out his hand. “Come sit by the tree with me.”
She took his hand and followed him to the sofa. To her utter and complete surprise, he went down on one knee and held out a small velvet box.
“What is this?” Her voice was breathless.
“Robyn, I love you and want to marry you. I know it’s very soon, but I feel as if I’ve known you for months instead of weeks. And if you don’t like this ring, we’ll get something different. Will you please marry me?” He opened the box, revealing a sparkling diamond engagement ring.
“Oh, Slade.” Her eyes filled with tears, and she nodded. She held out her left hand so he could slide the ring on, unsurprised it fit perfectly. “Yes, of course I’ll marry you.”
“I love you,” he repeated, then stood and pulled her into his arms.
His kiss made her head swim, but then suddenly she pulled back, gaping at him. “Wait a minute. I don’t have nearly as expensive of a gift for you.”
He threw his head back and laughed. “Oh, Robyn. You agreeing to be my wife is the only gift I need.”
Flushing, she broke out of his embrace and picked up a small wrapped box from beneath the tree. “For you.”
Slade eyed her curiously as he carefully unwrapped the gift. When he opened the box, he smiled. “It’s a picture ornament of us.”
“Yes. Our first Christmas together.” She watched with amazement as he hung it on the closest tree branch.
“It’s perfect, Robyn. Just like you.” He pulled her close for another kiss.
Robyn kissed Slade back, thinking she’d never been so happy.
Or so blessed.
