“My brother’s looking for some extra help. Someone who can cook and clean, help out around the house. And he’s rich, so he’ll pay well. I know you need money.”
Something in the tone of Miranda’s voice told me she was leaving something out, but I was at the end of my rope and she knew that.
We’ve discussed my predicament numerous times. She was aware of the debt I was in and my desperate need to swim free.
After placing a hot pan in the steamer, I pulled off my oven mitts and looked into her eyes across the glass casing that separated the food from me and the customers.
I’ve gotten to know Miranda somewhat, through our chats when she came in for lunch. We were friends, but no matter what, we would never be real friends.

Miranda reached down into her purse and pulled out a business card, handing it to me over top of the glass. “If you’re interested, here’s his card.”
She didn’t wait for a response, instead pushing her tray down toward the register to pay for her salad. Miranda didn’t need a response; she already knew my answer before I did.
