Before anyone could say another word, a figure appeared at the top of the stairs. A brunette girl, clutching her shoes, tiptoed down quietly. Her face turned a deep shade of red as her wide eyes met ours.
“Good morning, Alphas,” she said.
She mumbled, her voice barely audible. She hurried down the remaining steps, her heels clacking against the wooden floor, and dashed out the door before anyone could respond.
Moments later, Anthony appeared, stretching leisurely as if he had all the time in the world. His blond hair was tousled, and he wore that easygoing smirk that could charm anyone—except me.
“Morning, folks,” he greeted, snagging an apple from the bowl and sinking his teeth into it with an air of easy assurance.
I crossed my arms, squinting at him. “Anthony, she’s the third one this week. The Ball is just two days away. You need to slow down.”
I kept my voice hushed, my tone sharp enough to slice through the air, making sure the girl didn’t overhear as she made her exit.
Anthony simply shrugged, his smile unwavering. “It’s no big deal, Mom. I’m just having fun.”
“At least drive her home,” I suggested, my patience dwindling.
“She said not to sweat it. She’ll grab a cab,” he retorted, leaning against the kitchen counter with an exasperating air of indifference.
“Anthony.” Christopher’s voice sliced through the room, steady and commanding. The authority in his tone was undeniable.
Anthony halted mid-chew, sighed, and snatched the car keys from their hook by the door.
“All right, I’m off,” he announced, sauntering out with the same cool composure. The sound of the door closing reverberated behind him.
I sank into my chair at the table, shaking my head. “I don’t even know who he is anymore,” I confessed, my frustration seeping into my words.
Christopher laid a comforting hand on my shoulder as he took a seat across from me, his face a picture of warmth and understanding. “Take it easy, sweetheart,” he advised, pouring himself a cup of joe. “He’s just living it up. He hasn’t found his mate yet, but he’ll settle down once he does.”
I frowned, my skepticism gnawing at me. “I sure hope so,” I whispered, my gaze fixed on the door as if I could will it to reveal a version of Anthony that didn’t worry me so much.
