Chapter 2

Mom and Felicity were coming by today. Mom had set up a Zoom meeting with all of us girls to talk about a Christmas ball. She didn’t care that it was last minute. We only had two and a half weeks until Christmas and this ball was going to be the day before Christmas Eve. What I initially thought was just the family gathering for Christmas has turned into a massive ball that includes inviting other packs. Felicity says something’s on Mom’s mind, and I intend to find out what it is today.

The guards have let me know that they are coming up the driveway. I try to sneak out to see Mom before the kids get a sniff of her here, but they catch me going down the stairs.

“Grandma is here!”

They rush to the door and beat me outside. Mom is all smiles when she sees her grandkids. They bear hug her, nearly knocking her on her butt.

“Woah. Levi and Luca, you’re almost taller than me,” she compliments them.

She’s right those boys are growing up so fast. They started their training early since they’re not just Alphas. People speculate they will be the most powerful Alpha Kings anyone has ever seen. I don’t listen to speculation and I make sure the kids don’t either.

“Oh my look at my beautiful little girls. “Leah and Layla, you both have grown so much too. And Lance look at you getting just as tall as your sister Leah,” she coos at them.

They eat up everything she tells them. They talk to Mom every day but when she is around, they act as if they haven’t seen her in years. Felicity and I are enjoying the garden while Mom spends time with the kids.

“She still babies your kids too,” I ask Felicity.

“Yup. You know they are her babies. She lives to be a grandma,” Felicity jokes.

“I know. It’s almost like it was her life calling,” I laugh. Turning my attention to Felicity I ask, “What’s going on with her?”

“I don’t know. She’s been different these past few days. This ball idea was all hers but it’s like she’s hiding something from us. You should’ve seen her and Dad earlier. They were conversing through the mind link but whatever was being said made him go from pouty to protective. I could only pick up on a few of his emotions, even though I tried not to,” Felicity sighed.

‘Jaxon,’ I reached out to mind link him.

‘What’s wrong,’ he immediately asks.

‘Nothing. I wanted to ask what was wrong with Mom. She’s been really cagey. Have you noticed anything?’

‘I don’t know what’s going on. She has been fake smiling a lot lately. It’s like something is bothering her but she doesn’t want to say anything. Dad is just as tight-lipped about it too. I asked him if something was wrong, and he said no but in a grumpy tone.’

Mom tapped my thigh breaking my conversation with Jaxon. I pulled her into a hug. My body relaxed and I forgot all about asking her what was wrong. There’s something about her embrace that makes me feel like a kid again. We spent hours talking about the ball and where it should be. We agreed that the kingdom was the best place to have it since we had enough room to handle many people and enough guards for security.

It was as if Mom was throwing a last hoorah party or something. When she was done talking about the party she went back to play with her grandkids. Felicity and I shared looks. Something was definitely wrong, and we needed to figure out what it was.

‘Skye, you didn’t feel the need to heal Mom or anything to that nature.’

‘No Dani. She’s not sick. Trust me, I searched her body during the hug to make sure. Something else is going on with mom,’ Skye said.

Skye was just as lost as I was. It would have been easier if Mom was sick. That way we could have healed her. Knowing she’s not sick made us feel better though.

Later that night, Mom and I walked around the garden. She slightly touched all the blooming flowers. The moon was full and shined down on Mom as she embraced the quietness.

“You’re worried about me,” she finally said.

“Yes, I am,” I didn’t deny it.

“There’s no reason to worry about me. I’m fine.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. I knew she wasn’t fine. Jaxon and Felicity knew she wasn’t fine. Dad wouldn’t say anything, so there was no need to ask him. It was as if Mom was hiding something from us. Something big.

“We need to go see your sister tomorrow,” Mom said.

“Okay. She’ll be happy to see us.”

“Yeah,” Mom said absentmindedly.

Leah ran outside and tugged at Mom’s sleeve. She smiled down at Leah. Then Leah said something that had me more confused.

“Everything will work out just fine Grandma.”

Leah hugged her and Mom kissed her head while returning the hug. “Thank you, Leah.”

“Goodnight Mom and Grandma,” Leah said before rushing back into the house.

I waited until Mom turned back toward me before I questioned her. The look of relief on her face when she heard Leah meant that something was wrong, and Leah gave her the comfort that everything would be okay.

“What’s going on Mom? You’ve been cagey and impulsive. Christmas has always been a family event and now you’re inviting numerous packs for a ball. This is the most relaxed you have been all day. And you finally have a genuine smile on your face since being away from the grandchildren.”

I couldn’t hold back anymore. I watched and observed Mom laugh and play with the kids. But she also had a distant look in her eye. She was paying attention to them, but you could tell something was in the back of her mind.

“Nothing sweetie. We need to leave early tomorrow morning. Goodnight.” She kissed my cheek and left me standing alone in the garden.
