EPILOGUE
Madison walked to the Celtic Cross and placed a fall wreath beside a bush. A hummingbird hovered for a split second before fluttering away and reminding Madison of how quickly life can change. Her fear of death and the unknown had kept her in a vise grip for too long, but the night she almost died a year ago gave her back hope. Hope in God. Hope in her forever love. Hope for when the unknown crept back into her life. She could handle it now with Christ.
She fingered the cross pendant around her neck and remembered her sister’s saying—to infinity and beyond. Their sisterly love would never die, and one day they’d be reunited.
Madison stood and let the breeze flow through her long hair. The water stilled from yesterday’s storm, mirroring their surroundings. She glanced over at the bench where Tucker waited. Ever since that night at Emerson’s ranch, they’d grown closer. He had gotten tested and found out he didn’t have the Huntington’s gene, but even if he did, she knew she would have stuck by his side. His mother had fully recovered. The antidote was reproduced and given to other victims. All Morvecet was destroyed. The courts found Emerson guilty on all charges, including the murder of Daniel Levine. He was now in prison.
Daniel had emailed Jenkins earlier that day, confessing to everything. He knew Emerson was on his tail and would kill him. The situation saddened Madison. She never knew if Leah had known about her father, but in a way she hoped she hadn’t. For her sake.
Sam, Madison’s biological father, had barely let her out of his sight. They’d become close, and he even started dating Brenda. Madison smiled at the thought of her sweet housekeeper finding genuine love after so many years. The woman cooked a full Thanksgiving feast which waited for them at Madison’s home.
She stood and made her way back over to Tucker. “Thank you for coming with me.” She sat and leaned her head on his, wrapping her arms around him. “I love it here.”
“Anything for you.” He squirmed out of her embrace and squatted in front of her, holding a box.
He opened it.
A diamond sparkled in the sunlight.
She gasped.
He removed the solitaire and held it out. “I love you, Madi. Will you make me the happiest man on earth and be my wife?”
A tear formed and she jumped up. “Yes! Yes!”
Tucker put the ring on her finger and stood. He pulled her into his arms and twirled her around.
A thought emerged.
The high school sweethearts were now back together—always and forever.
