Chapter 1: I Couldn’t Stay Away

[POV: SEBASTIAN]

The moment the car pulled away, my heart felt like it was being torn in two. I dropped to my knees, struggling to deal with the pain.

Tao took control, his strength overwhelming my mind. His paws pounded the forest floor as we raced alongside the car, staying out of sight. But not from Alice.

Her face, streaked with tears, stared back at me, pleading for me not to leave. Inside Tao’s mind, I was the one howling.

We watched as they stopped and dropped off the keys. Alice’s gaze cut deep into my shattered soul before they drove off again.

Tao started to run through the woods once more, but the cover wasn’t as thick now. He could be easily seen.

He hadn’t grabbed my clothes, so walking back naked wasn’t an option.

He managed to avoid being seen as we passed different cabins. My clothes were still in a shredded pile when we got back. I found a pair of shorts and gathered up what was left of my clothes.

“Damn it, Tao, you could have let me change first.”

“You would have wasted time, and I wouldn’t have been able to say goodbye.” His thoughts clashed with mine.

Her image invaded every corner of my mind, making it hard to think straight. It had been two days since she left and Hawk had been away meeting with Black and Alpha Alex.

“Sebastian!” Hawk’s voice echoed in his office where I sat.

“Huh?” I scratched my head, trying to remember what he had said.

“Alpha Kyle Black spotted Draven’s men near their territory last night. He’s keeping a close eye on them.”

His gaze was intense. It wasn’t often that Hawk made me feel uneasy, but this was serious.

“I’m sending four of our men up there; Alpha Alex is sending two of his best. The council has called a meeting in three days, and you’re not focused.

“I’m sorry, being away from Alice is harder than I thought it would be.”

I knew it was going to be tough, but the constant ache in my heart was unbearable, and the rest of me was filled with sadness.

Hawk let out a heavy sigh.

“I need you focused and by my side at this council meeting. Everyone else has their duties and I’ve given Josh the responsibility of running the cabins.” Hawk’s glare was intense.

I didn’t mean to snort so loudly.

“You’ve been doing such a poor job, he’s been double-checking your work.” His sharp eyebrow raise made me sink into my seat.

“I can’t explain what’s happening in my head. I’m losing my mind. I can’t stop thinking about her ancestors. Have her parents been hiding things from her?”

I hadn’t been able to share my worries with Hawk since that night at his place.

He hummed to himself and tapped his fingers on his desk. “Pack a bag, go see Alice, then come back in two days so we can plan our moves for the council meeting.” He leaned back in his chair, fingers linked behind his head.

“I need you by my side. Maybe this will help. You’re going to have to get used to being without her for short periods of time, but I know there are some things you need to find out about her ancestors.”

It was like he was reading my mind.

“Two days.” My heart started to beat again.

Tao lifted his head. “Hopefully you’ll find the answers you’re looking for. Come back clear-headed.”

He was a great leader and alpha. “Oh, and Sebastian…let me know.”

“I will, Alpha, thank you.” I nodded in appreciation. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

The engine hummed as I pressed harder on the accelerator. Alice said it took them just over four hours. I’d make it in three.

Tao sat with his tongue hanging out, eager to shower her with wet kisses. I, on the other hand, needed to.

Her scent still lingered on my bed sheets, the only thing keeping me sane at night as my dreams were filled with her.

My heart pounded as I reached her town, Thornbrook.

I didn’t have her address and I hadn’t told her I was coming, but I didn’t need to. A hint of her sweet scent filled the air. I couldn’t wait to see her face when I showed up.

Her scent got stronger the further I drove into town. It was clean, no sign of other werewolves, which was strange. Most places had small communities that mingled with humans, but not here.

There was also a strange sensation as I entered her town, but my thoughts were on Alice.

My focus snapped back when I stopped outside a house. “Alice.”

I gripped the steering wheel, trying to calm my breathing. With Tao on the verge of breaking free, I had to tell him to calm down.

My body temperature spiked and my fingers tingled.

To hold her in my arms again would be pure bliss. I swallowed the lump in my throat. Why was I suddenly nervous? The bond I had with Alice intensified in seconds and I wondered if she was feeling the same.

I stepped out of the car, my legs shaky and my breathing ragged. The thought of meeting her parents had me in a mess.

“She’s our mate, pull yourself together, or I’ll come out and do it for you!” Tao’s voice echoed in my mind, making me laugh.

“Okay, I’m going,” I muttered under my breath.

A breeze circled around me, cooling my body.

Alice was in this house and I hoped she was ready for me. I couldn’t stay away; the need for clarity about who she was was eating away at me, and I was sure that was why I couldn’t focus.

Hawk needed me back to my full self, so now it was time to face a fear that had been lingering in the back of my mind.

The door swung open before my knuckles could even graze the wood, and there stood Alice. “Sebastian?” Her voice was a whisper, laced with disbelief. She stared at me for a moment longer before launching herself into my arms. “You’re really here.”

I wrapped my arms around her, one under her ass and the other around her back, as her legs coiled around my waist.

“I missed you.” My heart rate began to slow, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I nuzzled into her neck. “I’ve been a wreck since you left.” Her arms tightened around my neck, her face buried in my skin as I confessed my turmoil.

“We need to figure out who your ancestors are. I only have two days before I have to go back.”

“Two days,” she echoed, a smile spreading across her face as her fingers toyed with my hair.

Tears welled up in her eyes, and she tried to blink them away. “I missed you so much. I’ve been miserable since I got back.” Her lips found mine in an instant, and our kiss was nothing short of explosive.

“Do you want to come inside? The house is empty right now. And I think our neighbors are getting an eyeful.” She bit her bottom lip, her gaze shifting over my shoulder.

I let her slide down from my grasp, and she intertwined her fingers with mine, leading me into her home.

“How did you know where I lived?” Her brow furrowed in confusion.

We were alone. Together. A smirk tugged at my lips. I reached out, my hand gliding over her cheek and into her hair, pulling her closer to me.

Her scent was intoxicating; something had shifted…or was about to. I inhaled her deeply; she was my drug, my lifeline. “I need you,” I whispered into her ear.

Her breathing quickened to match mine, her pupils dilating until they consumed her blue irises. “Sebastian.” She clung to my shirt, pleading with the way she said my name.

“Where’s your room, and how much time do we have?” I was already unbuttoning my jeans, desperate to free my throbbing cock from its confines.

I could smell her arousal, and I knew her pussy was slick and ready for me. “Or do I need to take you right here and risk getting caught?”

I shoved my hand down the front of her leggings and panties, and wasn’t disappointed when I felt her wetness coat my fingers.

Her cries grew louder as I fingered her. “Take me… Upstairs, second door on the left.”

Her mouth hung open, and I knew she was close. As difficult as it was, I pulled my fingers away and sucked on them, savoring her sweet taste. She led me to her room and shut the door behind us.

In a matter of seconds, I had shed my jeans and yanked off her leggings; her panties didn’t stand a chance and ripped in my hands.

She was on her back on the bed, and as much as I wanted to plunge my cock deep into her pussy, the lingering taste on my tongue had me craving more.

I thought she might have ripped out a chunk of my hair when she came, but I didn’t care. I had missed her so much. Wiping my mouth, she eyed my cock as I moved into position.

I slid in slowly, savoring the view, and groaned as I buried myself as deep as I could go.

“Oh, Sebastian.” Tears welled up in her eyes. I gripped her hips and thrust into her so hard that her moans turned into screams.

“Yes! Oh God…I missed you so much.”

“I can’t live without you, Alice.” I slammed into her one last time and came. The release was incredible. My vision blurred and my heart pounded erratically.

“Oh fuck, are you okay?” I let go of her and leaned down to kiss her. “I hope I didn’t hurt you?”

Her arms wrapped around my neck and pulled me down on top of her. “Can you stay longer than two days?” she murmured into my ear, her heart still racing.

“The council has called a meeting. I need to be there for Hawk. My mind’s been a mess since you left, so Hawk sent me to get some clarity.”

I kissed her cheek, trailing my lips to hers.

“Is it serious?” Her fingers played with the back of my hair.

“It’s the first meeting since Councilor Ozworld took over. Hawk thinks this will divide the packs; there’s something much bigger happening.”

My heart rate finally returned to normal. That’s when I noticed the pictures. They were incredible.

“Did you make these?” I swung my legs off the bed to get a closer look. “Tao.” She had drawn him in exquisite detail.

He whimpered inside my head; he was itching to come out.

“Yes, a few I did at the cabin, but these are the ones I drew here.” Alice slid her arm around my waist.

“Alice,” a voice called out as a door slammed shut.

“Whose truck is that out front?” The man’s voice was laced with anger, and from the look on Alice’s face, it was her father, and she was worried.
