EPILOGUE
Tanner tugged at the tuxedo that was strangling him. “Why is Slade punishing us by making us wear these monkey suits, anyway?”
“Uh, because it’s his wedding day?” Colt shook his head. “Stop complaining, I’ve noticed Sidney can’t keep her eyes off you. You might want to invest in buying one, as it seems she likes the way you look in a tux.”
Tanner grinned and stopped tugging at the collar. “She’s beautiful, isn’t she? I’m the one who can’t stop looking at her.”
“Okay, enough.” Colt rolled his eyes. “Between you and Slade I’ve had just about all the romance I can take.”
Tanner clapped him on the back. “Your turn is coming.”
Colt shook his head, all signs of mirth gone. “Not happening. Let’s go join the reception.”
They walked into the hall, and Tanner’s gaze instantly found Sidney. She wore a stunning red dress that he personally thought may have overshadowed the bride. Robyn had been gorgeous, but Sidney stole his breath.
He crossed over and caught her hand in his. “May I have this dance?”
She blushed and nodded. “The wedding was wonderful, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah.” He knew Slade and Robyn had been through a lot, but today their love shone true. “Thanks for attending this shindig with me.”
“Thanks for inviting me.”
He pulled her closer and spun in a circle, making her laugh. Sidney’s adoption of Lilly had been finalized and she had found a new nanny, Martha, who was currently watching Lilly. “Have you decided on a number yet?”
“Tanner.” Sidney let out an exaggerated sigh. This was an ongoing discussion between them. “We can’t discuss more children at this point in our relationship.”
“That’s what I thought you’d say.” He abruptly stopped dancing, went down on one knee right there in the middle of Slade’s reception and pulled out a ring. “Sidney, will you do me the honor of marrying me?”
Sidney’s eyes widened in shock, but then her features filled with joy. All the other couples on the dance floor stopped to watch, including Slade and Robyn, and his boss, James Crane, and Lucille Lowry.
“I love you, and I love Lilly and I will love all the other children who need us. Please be my wife?”
“Yes, Tanner.” She let out a laugh, her cheeks turning pink at being the center of attention. “Yes, I’ll marry you. Now stand up, this is Slade and Robyn’s wedding day.”
“We don’t mind,” Robyn assured her, smiling broadly. “In fact, welcome to the family, Sidney.”
“I mind,” Crane groused. “I’m losing good marshals faster than I can replace them.”
“Not losing,” Slade corrected. “Reassigning.”
Ignoring them, Tanner rose and took the ring from the box, sliding it onto the fourth finger of Sidney’s left hand. It was a little big, but not by much. He kissed her fingers, then drew her into his arms. “Thanks for making me the happiest man on the planet.”
“Oh, Tanner.” She reached up to kiss him. “I’m so glad God brought us together.”
“Me, too.” He smiled down at her. “Okay, now that we are official engaged, have you decided on a number?”
She burst out laughing. “Obsessed with children, are you? Okay, here’s my number.” She went up on her tiptoes and whispered, “Five.”
“Five?” His voice came out in a high embarrassing squeak. “Really?”
She laughed again. “No, silly, but you should have seen the look on your face. Priceless.”
He was still grappling with the idea of five kids. “So then, how many?”
“How about we just take them one at a time?” She kissed him again. “And leave the number up to God.”
“I can live with that.” He spun her around again, his heart full of love and hope for their future.
And for the blessings God has bestowed upon them.
