THE DAY I CAME INTO THE WORLD, I was cursed.
This curse grew with me, from a young boy to a grown man. There was no physical sign of it. No medical professional could diagnose it.
But I knew it was there.
A dark shadow had latched onto me, marking me as cursed.
There was no denying it.
Because of this, I didn’t see surprises as a good thing. In my life, surprises meant hurt and hardship. I preferred order. Rules. Predictable patterns and familiar routines.
What’s your plan for her?
My fists clenched as I paced outside the cell where I’d put her.
I’m not sure.
That was a lie.
I knew what I had to do.
I should end her life because she’d discovered me. She’d accidentally found my carefully concealed world. She’d dared to invade my home. To trespass on my territory.
Then…do it.
I stopped in my tracks.
I glared at the sturdy wooden door, my eyes falling to the rusty padlock that’d been locking people in for far too long.
Eleven years.
Eleven years since I’d seen another human being. Eleven years since I’d felt that raw anger surge in my veins, calling for violence, demanding their suffering before they could inflict mine.
Just do it.
I took the key out of my pocket.
I unlocked the door.
I stepped in to confront my enemy.
