He frowned. “What are you doing, babu?” he asked, his voice dripping with sweetness.
“What did I do, Mani?” she replied, feigning innocence.
“Really, babu! Alright then.” He revved the bike and she tumbled against his back. He smirked.
She swatted his back. “Manik,” she scolded softly.

They arrived at an apartment complex, and Manik scanned the area. Seeing no one, he grabbed Nandini’s bag and led her to the first door on the first floor. He hurriedly unlocked it, ushered her inside, and locked it behind them.
He dropped the bag and placed his hands on his hips, taking a deep breath. Nandini, too exhausted to argue, raised an eyebrow.

“Why? Let me die, right? You let me marry someone else, so why do you care now?”
“Nandini?” He felt his heart sink. “I…I begged your father, Nandini, but he wouldn’t listen.”
“Really?” she spat. “Are you now fulfilling your dream of running your business?”
“Nandini, we can argue later, but let me clean your wound and have my mom call a doctor. Please.” He was crying now, trying to stop the bleeding and blowing on the wound to soothe her.
“No. I won’t let you treat me.” She stood and tried to walk away.
“Like hell you won’t, Nandini! I’ll kill you if you walk away like this. Let me clean your wound.”
“No.”
“Please, I’m begging you. Please.”
“Then promise me you’ll stop this madness and focus on your business. Be the best businessman you can be—for me. You left me. Don’t abandon your business too, Manik,” she pleaded.
Manik felt his heart shatter. “I…I can’t…I can’t live without these things. They’re a habit. I’m addicted.”
“Alright, it’s settled then. You can have your vices, and I’ll find my own ways to hurt myself. I’m a housewife, Manik. I have plenty of tools at my disposal. Let’s see who lasts longer.”
Manik grabbed her by the shoulders, spinning her around to face him. She nearly stumbled, but Nyeonika was there to steady her.
“Don’t you dare even think about doing that, Nandini!” he yelled, his voice filled with fury.

Manik was about to snatch the knife from her when she sliced her hand with such force that it left a deep cut.
Manik roared in anger. “Nandini! What kind of madness is this? What am I supposed to do now, Nandini?”
“Tell me you’ll stop all this. If not, I’ll cut myself again,” she threatened.
Manik looked at her, his eyes filled with fear and pain. This wasn’t the Nandini he knew. He forcefully took the knife from her hand. “Alright. I promise I’ll never touch these things again.”
Nandini took his hand. “Promise?” she asked, a small smile on her face.
“Promise.” He pulled her into a tight hug, tears streaming down his face.
The doctor came and treated her wound. Afterward, Manik sat beside her and asked, “How are you, Nandini? Is he treating you well?”
“Yes. I’m pregnant,” she said.
He closed his eyes, pain washing over him. “It should have been ours. Only ours.” Tears rolled down his cheeks.
“Manik, you need to move on. What’s done is done, and dwelling on it won’t change anything. Be happy for me, Manik.”
“Are you happy?”
“Yes.” She smiled.
Manik smiled back. “Okay. I will.”
After this incident, Manik focused on his business, Nandini gave birth to two children, and Manik married Veebha and had two children of his own.
One day, Manik had some work in Mumbai, so he decided to surprise Nandini since it had been a while since he’d seen her.
He didn’t tell her he was coming, just showed up at her place. When he asked the watchman about Nandini’s apartment, the man gave him a sad look. “She lives on the fourth floor. First apartment.”
Before he walked away, the watchman added, “Don’t ring the bell, just knock. If you wake him, he’ll start ranting again.”
Manik felt a sense of unease—he was confused and a little scared.
He quickly ran up to her apartment, and as he was about to knock, he heard a loud voice through the door.
“I’m not dead yet! It’s you and your father who should die! It’s because of you two that I became a drunkard. Why did I get stuck with you?”
“Should I serve the food?” Nandini’s soft voice asked.
There was a thud, followed by the sound of children crying.

The doorbell rang, and they pulled away from each other just as her children walked in.
